Lake Geneva - Along the Beaten Path
With its world-class resorts, incredible restaurants and year-round activities, Lake Geneva is a pinnacle of luxury and relaxation. But the 20+ mile shore path around Geneva Lake gives everybody lakefront access and connects the three communities of Lake Geneva, Williams Bay and Fontana. Host Mariah Haberman treks around the lake to discover what awaits along the beaten path.
As the only lake in Wisconsin with the entire shoreline accessible, there’s a lot to see around Geneva Lake! Local historian Jim Beloian joins Mariah for a walk along the shore path, where he explains the history of many of the famous homes on the lake including the Wrigley estate, Stone Manor, and Black Point Estate & Gardens. Mariah makes a few stops along the shore path including the Geneva Lake Museum and Baker House 1885, where she enjoys a champagne toast at sunset.
Geneva Lake is an endless source for recreation and relaxation, with opportunities for boating, swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, and even flyboarding (essentially, a water jetpack). Mariah teams up with Wisconsin Hydrosports to learn about this growing trend and even gives it a try herself! For those looking for a less extreme water activity, the Lake Geneva Cruise Line has a number of pick up and drop off locations along the shore path, where visitors can hop on board for a lake tour. The arrival of winter doesn’t mean an end to boating quite yet in the Lake Geneva area. With the lake typically not freezing until late January, The Lake Geneva Cruise Line takes visitors on a magical journey to the “North Pole” on its Santa Cruise with beautiful light displays along the shoreline and a special surprise for kids along the way! And once the lake does freeze over, ice boaters flock to Geneva Lake to race in the Ice Boating Capital of the World.
Ambitious hikers can take the shore path through all three communities around the lake, but chances are you’ll want to stop and take a break in each one. Downtown Lake Geneva is home to dozens of unique shops and restaurants, including Oakfire. With a focus on specialty pizza and a gorgeous, outdoor deck overlooking the lake, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. Williams Bay is home to Pier 290, one of just two commercial properties directly on the lakeshore. Enjoy delicious, Wisconsin comfort food, grab a drink at the outdoor bar or spend a day at Pier 290’s beach right out front. Further still along the shore path is Fontana, home to The Abbey Resort as well as Gordy’s Marine and Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn. Mariah visits each of these beloved lakeside spots and even indulges in Chuck’s famous “Sweet Tart” drink. There’s always something new to explore along the shore path!

Family history: Delavan Wisconsin & discoveries in Mr Spooner's attic 1980
Long lived farmer Enoch moved to Wisconsin. His enterprising son, William was a public figure in Delavan. A trip there in 1980 turns up some unexpected glimpses into the lives of great grandfather Frank (Francis) Isham's siblings, Charles and Lena. The family house is still at Washington and 3rd St. (SW corner). The business, (hardware or carriage making?) was at Walworth and 2nd Streets, SW corner.
Wowed at Lake Geneva!
The City of Lake Geneva is located in southeastern Wisconsin, 10 miles north of the Illinois state line, 75 miles NNW of Chicago and 45 miles SW of Milwaukee. It is a year round playground!
It's earliest recorded history dates back to 1831. Prior to the civil war, Lake Geneva was on the reverse route to the Great Lake ports.
After the war, the town became a resort for the wealthy Chicago families. These families began construction of the many mansions on the lake, and Lake Geneva became known as the Newport (RI) of the West. Visitors included Mary Todd Lincoln and General Sherman. The Chicago Fire of 1871 caused many Chicago families to move to their summer homes on the lake while the city was rebuilt. The construction and maintenance of these mansions, as well as household employment, developed a separate industry in the town adding to the milling, furniture, wagon and typewriter manufacturing enterprises. After arrival of the railroad, thousands of tons of Lake Geneva ice were shipped each year to the Chicago market, until the beginning of World War II.
Today, there are many resorts, golf courses, snow-skiing and attracts people from across the nation.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Fond du Lac (#501)
[Latest Airdate: September 20, 2018]
[Original Airdate: January 7, 2016]
John had expectations about Fond du Lac. He expected to find a city that is intertwined with Lake Winnebago. But he didn't expect wind surfing to be a year round sport, or that sturgeon spearing would be more like dinosaur hunting! Speaking of hunting, John didn't expect that talking to Wisconsin's turkey commander meant trekking through farm fields and sitting in a turkey blind. He also didn't expect to meet a dog sled musher or his 15 huskies, but once he was there, he knew he'd love the ride!
John did expect to walk about five miles while at Mercury Marine because who hasn't driven by and thought, THAT is a city! He expected Fond du Lac to offer good food (OK, that one is really more a demand than an expectation), and Schreiner's, Jim and Linda's Lakeview Supper Club and Kelley Country Creamery delivered.
He expected the memories to come flooding back when he got to Saint Lawrence Seminary. They did. He expected John Gurda to know the history and Mike McGivern to find a great prep sports team. They did. He expected the French name to mean Lake of Fondue. It doesn't.
Now you can expect to enjoy Fond du Lac --- we did!
