Our Town had its first performance 75 years ago at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton. Now, a city-wide celebration with the beloved classic at its center is taking place in New Brunswick. State of the Arts NJ finds out how the George Street Playhouse's production of Thornton Wilder's play about small town America is connecting the community in New Brunswick. New Brunswick: Our Town included a city-wide painting event, a production by the American Repertory Ballet, a photo contest, and a new interview-based play, Our Town Now. Our Town, starring 4-time Tony award-winner Boyd Gaines, also marks the first time that the George Street Playhouse has collaborated with actors from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Paul Robeson at Crossroads
The Tony® Award-winning Crossroads Theatre Company presents PAUL ROBESON by Phillip Hayes Dean from September 5 to 15, 2019 as the inaugural production of the brand-new state-of-the-art New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.
Tickets start as low as $25.
“This play is a powerful look at the many facets of Robeson - the man and the celebrity,” said Marshall Jones, III, Producing Artistic Director of Crossroads & professor at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, which stars veteran Broadway performer Nathaniel Stampley Jr in the title role.
This live stage play is a powerful chronicle of the life of a world-renowned athlete/scholar/activist/actor. Tracing significant events of his life, the play reveals how Mr. Robeson faces the dynamics of the prevalent presence of racism in the early part of the twentieth century. Triumphing over this struggle makes Mr. Robeson a modern day hero as he used his influence and stature to enlighten those around him.

Jacque Rubel
Born in Canada, Jacque Rubel moved to New Brunswick when she got married and became a key figure in the development of the arts. Early on, Rubel got involved in arts-related programs for youth in Griggstown. When the State Arts Council was forming, she established the New Jersey State Teen Arts Program. Working with Bernie Busch, the longtime director of the Historical Commission, and Byron Kelly, Rubel helped found the County Cultural Heritage Commissions and served as one of the first commissioners of the Middlesex County Cultural Heritage Commission. In the interview, Rubel discusses how she and others envisioned New Brunswick as a cultural center. Over the years, she helped establish Opera Works, a non-profit organization, and organized workshops and conferences, including “Arts Come of Age” in conjunction with Rutgers. Rubel describes tensions surrounding the development of the George Street Playhouse and the creative commitment of those who ran the Crossroads Theater. She also discusses key figures in redevelopment, the role Rutgers played and missed opportunities. Rubel currently heads the Aging in Place Partnership.
