Ghadames or Ghadamis (Arabic: غدامس, Berber: ghdams / ɛadēməs; Libyan vernacular: ġdāməs) is an oasis town in the west of Libya. It lies roughly 549 km in the southwest of Tripoli, near the borders with Algeria and Tunisia.
The oasis has a population of 7,000, mainly Tuareg Berbers. The old part of the town, which is surrounded by a wall, has been declared World Heritage of the UNESCO. Each of the seven clans that used to live in this part of the town had its own district, of which each had a public place where festivals could be held.

The desert town of Ghadames is situated in the three country triangle of Libya, Tunisia and Algeria and is tantamount to being an historical oasis that lies within the Libyan desert.The Islamic Cemetery just outside the city gates is an impressive sight and a reminder that the town was once an important centre of the region’s caravan trading routes. A seven kilometre long wall surrounds the town that is entered via seven gates. In the corridors and gateways of the local architecture that consists of mud and gypsum, are protective signs in Kufi calligraphy. Saharan art is a mixture of Arab-Islamic, Berber and Byzantine influences. In 1986 the fascinating oasis town with its long history and age-old traditions was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although the drawings and paintings on the walls will eventually suffer due to the gradual decay of the mud buildings, Ghadames’ cultural legacy will hopefully remain in tact.

This region was once an important center of trade and was thus occupied by the Roman Empire and later Muslim Arabs.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old part of Ghadames stands as an impressive example of a pre-Saharan civilization and a present- day Arab community.

The trip to Ghadames organized by the Rawahel's camp was one of the best experiences I have ever been through. Alongside the great people I have gained in my life, this trip made me see the beauty of my country. The ethnic and the cultural diversity I observed has made it what It is today. It composes thousands of years of history, civilizations and ethnicities that have inhabited the land of Libya and north Africa. Thus, I felt within me the duty to unmask the existing beauty in Libya that is often neglected. I have made a video on the city of Ghadames and its beauty. To show the world the real Libya. This will not be my last video but a part of a series of videos of a project on Libya's beauty as a country for tourism in the future.

Off the beaten path, Ghadames is an ancient oasis town on the edge of the Sahara desert. For centuries, it was the stopping place for desert caravans, and was visited by the Berbers, Arabs and Tuaregs. Mud houses outline the town but what is unique about this town is its underground city, with a maze of streets that protect the people from the sun, wind and desert sand.

غدامس مدينة ليبية تقع قرب مثلث حدود ليبيا مع كل من تونس والجزائر في الجزء الغربي من البلاد على خط عرض 30,08 شمالا وخط طول 9,03 شرقا، وترتفع عن مستوى سطح البحر 357 مترا. وتبعد 543 كيلومترً جنوب غرب العاصمة طرابلس.
وغدامس هي واحة نخيل، سكانها 25 ألف نسمة، ويقال لها مدينة القوافل لمحطتها الرئيسية من الزمن البعيد، وتعد من أشهر المدن على خط التجارة بين شمال وجنوب الصحراء الكبرى ولها علاقة تاريخية مزدهرة في التجارة مع تمبكتو في مالي.
وصنّفت منظمة التربية والعلوم والثقافة التابعة للأمم المتحدة اليونسكو غدامس القديمة مدينة تاريخية ومحمية من قبل المنظمة، وقد كانت غدامس قديماً واحدة من أشهر المدن الأفريقية الشمالية التي لعبت دورا تجارياً مهماً بين شمال وجنوب الصحراء الكبرى بكونها محطة للقوافل، ودخل الإسلام غدامس سنة 44 هجرية على يد الفاتح الصحابي عقبة بن نافع الفهري. وكانت الديانة المسيحية واليهودية هي السائدة قبل الاسلام والدلائل كثيرة على وجود هذه الديانات الإبراهيمية منها وجود قبيلة قديمة تنحدر من بني وليد تحمل إسم يوشع وهو إسم مقدس ذكر في سفر يوشع في العهد القديم
يقول بروكوبيوس القيصري توجد هنا أيضاً مدينة تسمى غدامس، وفيها يعيش المور الذين كانوا متسالمين مع الرومان منذ غابر الأزمان وقد كسب الأمبراطور جستنيان هؤلاء جميعاً واعتنقوا العقيدة النصرانية طوعاً ويسمى هؤلاء (Pacati)، لأن بينهم وبين الرومان معاهدة سلام دائمة ومور هو أحد الاسماء التي وصف بها الليبيين الاصليين
وقد خضعت المدينة قديماً لسيطرة الاغريق ثم الرومان، إلى أن دخلها المسلمون، وبلغت ذروة مجدها في القرن الثامن عشر عندما خضعت للحكم العثماني الموجود آنذاك في ليبيا، وأصبحت مركزاً مهماً للقوافل ونقطة للتجارة بين حواضر القارة الإفريقية، واحتلها الإيطاليون عام 1924 م، واخضعوها لسلطتهم حتى اندحارهم منها ودخول القوات الفرنسية إليها سنة 1940 م وظل الفرنسيون في غدامس حتى 1955.
تقسم ثلاثة أقسام: المدينة العتيقة حيث السور والجامع، وغابة النخيل، والمدينة الحديثة حيث المباني المستحدثة. وفي وسط المدينة عين الفرس.
لقد وجدت منحوتات ونقوش حجرية تدل على وجود حياة في هذه المنطقة منذ 10000 سنة احتلها القرطاجنيون سنة 795 ق.م ثم احتلها الرومان سنة 19 ق.م وافتتحها العرب بقيادة عقبة بن نافع سنة 42 هـ.
وصفها كثير من الجغرافيين والرحالة العرب فصاحب كتاب الاستبصار وصفها في القرن السادس الهجري بقوله مدينة غدامس مدينة لطيفة قديمة أزلية، واليها ينسب الجلد الغدامسي. وبها دوامس وكهوف كانت سجونا للملكة الأمازيغية ديهيا المدعوة ب الكاهنة التي كانت بأفريقية، وهذه الكهوف من بناء الأولين، فيها غرائب من البناء والأزاج المعقودة تحت الأرض ما يحار الناظر إليها إذا تأملها، تنبئ أنها ملوك سالفة وأمم دراسة، والكمأة تعظم بتلك البلاد حتى تتخذ فيها اليرابيع والأرانب أجحارا. وذكر ياقوت الحموى في كتابة معجم البلدان بأن في وسطها عينا أزلية وعليها أثر بنيان عجيب رومى يفيض الماء فيها، ويقسمه أهل البلدة بأقساط معلومة لا يقدر أحد يأخذ أكثر من حقه وعليها يزرعون ويقصد ياقوت بذلك عين الفرس.
