Brenda Cliette Thomas - Class of 2019 Inductee
Athletic honors are nothing new for Brenda Cliette Thomas. Considered the most talented female athlete to come out of Macon, Cliette has shown her outstanding athletic talent in basketball and track and field.
Growing up in Macon, Georgia, she led Northeast High School to a pair of State Championships in Girls Basketball as well as two in track and field in the early 1980s.
At Florida State University, she continued to excel in both sports. During her freshman season in basketball, she averaged 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as the Seminoles finished with a 24-6 record and made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Due to her concentration on track and field, she did not play basketball again until her senior season where she averaged 14.9 points and 10 rebounds. Her highest scoring game came as a freshman when she scored 24 points against both Nebraska and Army and her highest rebounding mark came as a senior when she pulled down 21 against Rice.
Track and field is where Cliette’s athleticism shined. She was a three-time All-American as a freshman at the NCAA Championships in 1983. She would later be named FSU Female Athlete of the Year. As a sophomore, Cliette was a four-time All-American in the sprints and helped lead the Seminoles to the outdoor National Championship. During her career in track and field, Cliette won gold medals at the World University Games, the Pan American Games, the Goodwill Games, and the U.S. Olympic Festival. She was chosen as an alternate in the 200 meters for the U.S. Olympic Track Team that completed at the 1988 Games in Los Angeles.
Cliette was inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Florida State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. She has also had an accomplished and historic career with the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department in her hometown. She joined the department in 1990, after graduating from Florida State. In 2016, she became the first female in the department to earn the rank of Fire Chief. She serves as the Fire Prevention Director.

**********************************************************************
The Alternative Baseball Organization is a developmental baseball organization for teens and adults with autism. The organization was founded by Taylor Duncan (a young man with autism) in 2016 to raise awareness and acceptance for autism and special needs through the sport of baseball.
When he was younger, Taylor Duncan was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 4. He faced obstacles such as speech issues, sensory issues, anxiety issues, and more that came with having autism. In fact throughout his childhood, he wasn't able to participate in competitive sports due to the developmental delays and preconceived perceptions from coaches. With the help of his mother, teachers, mentors, and coaches who believed in him, Duncan has gotten to where he is today in life: to where he is living with the goal to inspire, raise awareness, and acceptance for autism and special needs globally through the sport of baseball.
Today, Duncan is the commissioner/founder/CEO of the Alternative Baseball Organization, a developmental baseball organization for teens and adults with autism and special needs. The Alternative Baseball Organization not only teaches the physical skills to play, but they aim to help participants develop their personal growth through teaching them team chemistry, and better ways of communication. (Skills needed for the work force and their personal lives in maintaining friendships/relationships.) The organization offers the same type of environment as regular teams (structured practices and exhibition games (with real umpires)) all structured within an atmosphere designed to encourage participants to be the best they can be, accept them for who they are, and to instill confidence for each player to be able to fulfill his/her dreams.
Alternative Baseball has had requests from communities and neighborhoods in 25+ different states and countries for help in establishing their own programs within our network. We are working on an expansion program that may be launched some time in 2018. The ABO is also working on the 2nd Annual All-Star Game which is scheduled to be held on November 11, 2017 in Marietta, Georgia. More details on the All-Star Game will be released very soon. (As well as the current updates on how we will plan to air the game over the internet internationally) The Alternative Baseball Organization has been featured on all four television station affiliates in Atlanta and Macon, and they currently has an exhibit on display at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon, Georgia.
