GLEN ECHO AMUSEMENT PARK
PHOTO ALBUM LINK
Glen Echo Amusement Park served Maryland in 1891 and closed in 1968. The national park service took over in 1971.The park was for whites only since it opened until 1960. Many iterations of rides and games changes over the years. In 1911, the park featured a dance pavilion and miniature railway and a handful of rides. Glen Echo was also the site of the first bumper cars ride in the United States! It was known as Skooter and installed in 1921. In 1931, Crystal Pool was built to accommodate 3000 swimmers. The carousel was made in 1921 custom wood carved. Today the park is managed by the nonprofit Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. on behalf of Montgomery County, Maryland. From its beginnings, Glen Echo Amusement Park enforced a strict segregation policy, allowing only whites to enter and enjoy the park grounds. In the summer of 1960, this unfair treatment was challenged and became equal to everyone .. I want to thank Tom and Debra from GOTTASWING for the video. They have a good thing going on down there...…..

Annabel and Michael - Glen Echo 01May2010
Lindy hopping to Drew Nugent at the Bumper Car Pavilion at Glen Echo Park.
I asked Annabel to let me get a video of us dancing so I would have a baseline to compare myself to when I get back from deployment in the fall.
I dance my best when I'm dancing with Annabel, so this is a good gauge of where my dancing is right now. I know I have a lot to work on (and I've got a pretty extensive list of things to work on) and I can't wait to be on the dance floor again.

BAND: The Fabulous Glen Echo Open Band (
Any musician can join the Open Band at 8pm on the 2nd Friday of every month in the Spanish Ballroom. The Open Band has some of the Washington DC area's best musicians and makes new musicians feel very welcome. Over 30 musicians typically play, making for a very full sound. The stage was incredibly full this week, it appears that more than 40 musicians are on the stage.
CAMERA: Canon S120, 1280x720, 30 FPS
REMARKS: The Spanish Ballroom is a superb dance venue. Built in 1933 and restored in 2003, the art deco style ballroom has a wonderful 7,700 SF sprung maple floor which can easily handle 6 lines of contradancers.
This was the last dance in the first half. There were 4 lines of dancers before and 3 after the break.
