Tula WEAPONS Capital, WWII ARMORED Train + PRYANIK Gingerbread (Budget Travel Russia) {Tula, RUSSIA}
Budget Travel Russia #15
Tula Weapons Capital is an unusual civic slogan. Arriving at the Moscow Train Station, the unusually colored Soviet WWII Armored Train catches the eyes of visitors and enhances Tula's military reputation..
Painted in army green camouflage, the shades are certainly out of place in a passenger station. But then where else is it appropriate to store, and display, a train that saw action during WWII?
Train Number 13, now converted into a hands-on museum, is a constant reminder to Tula residents and visitors about the tactics and equipment required to defend the city during the Great Patriotic War. The train's presence also enhances the reputation of Tula Weapons Capital.
Jump on board with Matt to experience some of the conditions under which soldiers from the USSR fought to preserve their country.
To lighten up, and wind down, the day, Matt visits a famed Tula pryanik store, Tulskiye Pryaniki, to sample the local treat; a large ginger cookie with jam filling.

GULAG History Museum (Budget Travel Russia) {Moscow, RUSSIA}
Budget Travel Russia #18
The Gulag History Museum in Moscow can only just describe or outline the brutal conditions prisoners faced in these notorious prisons and work camps.
For over 30 years, the Soviet Union abused its citizenry with random arrests, arduous jails and forced labor in its infamous gulags. While there is no method to truly recall the physical struggles and mental anguish prisoners endured, the dark and eerie exhibit at the Gulag Museum gives some insight into this human suffering.
Matt obtains a glimpse into this particularly dark period of Soviet history.

Secret Gingerbread recipe puts Gorodets on the map
(9 Mar 2019) LEADIN:
The discovery of a centuries-old secret recipe has put the oldest city in the Ninzy Novgorod region back on the map.
Gingerbread has often been a feature of well-known folklore, but here in Gorodets, the gingerbread handicraft has made a revival.
STORYLINE:
These centuries-old wooden carvings are used to make gingerbread.
Their intricate designs imprint onto the baked goods or 'pryanik' in Russian.
Just like this large carving of a rooster on display.
Anastasia Suvorova is the head of the gingerbread production at her factory called 'Gingerbread Artel of Suvorovs'.
She and her family have been running the factory for 20 years now after finding the secret recipe in their house.
They sell the gingerbread to local cafes and bakeries.
Historically, gingerbread recipes have always been kept within the family, within Old Believers family (Eastern Orthodox Christians who existed prior to the reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow between 1652 and 1666). Often the Old Believers had to hire workers and in order to ensure that the recipe would not be stolen, the workers hired workers were strictly forbidden to bring any exact weighing scales inside the gingerbread factory - neither weights nor any specific measurement devices. It was strictly forbidden. All were weights were coded under the names of secret objects - stones, horseshoes, says Suvorova.
We found such a recipe in our house, and this was the beginning of our enterprise. The recipe said - three white flour stones, two molasses horseshoes, one black honey stone and so on. This is how recipes were encrypted because each gingerbread baker was proud of their own recipe and invention.
Gingerbread cookies were prepared mostly in the summer - when the berries ripened and bees were active.
Gingerbread's long shelf life meant people could keep them until the winter - when the Orthodox church celebrated Christmas and the Epiphany.
The Old Believers gingerbread patterns were said to be used as propaganda to oppose the Patriarch Nikon's of Moscow church reform.
Primarily, the families of the Old Believers were engaged in gingerbread baking, and these were so-called propaganda leaflets, which were distributed in the form of gingerbread in support of the old regime, opposing Nikon's church reform, explains Suvorova.
This led to Gorodet's gingerbread being outlawed, and in its place, their main competitor, Tula gingerbread became the region's most popular.
The oldest preserved baking patterns date back to 1775 and are kept in the museum.
In the 18th century around 85 masters produced gingerbread in Gorodets which were supplied not only to the capital St. Petersburg but also to Siberia in exchange for furs.
The price of a kilogram of gingerbread was comparable to the cost of a cow.
And the wooden carved baking moulds were even more expensive says Svetlana Yakovleva of Gorodets Historical and Artistic Complex.
The cost varied. A kilogram of (gingerbread) could cost 4 rubles (6 USD). Smaller ones cost a few kopecks, says Yakovleva.
I want to mention the price of gingerbread moulds. The cost of gingerbread moulds varied from 3 (4USD) to 15 rubles (23 USD) in silver. It was a lot of money for that time, one could buy a house, a cow, a horse for this price.
Today the Gorodestky gingerbread has become so popular a whole museum is dedicated to the treat.
The museum displays vast collections of carved moulds and gingerbreads made several centuries ago.
And the technology has not changed today.

COLD WAR Museum @ Checkpoint Charlie Berlin Wall 30 YEARS (Budget Travel Germany){Berlin, GERMANY}
Budget Travel Germany #4
A Cold War Museum, appropriately at one of the historical hotspots, is beside Checkpoint Charlie and the remnants of the Berlin Wall, 30 years after its fall.
Both figuratively and literally, Berlin was the dividing point between East and West Germany; Eastern and Western Europe and communism versus democracy. The Berlin Wall compounded the political and physical separation.
At the BlackBox Cold War Exhibition, there is a detailed overview of the Cold War, the 45-year political struggle starting immediately after the Second World War, when Berlin and Germany was split between the victorious Allies, especially the Americans and Soviets. From the time the city was quartered in 1945 until the Wall was broken and the two halves reunited in 1989, visitors learn about the incidents which set the world on edge.
Join Matt for a review about the Berlin Blockade, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Detente of the 1970s and then the perestroika and glasnost leading to the Wall's collapse. An especially timely visit because of the 30th Anniversary since the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Russia: places to visit | Tula is the capital of Russian weapons
This is our first video in our “Must See” series where I’ll tell you what things in Russia are worth your time to see and what should be avoided at all costs.
↓↓↓↓ Must See ↓↓↓↓
In this episode, we are visiting Tula. Some call it the “city of craftsmen” because ever since Medieval times a lot of tools, weapons, and other goods were made right here.
You’ll definitely feel the productive spirit in Tula at some of its museums, especially the Tula State Museum of Weapons. It is impossible to not notice this unique helmet shaped building that houses the Arms Museum, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. If you are at all interested in melee Russian weapons, hunting and sport rifles and/or hardcore military tech then coming here would be a good idea. You will definitely get inspired. If you want to know more about the history of when those weapons were used in medieval Russia then check out the Tula Kremlin right smack in the middle of downtown.
It may seem like Tula is all about arms which are only partially true. Tula is also the home to the totally non-violent Pryanik cookies and inside the Tula Kremlin, there is a museum where they will show you how to make one of these Russian sweets with your own hands. And since they seem to last forever they are a great gift to take back home. Locals consider their Pryanik cookies to be the supreme Russian biscuit with a totally unique flavor that you can only get here in Tula.
Tula may have a unique taste but it also has a unique sound, the sound of accordions! Tula is still a leader in accordion production to this day. Not only can you see accordions but hear them and learn to play songs for yourself. Who knows maybe you can take one home to impress (and/or annoy) your friends and family around Christmas?
All this and more will be in our next video. After that, we will have our first “Must Eat” where you’ll experience the best food that Tula has to offer and see where you absolutely must stop to eat while visiting this fantastic city. Food and vacation go hand-in-hand so our Must Eat series should be a great help to those who want to experience Russian food the right way!

BEST MURMANSK Tour (MYPMAHCK TYP) (Budget Travel Russia) {Murmansk World's Largest Arctic City}
Budget Travel Russia #6
This best Murmansk tour by foot (MYPMAHCK TYP) gives a different perspective of Murmansk world's largest Arctic city.
As a port, Murmansk serves Russian commercial and naval interests for the country's Far North. This holds true today as it did when the nation was the Soviet Union, or USSR, thirty years ago before the end of the Cold War.
While Murmansk is suffering economically, the city possesses many monuments to its local and Soviet war history, including WWII, or the Great Patriotic War. These reminders are scattered throughout the area, including the 35-meter statue of Alyosha Defenders of the Arctic, during the Second World War.
Creating his own itinerary, Matt strolls from the railyards to the top of Murmansk for a comprehensive outlook of history, geography, economics and people watching on a brilliant Arctic summer's afternoon.
Follow along on this MYPMAHCK TYP and you should agree why this is the BEST Murmansk Tour Video.
