colonial beach.
(just a bit of info about the beach)
Colonial Beach is a town in Westmoreland County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,542 at the 2010 census. Possessing the second-largest beachfront in the state, Colonial Beach was a popular resort town in the early to mid-20th century, before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge made ocean beaches on the Eastern Shore of Maryland more accessible to visitors from Washington, D.C. The family of Alexander Graham Bell maintained a summer home in Colonial Beach, the Bell House, which still stands today. Sloan Wilson, author of The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, retired and died in Colonial Beach. George Washington, the first President of the United States, was born near here at what is now the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. As of 2011, the James Monroe Family Home Site, birthplace of President James Monroe, now has a small monument to him.
History
The town was first settled in 1650 by the great-great grandfather of President James Monroe, as Monrovia.
Colonial Beach emerged as a bathing and fishing resort in the late 19th century known as the Playground on the Potomac. Prior to automobile travel, most visitors arrived by boat from Washington, D.C.
The town was incorporated on 25 February 1892 and there was extensive construction of houses, summer cottages, and hotels. Arguably the most famous of these structures is the Alexander Graham Bell house which still stands on Irving Avenue as the Bell House Bed and Breakfast.
The area was at the center of the Potomac River Oyster Wars between Virginia watermen and the Maryland State Oyster Police that lasted from the late 19th century to the 1960s.
The town began to gradually decline as the automobile made travel to more distant ocean beaches more feasible. However, because gambling was legal in Maryland and the Maryland state line ends at the low-water mark of Virginia's Potomac River shore, from 1949to 1958, Colonial Beach offered slot machines in pier casinos extending into Maryland waters. This temporarily revitalized the town, although it was sometimes called the poor man's Las Vegas.However, the piers burned in the 1960s in a devastating fire and the town continued to decline.

The town is ranked fifth-safest place to live in Virginia by Safewise.

SUMMARY
=======
The George Washington Birthplace National Monument is a national monument in Westmoreland County, Virginia, United States. This site was developed in the mid-17th century as a colonial tobacco plantation by Englishman John Washington. A member of the assembly, he was a great-grandfather of George Washington, general and the first United States president. George Washington was born in this house on February 22, 1732. He lived here until age three, returning later to live here as a teenager.
Before the 20th century, the original house was lost, but the foundation outlines of Washington's house are marked. The public park was established in 1930 and in 1931 a memorial house was built in historicist style to mark the site and to represent an 18th-century tobacco plantation. The historic park opened in 1932, during the Great Depression. At the entrance to the grounds, now maintained and operated by the National Park Service, is a Memorial Shaft obelisk of Vermont marble; it is a one-tenth scale replica of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
The monument (referring to the house, property and memorial complex) and its preceding plantation, which eventually would be called Wakefield, are located at the confluence of Popes Creek and the larger Potomac River, and is representative of 18th-century Virginia tobacco plantations. The area has been restored, planted and maintained with farm buildings, groves of trees, livestock, gardens, and crops of tobacco and wheat, to represent the environment Washington knew here as a boy.

George Washington's Geothermal Upgrade
As the father of our country, George Washington was known as a forward thinker and an innovator. Now, visitors to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Virginia can experience that same spirit when they visit a building that is heated and cooled by a geothermal heat pump. Special Correspondent Josh Zepps follows each step as National Park Service workers complete the archeologically sensitive engineering project inside and outside the Memorial House near the site where Washington was born in 1732. Homeowners can get similar systems installed on their own property and qualify for federal tax breaks to help cover the cost.
Josh interviews Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, who explains how the government went about putting modern efficiency equipment on the historic building while respecting its 18th Century heritage. Josh also talks to chief engineer Mike Strasburg, who discusses how the system will be installed without interfering with historic artifacts that may be buried on the property. HVAC Specialist Rich Abernathy tells how the equipment will be place inside the home without unnecessarily cutting through walls and floors. Once the drilling and geothermal system are complete, Josh tours the building now that its has air-conditioning for the first time.

General George Washington established his headquarters in this area at the junction of the American encampments to the east and the French encampments to the north. Here he set up two tents: a large one for meeting with his staff and for dining, and a smaller one as his private office and sleeping quarters.
