Elephant Cave Temple of Goa Gajah
Goa Gajah also known as Elephant Cave Temple is a historically significant archaeological site and one of the most popular tourist attraction in Bali.
The Elephant Cave Temple of Goa Gajah dates as far back as the 11th century. Built on a hillside where two streams met to form a river junction, the site was deemed sacred and the temple was built for prayer and enclosed meditation.
The entrance to the elephant cave depicts a giant menacing face whose wide open mouth forms the doorway. While there are various animal and forest motifs depicted by carvings on the outer rock face, the giant face of the doorway is considered to be that of an elephant.
Goa Gajah is carved into a rock face and you enter through the cavernous mouth of a demon. Inside the T-shaped cave you can see fragmentary remains of the lingam, the phallic symbol of the Hindu god Shiva.
And its female counterpart the yoni, plus a statue of Shiva's son, the elephant-headed god Ganesh. In front of the cave are two square bathing pools with waterspouts held by six female figures.
What to Expect at Goa Gajah
Goa Gajah set on the Petanu River at the edge of Bedulu Village, Goa Gajah is surrounded by the majestic rainforest with trickling streams and walking paths constructed to take you through the trees.
Access to the main grounds is down a flight of stairs from a roadside parking area lined with refreshment kiosks, souvenir shops and art stalls.
As you reach the base you will come upon the large wantilan meeting hall and a collection of large ancient stone carvings, some which have been restored to their former glory.
A few yards of the cave that is in the middle of cave courtyard, there is a pond of Patirtaan, a place to take Tirta or holy water for the ceremony.
The holy pond was originally buried in the ground and successfully found in 1954 by Krijgsman from department of antiquities.
This holy pond is completed by the statues equipped by showers in form of Widyadara-Widyadari (angels) arranged in a group of three lines with 6 statues ( 5 statues have been put back).
Perhaps at first time there 7 fountain statues, a statue was set in the middle as interrupter but its existence has not been known until now.
The existence of 7 fountain statues are based on the concept of Sapta Tirtha, the seven holy water which has a purity equal to Sapta Nadi (seven purified river includes Gangga, Sindhu, Saraswati, Yamuna, Godawari, Serayu and Narmada.
It is symbolic meaning that taking the water from each fountain has as sacred value like the sacred of Sapta Nadi.
Throughout the temple complex, a variety of structures bare Hindu influences which date back to the 10th century as well as relics which feature some elements of Buddhism that date back even earlier, as far back as the 8th century.
The cave itself is actually quite shallow, yet inside you will find three stone idols wrapped individually in yellow, red and black cloth.
Visitors may be curious about the black soot lines that mark the cave’s walls, however despite their mysterious appearance they are merely the result of incense burning.
Those with a keen eye will be able to spot a number of indentations which are a testament to the places where priests once sat to meditate.

Temples are an integral part of the local Balinese culture and as an outsider, provide a fascinating insight into the local way of life.
However, visitors should keep in mind that temples are holy places of worship and as such, respect should be shown at all times. That goes especially for how to dress appropriately so as not to cause offense.
Best time to visit Goa Gajah

Goa Gajah or Elephant Cave is near Ubud, Bali, Indonesia is on the UNESCO list
Goa Gajah, also called , located east of Peliatan near Ubud in the middle of Bali. Goa Gajah dates from the 11th century and was discovered in 1922.
The entrance to the cave is a kind of monstrous creature with mouth wide open. The cave has a 13 meter long corridor leads to a T-junction. At the end of the left corridor is a statue (1 m high) with four arms of Ganesha (the Hindu god with the elephant). In the other hallway are three linga that represent the manifestations of Shiva. Just before the entrance is a statue of the Buddhist goddess Hariti. Opposite the cave is a fountain with six images of women. This was only uncovered in 1954 by the archaeologist JC Warrior. Along the cave is the river Petanu. Striking is the mix of Hindu and Buddhist elements. Around the year one thousand cave must have been used by Hindus; probably before by Buddhists.

Top 5 Places to visit around Ubud, Bali 2019
Hey guys!
We have visited 5 top destinations around Ubud!
1. Tegallalang Rice Terrace (00:27)
2. Bali Pulina Coffee Plantation (1:12)
3. Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple (2:01)
4. Tegenungan Waterfall (3:08)
5. Ubud Monkey Forest (3:50)
We were able to visit all 5 places in 1 day!
We booked the tour with Bali Suns Tour.
Tegallalang rice terrace was really beautiful, and they have Bali Swings and Zip Lines as well.
Bali Pulina Coffee plantation was also great.
Our guide was very informative and he took his time explaining the process of coffee making.
We were surprised the tour & samples were free!
Gurung Kawi Sebatu Temple is one of many popular holy water temples near Ubud.
Balinese and Hindus come to this temple to get Ritual Purification.
You can also experience the Ritual Purification with an offering, but we did not do it.
Tegenungan Waterfall was also beautiful, but we did not hike down for it as it was really crowded. and we weren’t going to swim anyways.
We were actually happy that we didn’t need to hike down to see the waterfall ????
Last but not least, the Ubud Monkey Forest!!
I was actually really nervous for this place,
because you read and hear things about aggressive monkeys!
These monkeys are actually wild, and there were many things I needed to remember not to provoke them.
Fortunately, we had an amazing time in the monkey forest!
Loved the temples and statues in the forest, and so many monkeys!!
We could not have enough of the baby monkeys.
We spent most of our time watching them.
As always, thank you so much for watching our video.

Elephant Cave in Bali Goa Gajah
Goa Gajah’s name is slightly misleading, lending the impression that it’s a gigantic dwelling full of elephants. Nevertheless, Goa Gajah ‘Elephant Cave’ is an archaeological site of significant historical value that makes it a special place to visit. Located on the cool western edge of Bedulu Village, six kilometres out of central Ubud, you do not need more than an hour to descend to its relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains.
Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century, built as a spiritual place for meditation. The main grounds are down a flight of steps from the roadside and parking area, which is lined with various art and souvenir shops and refreshment kiosks. Upon reaching the base you will come across a large ‘wantilan’ meeting hall and an assortment of large old stone carvings, some restored to their former full glory. The pool, excavated in 1954, features five out of supposedly seven statues depicting Hindu angels holding vases that act as waterspouts.
Various structures reveal Hindu influences dating back to the 10th century, and some relics feature elements of Buddhism dating even earlier to the 8th century. The cave is shallow; inside are three stone idols each wrapped in red, yellow and black cloths. Black soot lines the cave’s walls as result from the current-day incense burning. Several indentations show where meditating priests once sat. The northern side of the complex is dominantly Buddhist while south across the river it’s mostly Shivaite.
At the southern end are beautiful rice fields and small streams that lead to the Petanu River – another natural site entwined in local legends. Goa Gajah was built on a hillside and as two small streams met here forming a campuhan or ‘river junction’, the site was considered sacred and was built for hermetic meditation and prayers.
Even though the site’s name translates into ‘Elephant Cave’, you won’t find any pachyderms here. Various theories suggest the origin of the name, such as back in time the Petanu River was originally called ‘Lwa Gajah’, meaning the ‘River Gajah’, before it came to be called Petanu River. Other sources state that the ‘Gajah’ or elephant aspect came from the stone figure inside the cave depicting the Hindu lord Ganesh, who is characterised by an elephant’s head.
Ancient inscriptions also allude to the name Antakunjarapada, which roughly translates to ‘elephant’s border’. The cave’s entrance shows a menacing giant face with its wide open mouth as the door. Various motifs depicting the forest and animals are carved out of the outer rock face. The giant face was considered to be that of an elephant’s.
The complex is open daily 08:00 - 16.00. As with any temple in Bali, women during their periods are forbidden entrance and wearing a sarong and waist sash is a must. These are available for rent at the entrance. Goa Gajah temple celebrates its 'piodalan' temple anniversary on an 'Anggara Kasih Prangbakat' Tuesday on the Balinese 210-day Pawukon calendar, corresponding to different dates on the Gregorian calendar each year (consult a local). Entry tickets are 15,000 rupiah for adults and 7,500 for children.
