St. Mary's Ga: Walking Tour
Hey there dollar-saving divas! I can truly say that Fall is my favorite time of year! I absolutely love when October rolls around because since my birthday is on the 21st, my sisters, niece, mom and myself all get together for a girls outing. This year we met up and had a spa night, and then the next day we set off bright and early on an adventure to St. Mary's Ga.! I had never been to St. Mary's before, but I was eager to check it out because it is the second oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. Once home to pirates, smugglers, and a robust shipping industry, the city now prides itself on a diverse blend of residents and has sustained a rich and varied history. I wanted to share my experience of visiting St. Mary's and so I recorded our day and all of the things we seen. From this video you can see that the city enjoys the festivities of decorating for Fall, so in keeping with the spirit of the season, I thought it would be a nice little Halloween treat~

St. Mary's Good Samaritan Open House
Greensboro, Ga. -- November 15, 2013 -- Saying, It's a dream come true, and, This hospital is truly a gift from heaven, officials welcomed more than 1,000 people to a Community Open House Nov. 10 at the soon-to-open St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital on Lake Oconee Parkway.
From day one, St. Mary's promised a modern new facility that would meet most of our community's health care needs, said state Rep. Mickey Channell. As you are about to see when you tour this great facility, they under-promised and over-delivered.
The new hospital at 5401 Lake Oconee Parkway will replace the 64-year-old current location on Siloam Road in Greensboro on Monday, Nov. 25, at 7 a.m. Featuring twice the space of the old hospital and a host of new technologies, the new St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital will make it possible for more people from across the region to receive the care they need in their own community.
Thanks so much for what you are doing, Good Samaritan Board of Directors Chair Joe Gorman told hundreds of people crowding into the areas around the new hospital's atrium lobby, including many donors to an ongoing $8 million capital campaign. You are going to make the hospital something that we never could have imagined. We're going to have big-city-type health care right here and that's wonderful.
The event began, as all St. Mary's events do, with a prayer. As we open the doors of St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital, we welcome our community who are in need our healthcare services, said Sister Patricia Loome, Vice President of Mission Services. We ask God's blessing on all we will care for in this hospital, for their families, for our staff, and all who will partner with us in the years to come.
Taking the podium next, St. Mary's President and CEO Don McKenna looked over the standing-room-only crowd and said, I think the word 'wow' would be an understatement. To see hundreds of folks come join us today as we do our community celebration is just amazing. Thank you for being here.
Gorman opened his remarks with a reference to the Greene County community's five-year effort to replace the current hospital, which opened as Minnie G. Boswell Hospital in 1949.
When I was reflecting on what comments I could to make today, I had to reflect on the last five years, the twists and turns that we've taken, he said. I feel like I need to pinch myself sometimes that it's finally here. And what a beautiful hospital. I think that as you get the opportunity to go through here, you'll be pinching yourselves, too.
Gorman also launched a theme carried by all of the speakers of the day, praising the leadership of St. Mary's, the Good Samaritan Board of Directors, state and local governments, the hospital staff, and the architects, contractors and sub-contractors who actually designed and built the new facility.
They brought it in ahead of schedule and ahead of budget, he said. You can't ask for any more than that.
Greene County Commission Chairman Ed Bullard picked up on the leadership theme, highlighting Gorman's role as Chair of the Good Samaritan Board of Directors. It's hard to define what good leadership is, but you know it when you see it, he said. I would like to thank Joe Gorman, especially, for the work he has done in bringing us to where we are today.
Channell took the microphone next, providing historical, emotional and spiritual context for the day. He began by noting that, as a boy, he attended the groundbreaking for Minnie G. Boswell Hospital with his mother, who later served as chair of the hospital board and, at age 94, was in attendance today.
This hospital is truly a gift from heaven, he said. Getting to this day was a very long journey, and I am convinced, with all my heart, that the hand of the Lord was involved every step of the way.
Recounting the hospital's recent history -- including its purchase in 2008 by St. Joseph's Health Care of Atlanta and their good-faith but ultimately unsuccessful effort to build a new hospital -- Channell said, Sometimes, when the Lord closes one door, he opens another one. And that's what happened.
Working with Catholic Health East, St. Mary's acquired the hospital on Jan. 1, 2012, and immediately began work on building a much-needed replacement hospital. Just eight months later, St. Mary's broke ground for the new hospital, and now, after only a 15-month construction process, is set to open the new, state-of-the-art facility.
From the start, this has been a team effort, Channell concluded. St. Mary's and Catholic Health East stepped up to the plate and provided $40 million to build a great new hospital. Without them, we just plain wouldn't be here today. And if you don't mind, please join me in thanking them for this great gift to our community.
