United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus - VIDEO TOUR (Nicosia, Cyprus)
It's hard to avoid one of the most prominent landscapes in Nicosia, that being: United Nations Buffer Zone! So we decided to walk along it for a few miles to take a look around. There were armed guards at certain points with signs telling people to take no pictures. Kinda crazy really! You can see Turkish flags in the distance (From the Nicosia side), very sad and troubling that this can exist after 40 years!
------
The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the ceasefire of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and the de facto partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus (southern Cyprus save for the British Sovereign Base Areas) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the North. The zone, also known as the Green Line (Greek: Πράσινη Γραμμή, Prasini Grammi; Turkish: Yeşil Hat), stretches for 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina. The zone cuts through the centre of Nicosia, separating the city into southern and northern sections. In total, it spans an area of 346 square kilometres (134 sq mi), varying in width from less than 20 metres (66 ft) to more than 7 kilometres (4.3 mi).The line is also referred to as the Attila Line, named after the Turkish code-name for the 1974 military intervention: Operation Atilla. Turkish forces built a barrier on the zone's northern side, consisting mainly of barbed-wire fencing, concrete wall segments, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields.
Some 10,000 people live in several villages and work on farms located within the zone; the village of Pyla is famous for being one of the few remaining villages in Cyprus where Greek and Turkish Cypriots still live side by side. Other villages are Deneia, Athienou and Troulloi. Some areas are untouched by human interference and have remained a safe haven for flora and fauna.

Breathtaking Santorini - Beauty on a powder keg
The Santorini archipelago is a gem, but is located on a veritable powder keg. It is only a matter of time before the volcano, the crater rim of which gave us this island world, erupts again. Since January 2011, threatening rumblings have been perceived beneath the archipelago.
On Santorini, it's a case of getting nowhere fast without a mule. Whether the restaurant terraces above the abyss of Oia, the hotels on the breath-taking cliffs of Imerovigli or Firostefani, it was only with the help of the stubborn climbing artists, that these daring constructions were made possible. Antonis Vlachos has ten strong mules that work for him. He transports almost everything with them: stones, food or the typically blue paint for the church domes.
Santorini is a tourist magnet and up to five cruise ships call in at the islands daily. However, there is no port, just a narrow, concrete quay. Without the tender boats, no guests would ever reach the shore.

Polis = City-State
Greece was divided into city-states, each known as a polis. The two main city-states were Sparta and Athens. The greatest of these was Athens which was a center of intellectual and cultural development - “the nursery of western civilization.” What do you think that means?
Government & Education
Athenian democracy was for free, male Athenians only. Education for men was highly valued. Only boys of wealthy families attended schools. The term academy comes from Athens.
Structure of the Polis
Each polis was built around an acropolis, a fortified hill with the temple of the local god at the top.
At the foot of the acropolis was the agora, an open area used as a marketplace. By 700 B.C. this inner part of the polis had become a city. With the villages and farmland around it, it made up a city-state
Athens
Athens was knows for its great navy and was a rival of Sparta. Its ships were known as triremes because they had three levels of rowers
Battle of Marathon
The Persians were defeated by the Athenians at the Battle of Marathon. The Athenians were so joyful in victory that they sent a professional runner, Pheidippides, back to Athens
Messenia
Messenia is a regional unit in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese, one of 13 regions into which Greece has been divided by the Kallikratis plan, implemented 1 January 2011. Before 2011 Messenia was a nomos. The capital and the biggest city of Messenia in either case has been the city of Kalamata.

Geography
Greece is a peninsula about the size of Louisiana in the Mediterranean Sea.
It’s very close to Egypt, the Persian empire (includes Turkey) and Rome.
Greek geography
Greece is mountainous
Greek communities often times developed independently because of the mountains, thus they were diverse
As a result, they fought each other a lot.
Technology results from necessity
Since Greek coastal cities were sandwiched between the ocean and the sea, they developed an awesome navy for trading and fighting.
Technology results from scarcity
All cities need fresh water. This is a Greek aqueduct, basically a brick water pipe.
The first aqueduct was Assyrian, but most ancient societies had them.
Political: Athens was the first democracy
Democracy: type of government where people vote.
Well, actually, Athens was a direct democracy where people vote on everything.
The U.S. today is a representative democracy, where we vote for people to make decisions for us.
United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus
The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarised zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, that was established in 1974 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and de facto partitions the island into the area controlled by the Government of Cyprus in the South and that under the administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the North. The zone runs for more than 180.5 kilometres along what is colloquially known as the Green Line and varying between less than 20 metres and more than 7 kilometres wide has an area of 346 square kilometres.
The zone stretches for 180 kilometres from the western part of near Kato Pyrgos to the east just south of Famagusta. It cuts through the centre of the old town of Nicosia, separating the city into southern and northern sections. There is also a buffer zone around the Kokkina exclave in western Cyprus. The width of the zone ranges from few metres or feet in central Nicosia, to 6.1 kilometres at the village of Athienou. There is no buffer zone along the common border between the eastern British Sovereign Base Area and the area under Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot control.
