John Wright Stanly House Haunting (New Bern, NC.)
John Wright Stanly House Haunting
New Bern, NC
The John Wright Stanley House was built in the early 1780s.
John Wright Stanley’s home is quite famous because of the political duel with Richard Dobbs Spaight. In new bern in 1802. And John Wright Stanley winning the duel.
In the 19th century, the Stanley family's Fortune started to dwindle and their home was sold.
And some of the descendants of Richard Dobbs Spaight lived in the John Wright Stanley home and that is where many believe that all the noise is coming from, from the continued John Wright Stanley and Richard Dobbs Spaight fight.
Another theory is that Lewis Armistead who grew up in Stanley’s home who became a famous confederate general. He led the ill-fated Pickett's Charge at Cemetery Ridge in Gettysburg in 1863. He was mortally wounded behind Union lines.
After the Civil War battle in New Bern in 1862.
General Ambrose Burnside established his headquarters in the John Wright Stanley house.
Many say that Armistead Spirit has come back to rid his house of Yankee occupants.
Many who go on the tours of the house speak about being pushed or pinched by something unseen many guests have spoken of having seen a ghostly figure in the empty rooms of the home and some have even said they seen the ghostly figure of President George Washington.
It's alleged that George Washington slept in this home when he visited New Bern in 1791.
Even some of the security guards don't like to go into the house alone many have reported voices and sounds of footsteps when no one is in the home.
And many have taken photographs of the John Wright Stanley house at night and their lens capture images ghostly figures looking out the windows and all kinds of crazy weird lights in their pictures with no other light sources.
Heck, I even had an experience while I was on tour in this house. I thought I saw a ghostly figure look around the stairway at me, and as soon as I focused in on the stairway, that's when my shirt was pulled with no one standing close enough to pull my shirt.

Ghost Of ~ Attmore Oliver House~ New Bern,~North Carolina.
The Attmore–Oliver House is a building on the National Register of Historic Places in New Bern, North Carolina. It is on 511 Broad Street and in the New Bern National Historic District. It was originally built in 1790 and enlarged around 1834. The house is white and features three stories and a large porch in both the front and the back. The house is also supposedly one of the most haunted houses in New Bern
The house is owned by the New Bern Historical Society and is used for Society functions. It is open for guided tours by appointment. The Civil War exhibit in this 1790 home includes a map of the New Bern battlefield drawn April 21, 1862, showing the locations of all the units of both the Union and Confederate forces.
The Attmore-Oliver House in New Bern has allegedly been the scene of some poltergeist-like activity stemming possibly from either deaths in the house during a smallpox epidemic or the spirit of the last private owner.
SEPIA did its investigation with a handful of Historical Society people present.
“There were a couple of things that were pretty interesting,” he said. One picture taken in the attic, when viewed later, well… “There was a picture of a… there’s like, this green colored fog. But it wasn’t a fog. It was very hard to explain.” And that seemed to move across the room — in subsequent pictures, I imagine. “We’ve never seen anything like it.” people in the Attmore-Oliver House have told me other odd stories. People hearing moans, for instance. A photograph taken in a bedroom that had that sparkling light show up.
Also, a door shut as they were going through the house. They tried to re-create the event to rule out possibilities of wind or other things and could not.
They also got an audio reading while going up the stairs.
The legend of the haunting begins like this: during the Civil War, Hannah Oliver watched three of her brothers march off to war. Two of her brothers died in battle, while the youngest, George, was injured and returned home. George was 13 years old at the time and had run away from home to join the troops, as he couldn't bear his brothers fighting without him. Through these desperate times of economic hardships, hunger, and loss of her family, Hannah, her husband, William, and their three daughters held on as best they could. Later, after Hannah and her husband passed away, one of their daughters, Mary Oliver, continued to live in the home. Mary took over the family busi-ness, which at the time was selling insurance. Mary was born in the home before the Civil War, and she lived in the home for almost a century, passing away in her nineties in 1951. If seems likely that if anyone were to stay in the home in the afterlife, it would be Mary. It would be the most comfortable place for her to reside. After all, spending almost ioo years in one home has to be some sort of record. Mary's ghost is seen and felt frequently in the home.
Legends state that there are other ghosts in the house, and some believe that there are many of them. Some of the most
Chosthunting North Carolina By Kala Ambrose
While the majority of the furnishings in the home are period, there are only a few pieces that were actually owned by the families that once lived here still in the home. Something else seems to have been left behind in the home as well: spirits from the historic house’s past. It is believed the spirit of a young girl and an older man who haunt the house were victims of a small pox epidemic for which the house's residences were briefly quarantined.
City Hall New Bern North Carolina
Visitors exploring downtown New Bern can’t help but notice the impressive City hall which looms over the city landscape. This unmistakable landmark, which still serves as the home of local government offices, has a unique story and history which is worthy of exploration.
The current “City Hall” was first constructed in the 1890s, and was completed by 1897. The structure was originally built for federal offices and purposes, and was used as a Federal Courthouse, a local Customs Office, and a Post Office. It came under city ownership roughly 40 years after it was built, and has continued to serve the city of New Bern ever since - Today, the Board of Aldermen and other quasi-governmental boards continue to use the original courthouse and other offices. The Romanesque Revival building is the only one of its kind in the New Bern area, and the four-face clock was added after the initial design was proposed. Today, visitors walking through downtown New Bern can still hear the clock chimes, which ring every hour on the hour. A unique sight for visitors, the impressive City hall is a cool stop along any downtown exploration, and a unique addition to this charming community’s historic atmosphere.

Following the discovery of gold in North Carolina, an enterprising Cornish engineer named Charles McCulloch came to the gold fields of Jamestown, North Carolina to build a gold refinery. He brought with him the architecture of England and the latest technological development, the steam engine. McCulloch Gold Mill was built in 1832 and operated many years as an integral part of the history of Gold Mining in the State and in the Nation.
