Vatnajókull (Iceland) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Vatnajókull in Iceland.
Large areas of Iceland are still covered by massive layers of ice and snow. Inland the Ice Age seems to have survived until the present day. The mighty Vatnajokull Glacier extends across a huge area. Covering more than eight thousand three hundred square kilometres it is the largest glacier in Europe. The ice is hundreds of metres thick in this gigantic glacial system that covers an area that is larger than all the glaciers in the Alps put together.Entire mountain ranges have been covered by the ice masses of the Vatnajokull. The island's active volcanoes have frequently caused the sudden melting of whole glacial areas, sometimes with extremely dangerous consequences. In 1996 a wave of molten glacial ice flowed into a large section of an important traffic route on Iceland's south coast and thus threatened the entire infrastructure of the island. In some areas the gigantic glacial surface of the Vatnajokull has been torn apart leaving behind crevices that are several hundred metres deep. The Vatnajokull is far more than just a relic of the last Ice Age: it is one of the most impressive natural wonders in Europe!

Day in the Life of an Icelandic Glacier Guide
This is about my life in Iceland. I'm a Glacier Guide on the Solheimajokull Glacier, which is on the South Coast of Iceland. This day was towards the end of Summer and was a private tour I did for a friend. Hope you enjoy the video and get your self out to Iceland and get on the Glaciers!!

Hiking Iceland's Sólheimajökull Glacier
This was a day tour from Reykjavík called Glacier Experience”, managed by Arctic Adventures (This is not a sponsored video).
This tour took us to the Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland, near the city of Vík, and then to the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.
Sólheimajökull means Glacier of the Sun”. Needless to say, it rained all day, and according to our guide it also rains on most days. Icelanders have quite a peculiar sense of humor.
Sólheimajökull is a tongue of ice coming from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Mýrdalsjökull covers the Mýrdalsjökull volcano - one of the most active volcanos in Iceland. Katla is much more powerful than the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010, and closed the European air space for eight continuous days.
An eruption from Katla, or its even more active twin, Hekla, will certainly have a monumental impact on Iceland, and the world. Katla's last major eruption was on October 12, 1918, and lasted for 24 days. The eruption's lava extended Iceland's southern coast by 3 miles!!! (5 Km). No kidding!
It is estimated that the volume of floodwaters due to Katla's 1775 eruption was equal or greater than the combined volume from theAmazon, Nile and Mississippi rivers!!! COMBINED!!!
Iceland's beauty is due to the nature's power to destroy and create. In 1783, one quarter of Iceland’s population was killed when Laki (yet another volcano) erupted. The eruption was so massive that it changed global weather patterns, record snow to New Jersey, and draught to Egypt.
Shout out to our Italian glacier hiking guide, Francesco Li Vigni, and to Arctic Adventures. Thank you for another awesome tour! Can't wait to go back to try new adventures.

Iceland-Vatnajokull National Park
Vatnajökull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland. It encompasses all of Vatnajökull glacier and extensive surrounding areas. These include the national parks previously existing at Skaftafell in the southwest and Jökulsárgljúfur in the north.
In general, national parks are protected areas which are considered unique because of their nature or cultural heritage. The unique qualities of Vatnajökull National Park are primarily its great variety of landscape features, created by the combined forces of rivers, glacial ice, and volcanic and geothermal activity.
Hiking Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier
This was a day tour from Reykjavík to the Vatnajökull Glacier and the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lake, organized by Arctic Adventures (Note: This is not a sponsored video).
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lake with icebergs from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, which is part of Vatnajökull. It has a has a maximum depth of about 814 feet (almost 250 meters).
Vatnajökull is a retreating glacier covering 3,127 square miles (8,098 km2), and has an average thickness of 1,300 feet (400 m). The glacier is covered with ashes from the Grímsvötn volcano, which erupted in 2004, forcing air traffic to be re-routed. Iceland has a large number of active volcanos, some under glaciers, and some peaking above them.
This is a long day tour - about 18 hours, including the trip from Reykjavík, stops for food, stopping at Jökulsárlón and hiking Vatnajökull. It is absolutely worth it though. Alternatively, you could drive across the South Coast of Iceland and stay in Höfn for a night.
