Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | We start in bustling Belfast's City Hall and Ulster Museum, then head out to Northern Ireland's favorite resort: Portrush, along the Antrim Coast, where we taste-test Irish whiskey, scramble over some six-sided geology in the Giant's Causeway, drop in on a world-class golf course, and stomp our feet to some traditional music.

A Walk Around Belfast City - A gentle walk around Belfast City. A great city to chill in & explore.
Belfast City - A walk around Belfast city to explore its hidden gems...
Visit Belfast for some excellent sightseeing and sample great Belfast pubs, shopping and attractions. In Belfast city centre you will find the City Hall, restaurants, shopping and roads leading to city attractions such as Queens University. Belfast is a great city to walk around.
Being the Capital city of Northern Ireland means that there are lots of different things to be explored in this city and it is of course one of the most visited cities in Northern Ireland as well. Whether it is about the shopping places and centers or else about the museums and old historical places, there are always what you will fall in love with in Belfast, and most importantly, walking around this city is a recommended option.
Walking through the city, you might be searching for those best bars which you want to have a drink at ( you might be looking for those best restaurants which you could be offered with delicious food at ( and you might be one of those coffee lovers who will be searching for the best cafes in Belfast that one could enjoy coffee, brunch, or even get served with a yummy dessert (
Another part of walking around Belfast city and trying to explore it is going to check those historical places and buildings which will tell you more about the city. There are lots of landmarks for this city which one should pass by - even just walking beside it and taking some pictures - such as the case with the famous Europa Hotel. There is also the Grand Opera House where one could book a performance while being in the city and enjoy an Irish cultural night.
The list for those different places is long, because moving past the Grand Opera House, there is the famous City Hall building ( which is one of the most famous touristic places in Belfast and which you are allowed to get inside and inspect the whole thing as well as the garden outside in which there is a memorial for the victims of Titanic.
Walking around Belfast and exploring all the corners of this beautiful city, we have passed by famous streets, crucial shopping centers like the Victoria Square Shopping Centre which is considered the most famous in Belfast, and we even passed by Castle Court which is another important shopping centre to be found in the city.
The Commercial Court in Belfast is one of those places which are usually recommended for visitors for the different restaurants, bars, cafes, and even hotels which it hosts, and not just that, but it is also one of the places where lots of those old buildings and even bars are located - you will definitely enjoy a walk there and exploring all the beautiful things regarding this place ( The Commercial Court is found inside a place known as the Cathedral Quarter which is also one important spot to discover because it is located in Belfast's City Centre and invites lots of people to it (
We have to say that one of the best things about Belfast in Northern Ireland is the fact that most of the touristic attractions are located next to one another and within a walking distance and this allows for enjoying the scenery of walking the streets while going from one place to the other (
From the other recommended places to visit and the different things which one could actually do in Belfast, there is the famous Titanic Quarter and this goes back to Belfast being the home place for Titanic and the place it was built in ( there is also the Crumlin Road Goal ( there is Narnia & CS Lewis Square that is located in Belfast as well ( and the famous Belfast Castle (
These are not the only attractions to be visited in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but there are also those parks which are scattered all around the country and one of the most famous of them all is known as The Botanic Gardens ( which is near the city centre of Belfast, and this is actually making it one of the most famous.
One of the interesting things which we should mention about Belfast and walking through its streets is the graffiti or the murals which are found across the streets on the different walls of the buildings - this is one of the most interesting parts of our trip when we are walking the streets of Belfast - we get to see lots and lots of things.
Belfast, a place you should visit now.

Ballygally Castle Hotel with its Haunted Rooms - NI
This haunted hotel is possibly one of the most haunted places in the world or at least in UK and it has a very scary story - this part of the hotel is closed to guests staying - but you can visit the tower where the ghost room is and see how the story unfolded. The haunted building has not been touched in the recent upgrades of the hotel - leaving the ghost room as it was.
The haunted hotel is an attraction for ghost hunters and guests have told of ghost screams. The hotel itself is in a beautiful sea side location and it is a fabulous hotel - thankfully the haunted room is slightly separated from the rest of the hotel. You have to go up a round tower to the top and into the tiny rooms and you get a feeling for what it was like to be locked in there. If tempted - do check out this Haunted Hotel in the UK (Ballygally just outside Belfast - Northern Ireland).
For those who might not be well aware of Ballygally Hotel - of the Haunted Hotel as it might be referred to - it is an old castle that has been turned to a hotel and is located in the village of Ballygally in county Antrim, Northern Ireland, and even though it is more known as a hotel, people still visit it - or the tower - in order to check those haunted rooms which are found there and which are separated from the hotel itself.
There are different things that make this castle a different experience - that's of course apart from experiencing the feeling of the ghosts :-) - such as its location; Ballygally Castle overlooks the sea on the Ballygally Bay. The castle is strongly Scots influenced in style featuring corbelled cylindrical tourelles with conical roofs on top. The castle was built with high walls, steep roof, dormer windows and corner turrets; the walls are five feet thick with loopholes for muskets and a water stream used to ran through the outer hall to provide water in the case of siege.
This is one of the different and rare experiences that we have been through while visiting a castle or a hotel, but actually a lot of people agree on the fact that it is one place which they love to visit for the idea of being referred to as haunted and for the fact that the visit paid for it is actually different - not just an old thing to watch and go through.
Since it is now used as a hotel, the Ballygally Castle is one of the oldest 17th century buildings in Northern Ireland that is still used until these days as a residence and is also believed to be one of the best haunted places in Ulster.
The Haunted Castle; a lot of people are asking why it has been given that name. Being considered a haunted place goes back to the ghosts which are believed to be living in the place with the most active of them all is known as Lady Isobel Shaw who used to knock on the doors of the rooms and disappear - yes, it would be scary to be staying at a room like that - this lady was reported to die after throwing herself from the window when her husband locked her in the room and left her starving. Another famous ghost in this castle is called Madame Nixon who used to live in the castle in the 19th century and who could be heard walking around the place in her silk dress.
The question we keep asking ourselves is is it possible that people could think about booking a room in this hotel or castle if they know that it is known as the haunted hotel and is believed to have ghosts living in it? and we never knew whether the answer would end up being a yes or else will be a no.
There are different stories reported about this hotel which are related to guests seeing ghosts or feeling them and running to the lobby in fright and those which are related to finding rooms in a mess after getting them prepared for guests. The most important thing to mention and the one thing we consider the most important is the small room in the corner turret of the castle which is known as the Ghost Room and which is closed and not part of the hotel.
It is interesting to get to this castle - or hotel - and reach the room through this tower to see those pictures and stories written on the wall about the history of the place when it comes to those stories related to the ghosts, but we didn't try to sleep in the hotel to tell you about any other kind of experience there!
There are other different trips we have made to Ballygally before which will be considered close to the Ballygally Hotel - the Haunted Hotel - which include the Ballygally and Ballintoy trip ( We have also visited this hotel before to check one of the doors that appeared in the Game of Thrones movie ( and we also enjoyed the Ballygally Beach which is near the castle (
Are you up to such an experience with some ghosts in it?

Old Balmoral Cemetery Stockmans Lane Belfast
I'm at the Lisburn Road end of busy Stockmans Lane in Belfast. Just opposite the entrance to Musgrave Park hospital is the tranquail historic Balmoral cemetery.
Balmoral Cemetery is a cemetery in the Malone area of South Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was opened in 1855 by Presbyterian church men Rev. Henry Cooke and Rev. Joseph Mackenzie, on land owned by Mackenzie, after they had been refused burial by a Church of Ireland rector in another cemetery. The cemetery was controlled by a board of trustees which included three Presbyterian ministers. While most of the burials were for Presbyterians, other denominations were buried there.
Three Commonwealth soldiers (one each of British, Australian, and Canadian armies) of World War I are buried in the cemetery, their graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In 1953, the cemetery was taken over by Belfast Corporation. the cemetery is no longer open for burials and remains locked due to fears of vandalism etc It can be accessed by applying to Belfast City Council.
Notables buried in Balmoral Cemetery
Colonel Hampden Clement Blamire Moody (1821 - 1869), Commander of the Royal Engineers in China and Belfast
Reverend Joseph Mackenzie (1811–1883), Presbyterian Minister and co-founder of the cemetery
Reverend Henry Cooke (1788–1868), Presbyterian Minister and co-founder of the cemetery
Dr Wilberforce Arnold (1838–1891), founder of the Presbyterian Orphan Society
William Batt (1840–1910), architect
Prof. John Creery Ferguson (1802–1865) Physician and Fetologist, Professor of Medicine, Queen's College, Belfast
Henry Cooke statue- Samuel Ferris Lynn (1834-1876) 1876
Bronze Belfast
This statue of Dr. Henry Cooke (1788-1868), leader of Belfast's Evangelical Presbyterians, replaced a work by Patrick McDowell, the so-called Black Man statue of the young Marquess of Belfast, which now resides in City Hall
Cooke was largely instrumental in weaning the Presbyterians of Ulster away from their old alliance with the Liberals and Catholics against the [Anglican] Establishment, and substituting a new alliance with the Unionist Episcopalians against the Catholics. He is depicted in clerical and academic dress; it was inaugurated on 24 April 1876 by a great demonstration of Orangemen from all parts of Ireland
