Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany ) German Pharmacy Museum
The German Pharmacy Museum (or Deutsches Apotheken Museum) is a small, intriguing museum but one in which you can spend hours as there are over 20 000 objects on display! This museum was the highlight of my recent trip to Heidelberg, Germany and I highly recommend visiting it as it’s a great experience for the whole family and you will definitely learn something you didn’t know before.
Situated at the Heidelberg Castle, the museum is accessible by funicular or by a ten to fifteen minute hike up hill. I recommend the audio guide available for €3.50 to give you the history of the museum – a must as it is rather difficult to place the displays in context without being able to read German. And the actual ticket to the museum is available as a combination ticket to the castle grounds as well. This ticket costs €6.
When inside, you are transported into another world. Here you’ll learn about the history of pharmacy and medicine as we have come to know it today. Ours is indeed a tumultuous time when it comes to medicine since large, profit-driven pharmaceutical companies dominate the industry. The rapid innovations of the last hundred years have helped in many ways but have also hindered in others. The once colourful apothecaries have been replaced by the white, staleness of hospitals, doctors’ offices and pharmacies. And no where is this more evident than at the Germany Pharmacy Museum in Heidelberg. Here you see a true apothecary, or pharmacy if you will, and very unlike our sterile, modern day counterparts.
And these little glass viles together with the book below (Journal der Pharmacie) date from 1794! The book was written by Johann Bartholomaus Trommsdorf. This is demonstrative of the art form of remedies in those days – there was something very special about the appearance of each bottle. And this is particularly profound since today many of the plastic medicine containers we come across are mass produced and are not particularly attractive.

Deutsches Apotheken Museum | Trip to Heidelberg Castle Part 2 | Ilonggo Me Vlog #12
This is the second part of our trip to Heidelberg Castle in Germany. We visited the German Pharmacy Museum ( Deutsches Apotheken Museum ) which is said to be the central German museum on the history of pharmacy. Its exhibits cover the entire German-speaking area from antiquity to the 21st century. After our tour around the said museum, we then found ourselves at the Heidelberg Tun or the Great Heidelberg Tun. It has an extremely large wine vat contained within the cellars of Heidelberg Castle.

Heidelberg is a town on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. It’s known for venerable Heidelberg University, founded in the 14th century. Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand on Königstuhl hill.
Surrounded by forest, Germany’s oldest and most famous university town is renowned for its baroque Altstadt, beautiful riverside setting and evocative half-ruined hilltop castle, which draw 11.9 million visitors a year. They follow in the footsteps of the late 18th- and early 19th-century romantics, most notably the poet Goethe and Britain’s William Turner, who was inspired by Heidelberg to paint some of his greatest landscapes.
In 1878, Mark Twain began his European travels with a three-month stay in Heidelberg, recounting his observations in A Tramp Abroad (1880). Heidelberg's rich literary history, along with its thriving contemporary scene, saw it named a Unesco City of Literature in 2014. Heidelberg’s Altstadt has a red-roofed townscape of remarkable architectural unity. After having been all but destroyed by French troops under Louis XIV (1690s), it was rebuilt during the 18th century. Unlike many German cities, it emerged from WWII almost unscathed.
It is home to Germany's oldest university, as well as to numerous others, and to a host of internationally renowned research institutes and research-based companies. The International Building Exhibition (IBA) shows the city and the scientific community working together even more closely in the future.
About 11.8 million visitors from all over the world come to the city each year. The population, too, is international: an estimated 45,000 of Heidelberg's inhabitants have an immigrant background – many of them are scientists and students. The combination of attractive countryside, favorable climate and urban lifestyle makes Heidelberg one of the leading cities in Germany in terms of leisure value.
First mentioned in 1196, Heidelberg was planned and built, together with the castle, in the 13th century. Heidelberg's heyday as the capital of the Electoral Palatinate began not least with the foundation of the university – today the oldest in Germany – in 1386. Heidelberg was one of the few major German cities to be largely spared the destruction of the World War II.

Heidelberg Castle
The most important single sight in Heidelberg is the magnificent castle on the hill. It is a romantic ruin, with enough buildings still standing to present a very good idea of how wonderful this complex was during its glory days in the 15th-17th centuries. Get off at the Schloss castle station, go through the arched gateway and walk left for the grand vista looking down on the town below. You can see how the castle is built on steep cliffs to prevent invasion from the front, with high walls and a dry moat protecting the rear.
As you stand in the courtyard surrounded by the castle, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive Renaissance façade of the Friedrich Building, dripping with sculptural and decorative architectural details. Built from 1601-07 as the living quarters for the Duke of Bavaria, it is embellished with 16 elegant statues depicting emperors and kings of the Wittelsbach dynasty, clad in stone armor befitting their noble warrior status.

Your basic ticket also includes a visit into the German Pharmacy Museum, which has several basement galleries covering the history of medicine and pharmaceuticals.
As you emerge into the castle courtyard, the next stop is the Castle Garden. Don't leave without a good stroll through these vast green terraces, which have quite a history of their own.
It is worth walking to the far end of the Castle Garden to get another excellent view of the town, from a different angle than you have seen previously. Several lovely fountains, are scattered through the gardens, especially at the back edge where a voluptuous river god lounges in a grotto.

Heidelberg is a college town situated on the river Neckar in south-west Germany. Located about 78 km (48 mi) south of Frankfurt, Heidelberg is the fifth-largest city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Heidelberg is part of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. A former residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle, the Philosophers' Walk, and the baroque style Old Town.
Heidelberg is in the Rhine Rift Valley, on the left bank of the lower part of the Neckar in a steep valley in the Odenwald. It is bordered by the Königsstuhl (568 m) and the Gaisberg (375 m) mountains. The Neckar here flows in an east-west direction. On the right bank of the river, the Heiligenberg mountain rises to a height of 445 meters. The Neckar flows into the Rhine approximately 22 kilometres north-west in Mannheim. Villages incorporated during the 20th century stretch from the Neckar Valley along the Bergstraße, a road running through the Odenwald hills. Heidelberg is on European walking route E1 (Sweden-Umbria).
Heidelberg is located on four tourist roads: Bergstraße, Bertha Benz Memorial Route, Castle Road, and Straße der Demokratie (Road of Democracy). Heidelberg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) is on the Rhine Valley Railway and is served by Intercity-Express, Euro City trains. This station is served by the RheinNeckar S-Bahn. The main transport hub of Heidelberg is the Bismarckplatz. Several main thoroughfares of the city intersect here and one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe, the Hauptstraße (main street) runs from here through the entire old town of Heidelberg. Heidelberg Central Station was nearby for many years, which was a combined terminal and through station.

Schloss Heidelberg, AKA Heidelberg Castle in Germany (2018)
Heidelberg was the very first German city we visited. We went back a 2nd time (a month later) because we didn't see everything the first time 'round... there's lots to see in Heidelberg if you've never been! In fact, we toured the Pharmacy Museum at the Heidelberg Castle on our 2nd trip (this'll be a separate video).
Most of the photos I took in this video were before and after our guided tour, most of which had to do with its history (the earliest castle structure was built before 1214) and got to see some of the castle's interior, like the King's Hall (0:57-1:00) and church (1:14-1:23).

Heidelberg Castle, Germany
The number one destination for every visitor to Heidelberg is the castle. You could easily spend several hours at this amazing destination – the magnificent castle on the hill. It is a romantic ruin, with enough buildings still standing to present a very good idea of how wonderful this complex was during its glory days in the 15th through the 17th centuries. The extreme mix of destruction and beauty conjures up the turbulent past of this strategic fortification, with crumbling walls and towers standing next to a complete palace containing a fully-restored interior.
