Genevieve’s Fair Trade Village - Project by people with disabilities
Genevieve's Fair Trade Village (GFTV) is a social enterprise focused on creating a fair trade environment that benefits artisans and craftspeople with disabilities, in the Siem Reap area. GFTV operates on a co-operative model, wherein, producers set their own prices and consign them to the Village to be sold. The producers receive 90% of the sale price, with the remaining portion being used to employ staff for the Village. GFTV only hires persons with disabilities.
The primary goals of Genevieve's Fair Trade Village are quite simple: 1. that the producing members rise out of poverty and; 2. that the Village become sustainable under the governance of the producing members and staff.
The Village is not a charity and hence does not solicit donations. However, because the Village is frequently approached with the offer of a donation, it was determined that a facility to accommodate this generosity was appropriate. This led to the establishment of the Artisans Community Fund, wherein donations would be directed to that fund for the sole purpose of helping persons with disabilities suffering extreme hardship. Funds will be allocated to worthy recipients by a majority decision of the producing members of Genevieve's Fair Trade Village, with the conditions, that there be no conflict of interest for any member of the decision making group in making an allocation of funds and the fund management be completely transparent and regularly reported to the public through the GFTV communications channels.
GFTV's General Manager is Thyda Chhum. Start-up capital and ongoing financial support as required is provided by Genevieve's Restaurant, Siem Reap. The Village opened for business on November 22, 2015 with 10 individual producing members and 2 producing organizations which train and employ persons with disabilities.
