USA: Civil War reenactors parade through Gettysburg on Remembrance Day

American Civil War reenactors took part in the annual Remembrance Day Parade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. They marked the anniversary of the establishment of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in 1863 following the battle of Gettysburg.
Reenactors wore both Union and Confederate uniforms as they paraded through the streets.
One protester criticised the use of the Confederate flag, noting that he was tired of the Confederate flag winning the battle, because he said it's sanitises the Confederacy. And the only reason [the] Confederacy existed was to protect slavery.
The battle of Gettysburg is considered the decisive military action of the American Civil War and its turning point which allowed the Unionists eventually win over the Confederates.

Gettysburg - The Pennsylvania Monument and Day Three of the Battle
Visiting Gettysburg in early September we explored this national battlefield and got an appreciation for what occurred here during the America Civil War. Exploring the center of the Union Army's battle line, were it was positioned on the morning of 3 July 1863, we looked at the Pennsylvania Monument and the High Water mark were Americans fought each other on a hot, humid afternoon in 1863.

The Gettysburg Address
President Abraham Lincoln delivered an iconic speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, at the dedication of a military cemetery on November 19, 1863. In his brief remarks ... known as The Gettysburg Address ... Lincoln equated the catastrophic suffering caused by the Civil War with the efforts of the American people to live up to the proposition that ... all men are created equal.
This document featured by The Library of Congress ... on view as part of The Civil War in America exhibition in the Fall of 2013 ... is presumed to be the only working or pre-delivery draft and is commonly identified as the Nicolay Copy because it was once owned by John George Nicolay, Lincoln's private secretary.

Pennsylvania Supplies the Union Army in the Civil War
This short video is taken from the Pennsylvania Civil War Roadshow - a traveling museum in a triple wide trailer that is traversing all counties of that state throughout the four years of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This video is one of four which discusses the state's role in the war and deals with the commonwealth's industry which supplied the Union war effort. This was filmed at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

Civil War Museum of GAHS: then and now
Forming partnerships and designing lessons with real-world experiences is what this project entails. Nicolle Legore, LIU teacher of Autistic Support class at Gettysburg Area High School, together with Bryan Willard, history educator, had a vision of bringing their two classes together through history. What better way to begin than through the design and creation of a Civil WAr museum. But where would they mount this project? Here's where GAHS librarian, Vicki Saltzer, comes into the picture. She suggested the professional library inside the main library at the high school. So on Wednesday, November 5, both classes set to work and this is the outcome.
Abandoned House
I call this place the insulation home due to the crumbling insulation throughout the house. I used to be able to access the bedrooms through the living room but discovered that the roof had collapsed and covered the hallway during this visit. The home is gradually sinking into the earth.

Home video brings 1938 Civil War reunion to life
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- One hundred and fifty-six years ago, America was ripped apart by the greatest conflict it had ever seen. Two years into the Civil War there was no end in sight, and rebel forces were making headway.
The Battle of Gettysburg was the high-water mark of the Confederacy, as General Robert E. Lee marched northward through the Shenandoah Valley with designs on penetrating deep into Pennsylvania.
Over the course of three days, Union and Confederate armies suffered between 46,000 and 51,000 casualties, making Gettysburg the most costly battle in U.S. history.
The relatively new technology of still photography allowed people to witness the horrors of war on a large scale for the first time, but the ability to capture these soldiers in motion did not exist, and would not exist for another generation.
Seventy-five years after the Battle of Gettysburg, the surviving members on both sides of the Civil War gathered on the battlefield one last time.
From July 1 to July 5 of 1938, nearly 2,000 Civil War veterans—including around 25 from the battle itself--descended on Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for the 75th anniversary of the battle, this time encamped together, sharing the battlefield not in conflict, but in remembrance.
Louisville resident Ron Crimm, now in his 80s and retired from the Kentucky state legislature, where he served for 20 years, was just three-years-old when his father took him to the 1938 reunion to get a first-hand account of an historic generation that was quickly fading away.
“My dad just thought it was important that I be exposed to this thing. And as it ends up it was important. It was very important. I’m thrilled to be able to say I shook hands with men who fought in the Civil War, Crimm said.
By this time, motion picture technology had progressed to the point where people could buy a hand-held movie camera, and Crimm’s father had one--an 8mm Keystone. He took the camera along with him to capture the Civil War veterans in action as they returned to the battlefield. The resulting film had been forgotten in storage for years, until Ron and his wife Phyllis rediscovered it during a recent move.

It's extremely imperative to do extensive research on each individual battle and how you are to portray it. Because if you just run out here in the field and do what everybody else is doing, you may not be portraying it how it was truly done.

I don't mind losing, especially when it comes to showing what happened in history. Winning is always fun but right now when we're dealing with battles like Gettysburg and Chancellorsville and the battle of Bull Run, those need to be historically accurate and we try to keep them as close as we can.

We just acquired a small family collection of letters from the Civil War. They were passed down and have never been for sale previously. This auction is for... A letter written On November 2, 1862 in Findlay. It starts off describing mostly health issues then continues on to describe the author's political views of the time. It is very interesting to read due to its frankness. He writes that if a few hundred Abolitionists and a few hundred Secessionists had been hung perhaps the war would never have started. He also writes that he hopes the recipient has not changed his political faith. And hopes that the Democratic victories in Ohio and Pennsylvania and Indiana will continue throughout the other states. He mentions the rascals in our weak and corrupt Congress. I have not seen many Civil War letters with such good political content. This is very interesting to read. He also gives a rather long list of prices at the time. The price of cattle, hogs, corn, potatoes, sugar, coffee, butter and more. This is a great historical document giving lots of information including political views, prices at the time, and health issues.
