Georgetown Colorado - A Semi-Abandoned Ghost Town
Georgetown is a breathtaking ghost town that sits 8,530 feet above sea level. It is nestled on the upper side of Clear Creek Valley, in Clear Creek County Colorado. The town is referred to as a “Territorial Charter Municipality”; however, it is considered a semi-abandoned town. This is because it once housed 10,000 residents and now holds just over 1,000 people. This town is far from dead and is fortunate not to be a complete ghost town or have succumbed to wildfire. In fact, it is one of the most well-preserved mining communities from the mid-1800s.
The town was started as a simple gold mining camp in 1859 during the Pike's Peak gold rush. Gold gave Georgetown its start however, it was silver that made the town the largest silver producer in Colorado (until 1878 when Leadville surpassed it). Although the town is small today, it...

The Loop: Then and Now
The Georgetown Loop Railroad® was one of Colorado's first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time. Today, the Loop is once again a popular tourist attraction and an exceptional way to see the Clear Creek Valley.
THREE MILES OF MARVELOUS ADVENTURE.
The Loop takes you between Georgetown and Silver Plume, over 2 miles apart. The tracks scale an elevation of 640 feet over mountainous terrain, requiring trestles, cuts, fills, loops, and curves totaling 3.1 miles of narrow gauge track.
AN ENGINEERING FEAT FOR ITS TIME.
The once-thriving mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume lie two miles apart in a steep, narrow mountain canyon. To connect the two, the railroad's builders designed a corkscrew route that traveled twice the distance, slowly gaining more than 600 feet in elevation. The route included horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4%, and four bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil's Gate High Bridge.
The Colorado & Southern Railway operated the line for passengers and freight from 1899 to 1938, when it was abandoned.

I moved to Washington D.C on August 2nd of this year, but this is footage of the days leading up to the big move.
I packed and moved all by myself, so it was a process, to say the least.

2018 Georgetown Commencement Speaker Brendan Tuohey
It's normal everyday people that are striving for a shared and peaceful existence, including police and community developing safer neighborhoods through sports.
Georgetown's 2018 commencement speaker Brendan Tuohey, co-founder and executive director of PeacePlayers, shared how his work has allowed him to travel to many places to witness struggles and to meet with heroic individuals.
Participants of PeacePlayers have found it in themselves to be righteous leaders. They've been able to do so by knowing themselves, by being in the middle of things, by seeking heroic ambitions, and by being men and women for others. We too can all be righteous leaders.
With our political leaders and institutions increasingly divided, it's up to us individuals to do what we know is right and to see the humanity in others. We need to work together to solve our pressing challenges.
It is Tuohey's hope that students will take their Georgetown degree and use it to not only better their own lives, but to follow the examples of the Jesuits and to lead with self-awareness, love and courage.

SFS Centennial Honorees: Judith Sherman, Chad Griffin, and Austin Tice
At the SFS Centennial Gala on Saturday, President John J. DeGioia and SFS Dean Joel Hellman presented Centennial Honors to Judith Sherman (SFS’82), Chad Griffin (SFS’97), and Austin Tice (SFS’02, L’13), whose parents accepted the award on his behalf. Nominated by members of the SFS community, each of the three individuals have exemplified Georgetown’s Jesuit values over the course of their lives.
Before starting his final year of law school at Georgetown, Austin Tice (SFS'02, L'13) headed to Damascus, Syria for the summer to pursue freelance journalism, his dream since high school. Tice reported on the daily lives of Syrians and the state of the ongoing conflict, filing reports in major media outlets. In August 2012, just before he planned to leave, Tice was abducted. His whereabouts remain uncertain to this day. Less than a month after his capture, Syrian demonstrators eloquently testified to Tice’s impact, holding aloft posters bearing his picture and calling for his release. “Freedom for Austin Tice,” one stated in Arabic, “who lighted Syria with his lens.”
Judith Sherman (SFS'82) left the United States in 1992 to work in Zimbabwe, researching ways to combat HIV and AIDS. Though she only intended to stay for two years, she spent nearly three decades in Zimbabwe, Morocco, Guinea, and Malawi, battling HIV and AIDS in communities where up to 35% of pregnant women were afflicted. She created programs focused on nutrition, reproductive health, treatment for women, and human-rights based community service. Sherman also pioneered a UNICEF drone program bringing medication to more remote and isolated communities and transporting laboratory samples for early infant diagnosis of HIV.
Chad Griffin (SFS'97) followed an uncommon path to the SFS; by the time he matriculated, he had already worked in President Clinton’s White House Press Office at the age of 19, making him the youngest West Wing staffer ever. Griffin is the co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which orchestrated and led the federal court case challenging California’s Proposition 8, which set the stage for nationwide marriage equality just two years later. Griffin recently ended his 8-year tenure as president of the Human Rights Campaign, where he supported initiatives like the Equality Act, massive grassroots expansions, and new programs expanding protections for LGBTQ individuals. #SFS100

American Southwest (#22): Georgetown & Kodachrome Basin, Utah
Georgetown ... a small village of about 100 people; it, like nearby Cannonville, was named for a locally prominent LDS (Mormon -- Latter Day Saints) official. It had a store, school, and a post office; it became a ghost town in the late 1940s. There is a small (abandoned) cabin nearby, the last building of Georgetown.
Kodachrome Basin ... a spectacle of towering sandstone chimneys, changing in color and shadow with the day's mood - from red-tinged spires against a blue sky, to soft evening light settling over the desert. This color and contrast prompted the National Geographic Society in 1949, with consent from Kodak Film Corp., to name the park Kodachrome.
Nearly 70 monolithic spires, sedimentary sand pipes ranging from six to 170 feet in height, jut up from the valley floor or protrude from the sandstone. These natural rock towers stand as sentries of the park and campground and inspire an infinite array of subject only limited to one's imagination. The slick rock and semi-desert climate make this state park attractive to visitors all year.
