I found I had been dreaming of the days long, long ago,
And I woke upon Sebastopol, and not in Aherlow
I tried to find my musket, how dark I thought the night!
O blessed God! It wasn't dark, it was the broad daylight!
And when I found that I was blind, my tears began to flow,
And I longed for even a pauper's grave in the Glen of Aherlow.
A poor neglected mendicant, I wander Dublin's streets
My nine months' pension it being out, I beg from all I meet;
As I joined my country's tyrants, my face I can never show,
Amongst my dear old neighbors in the Glen of Aherlow.
So Irish youths, dear countrymen, take heed in what I say;
For if you join the English ranks, you'll surely rue the day
And whenever you're tempted, a-soldiering to go.

Glen of Aherlow & Galtee Mountains
Glen of Aherlow & Galtee Mountains
The Glen of Aherlow is a valley between the Galtee Mountains and the Slievenamuck Hills in South County Tipperary. The glen is approximately 14 kilometres long by 3 kilometres wide. The rich agricultural land is used for dairy farming and beef fattening. Sheep farming is carried out on the slopes of the Galtee Mountains. Coniferous forests cover the Slievenamuck hills and the lower slopes of the Galtee Mountains.
Lake Muskry was gouged out of the mountain by glaciers during the last Ice Age.
The Galtee Mountains rise steeply from the surrounding land and are Irelands highest inland mountain range, Galteemore is the highest peak.
The local villages are Galbally, Lisvernane and Bansha.
The landscape includes, mountains, hills, lakes, rivers, archaeological sites and rural villages.
The outdoor activities available in the Glen of Aherlow, included are - walking, cycling, horseback riding and fishing.
Accommodation available includes, Hotels, Castles, Historic Houses, Bed and breakfast, self-catering cabins, two caravan and camping parks.
Nightlife. There are many pubs with live music which also serve food.
Within a short drive are some of Irelands best known tourist attractions, included are - Lough Gur, Cahir Castle, Athassel Abbey, Holycross Monastic Village and Cashel.
There are good Motorway, Bus and Railway connections to the rest of Ireland

Walks in Glen of Aherlow and Galtee Mountains
Walks in the Glen of Aherlow & Galtee Mountains
The Glen of Aherlow & Galtee Mountains are located in South County Tipperary.
There are a wide variety of planned and marked walks with breath-taking views, to suit all fitness and ability levels and ages. There are looped and linear walks through forests, up steep hills and mountains, and along moderately flat forest trails.
Signs and information boards provide direction and guidance.
Arrowed marker posts delineate the walks for ease of navigation. The walks generally range from one to four hours in duration. The Tourist office can provide details on the walks.
Archaeological and Historical features, which are part of Ireland’s heritage, can be explored. Shown are two Passage Tombs built with large stones, the tombs are at least 5,000 years old.
Moor abbey is 600 years old.
A mass rock where mas was said in secret during the times of the Penal laws, 300 years ago.
Stafford O’Brien’s well where stagecoaches horses stopped to drink water.
Rock An Thorabh is a viewing point for Tipperary Town and the surrounding countryside.
Clonbeg Church and graveyard with the remnants of an older church.
The Nature Park is near the Christ the king statue, it is a circular walk that takes 1 hour. It passes through woodlands inhabited by birds, squirrels and foxes, also the ruins of a small farmer’s cottage from the 1800s.
Corrie lakes are embedded high up the slopes of the Galtee Mountains. Mountain streams flow down the mountains in ravines. Sheep graze on the mountains slopes.
From the top of Galtymore there are panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and distant mountains and hills. On a clear day one can see seven counties from the summit of Galtymore.
Lush coniferous forests cover the lower slopes of the Galtees and the Slivenamuck hills.
Get to experience spectacular mountain scenery and landscapes, the sounds of the countryside and the smells of rich vegetation, as you breathe in the fresh mountain air. This is, as close to nature, as it gets.
The walks are memorable and will leave you with a sense of achievement, a feeling of refreshment and an urge to return.

There is a Cycle loop, along small rural roads through scenic and beautiful countryside and villages.
