Terracotta Army: The greatest archaeological find of the 20th century - BBC News
In March 1974, Chinese farmers digging a well unearthed the greatest archaeological find of the century - the buried Terracotta Army. After coming across a life-sized human head made of clay in Xi’an, China, archaeologists were called in to investigate. What they found was extraordinary. Thousands of life-like terracotta figures from the Qin dynasty, fashioned 2,000 years ago to protect the First Emperor of China in the afterlife. Archaeologist Li Xiuzhen has worked on the site since the 1980s. Her team was the first to discover that each warrior was originally painted in bright colours.

On April 4th more than 20 Chinese petitioners went to
Xi Jinping's hometown, Fuping County in Shaanxi province.
They aimed to visit the grave of Xi's father Xi Zhongxun,
former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) veterans.
Yet, the petitioners were blocked and driven
away by local police.
Voice of America (VOA) reported that petitioners swiped
their ID cards to get into the Cemetery of Xi Zhongxun.
The ID cards were tracked; petitioners were blocked from
going further and taken away from the Cemetery.
Later, they were detained in a warehouse with installed
surveillance cameras and guarded by the police.
Now the petitioners, in custody, are waiting to be
taken away by the authorities of their residential areas.
Petitioner Jiang Fuyou told the VOA that as citizens,
they have rights to visit the grave of Xi Zhongxun.
The CCP in Fuping County really made them angry.
Human Rights Watch Appeals Release of Four
Detained Beijing Citizens
On April 4th New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW)
issued a statement.
It called on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to
immediately release four Beijing citizens.
The four were arrested for demanding CCP officials
declare their assets.
The statement said detention of four anti-corruption activists
raised public doubts on Xi Jinping's resolve in fighting corruption.
On March 31st Beijing citizens including Yuan Dong, Hou Xin,
Zhang Baocheng and Ma Xinli, displayed banners in Beijing
Xidan Cultural Square. The banner demanded assets
declaration of CCP officials and punishment of corrupt officials.
They were finally taken away by the police and
accused of illegal rally.
Currently, the four are held in a local detention center.

Paula Madison: Finding Samuel Lowe | Talks at Google
Retired media executive and entrepreneur, Paula Williams Madison, discusses her Chinese and Jamaican roots.
This powerful debut tells the story of Paula Williams Madison's Chinese grandfather, Samuel Lowe. He became romantically involved with a Jamaican woman, Paula's grandmother, and they lived together modestly with their daughter in his Kingston dry goods store, Chiney Shop. In 1920 his Chinese soon-to-be wife arrived to set up a proper family. When he requested to take his three-year-old daughter with him, Paula's jealous grandmother made sure that Lowe never saw his child again. That began an almost one-hundred-year break in their family.
Years later, the arrival of her only grandchild raising questions about family and legacy, Paula decided to search for Samuel Lowe's descendants in China. With the support of her brothers and the help of encouraging strangers, a determined Paula eventually pieced together her grandfather's life, following his story from China to Jamaica and back.
Her amazing search is vividly rendered. Paula has produced an emotional memoir that travels from Toronto to Jamaica to China. Using old documents, digital records, and referrals from the insular and interrelated Chinese-Jamaican community, she found three hundred long-lost relatives in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China. She even located documented family lineage that traces back three thousand years to 1006 BC. Her wonderfully warm elders, all born in Jamaica and raised in China, shared the history and accomplishments of the Lowes in the East and the West, as well as the hardships and persecution suffered by her capitalist grandfather during the Communist era and the Cultural Revolution.
Finding Samuel Lowe is a remarkable journey about one woman's path to self-discovery. It is a story about love and devotion that transcends time and race, and a beautiful reflection of the power of family and the interconnectedness of our world.
Public comment on funeral of Zhao
1. Wide pan Beijing street
2. Pedestrians on street
3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Chen, Beijing resident:
I think (this funeral) is just too much! It is very unfair but we are not able to change it. What we can do is to memorise our late (former) Premier Zhao (Ziyang) in our mind.
4. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Yang, Beijing resident:
I think he was a leader with an open mind from the bottom of his heart. I respect him very much.
5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Liu, Beijing resident:
I think he should be given what he deserves. Of course he made mistakes but no one can avoid making mistakes. After all he made contributions to the country.
6. Various street scenes
STORYLINE:
News of the death of former Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang was met with sadness in the Chinese capital.
The first official obituary for the ousted Communist Party leader was released nearly two weeks after his death, saying he made serious mistakes during 1989 pro-democracy protests.
The obituary was read out on state television - the first mention of Zhao's death by a Chinese broadcaster and possibly the first time many Chinese learned of the passing of the leader ousted for sympathising with the Tiananmen Square demonstrators.
One Beijing resident said he felt that the government's action over his funeral was unfair.
Another said she thought Zhao had made mistakes but added that he had still made contributions to the country.
State television had earlier been ordered not to broadcast news of Zhao's death on January 17 at age 85, though the official Xinhua News Agency carried a two-sentence report the same day.
Zhao spent his last 15 years under house arrest.
The broadcast came shortly after Zhao was cremated following a memorial service at a Beijing cemetery.
There were no eulogies, possibly due to a dispute between the family and government over how Zhao would be remembered.
Relatives reportedly had rejected including a reference to serious mistakes in the official assessment of his life traditionally read during burial.
Zhao helped to launch reforms in the 1980s as premier and then party leader under then-supreme leader Deng Xiaoping, opening China to the world and letting (m) millions lift themselves out of poverty.

Exts of UK consulate in HK, as official reported missing
(20 Aug 2019) The British foreign ministry says it is extremely concerned about an employee of its consulate in Hong Kong who has been missing since crossing into China on a business trip.
A statement from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office says it is seeking information from Hong Kong and Guangdong province about the fate of the employee, who was detained while crossing from the Chinese city of Shenzhen into Hong Kong.
Local media reports identified him as Simon Cheng Man-kit, a trade and investment officer at the Scottish Development International section of the consulate.
The reports say he attended a business event in Shenzhen on Aug. 8 but never returned to Hong Kong despite plans to do so the same day.
Chinese authorities had no immediate comment Tuesday on the statement.
