New Georgetown Emergency Center
As the northeast deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Georgetown County Emergency Management begins operating a super high-tech room lined with ten large flat video monitors and projection screens. Designed to improve safety and responsiveness, officials said they hope it will never have to be used for its ultimate purpose. A larger-than-expected crowd got a glimpse of Georgetown County's central command and control facility on Thur., Nov. 15, when the county hosted a dedication ceremony for its newly expanded Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on Highmarket Street--site of the Georgetown County Emergency Services administration building. Sam Hodge, Georgetown County Emergency manager, said the 3,200-square-foot addition allows the nerve center to have sufficient space to house municipal, state, federal partners, along with county personnel, who may be on duty around the clock. The former EOC was limited to about 720 sq. ft. EOC visitors on Thursday saw work tables all over the coordination room. Chairs were covered with colored vests, which were labeled with bold lettering showing a person's job during a response or recovery effort. A red vest said Volunteers Group Supervisor. County officials say planning for the addition started about two years ago. Funds totaling $828,000 for the building and equipment were allocated through the Capital Improvement Plan. This is the third EOC for the county. The first was upstairs in a Broad Street building now being converted into a new Georgetown County Museum location. EOC was there until 2003, when it moved to Highmarket. County Administrator Sel Hemingway welcomed guests, emergency representatives from Horry,Marion,Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. He talked about Hurricane Sandy's recovery under way. Despite the best efforts of all us and all our brothers and sisters across the country for this endeavor, we fight a losing battle, Hemingway said. There will be losses and we can only do the best we can to minimize them. County Council Chairman Johnny Morant says the construction project was a tremendous task and he was grateful for the work conducted by all. It was built with 200 yards of concrete to safe-room standards, Morant says. And is rated to withstand 150 MPH winds from hurricanes and tornados. Electric service is backed-up by a 220 KW emergency generator, and 30,000 feet of data cabling went into the facility. He announces the unveiling of a dedication plaque, joining with Georgetown City Council Members Paige Sawyer and Peggy Wayne, Georgetown County Council Members Ron Charlton, Bob Anderson and Austin Beard, and City of Georgetown Mayor Jack Scoville. Mercom of Pawleys Island installed a video streaming camera on the ceiling, video teleconferencing (VTC), video links to schools and video cameras to the outside of the building, because it has no windows. The county's internet technology staff assisted. There are local, county, state and national news feeds coming in through connections from Southern Coastal Cable and Time Warner, Hodge said. The space the EOC previously occupied will be used to expand the county's disaster call center. Coastal Structures of Georgetown was the general contractor and architects were Tych and Walker, LLP. Mercom recently announced a new plant on Pawleys Island with hiring expected for its business of designing and installing such information technology systems as now operated by Georgetown County.

October 30-31, 2019 | Raised in North Carolina, Thomas Berry, C.P. (1914-2009), entered the Passionists in 1933. After defending his doctoral thesis at the Catholic University of America in 1948, he journeyed to China; the experiences there profoundly shaped Berry’s life and launched him into the study of Asian religions and cultures. During his years at Fordham University (1966-1981), Fr. Berry founded the Riverdale Center for Religious Research to facilitate reflection on modes of spiritual transformation through experiencing the great mysteries of reality. Particularly concerned about the growing ecological crisis, he wrote The Universe Story with Brian Swimme, later expanded into the Journey of the Universe project. At the age of 80, he returned to North Carolina, continuing to lecture and write as a cultural historian and later a “geologian” until his death in 2009.
Berry pioneered in-depth, study of religions in U.S. Catholic higher education, establishing a history of religions program in the Fordham University Graduate Department of Theology in 1966. He encouraged generations of scholars of Asian traditions, comparative studies, interreligious dialogue, and religious reflection on ecological challenges. While president of the American Teilhard Association, he expanded his vision, writing, and lecturing in the emerging field of religions and ecology, especially writing on the cosmology of religions. This conference celebrated Thomas Berry’s intellectual journey and The Great Work,” underscoring his contributions to the study of religions and cultures, Teilhardian studies, religions and ecology, and the Earth community’s way into the future.
The October 30 opening session took place in Dahlgren Chapel, the reception and book signing took place on the second floor of Healy Hall, and the October 31 sessions will took place in Copley Formal Lounge.
This event was co-sponsored by Georgetown University's Office of the President, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, and Catholic Studies Program with the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University.
