Glendo State Park
Glendo State Park is one of southern Wyoming's most popular boating parks. It offers visitors water-skiing, fishing and other water- based activities. Fishing is so good that Glendo has several fish records. Day-use and overnight facilities feature improved campsites, comfort stations, tables and grills. A commercial concession at the reservoir provides visitors with complete marina services, motel units and fishing equipment.
The Journey North 1, Camping at Glendo State Park and Brooks Lake Wyoming
On the first leg of our journey to Washington State, we visit Glendo State Park, 100 mile north of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Our campsite was in a remote area of the park, but one of the best areas to be with out crowds. Next was a high mountain lake just 45 minutes from the Grand Teton Mountains and half way between both Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park. At 9,200 feet above sea level camping here was not for the faint of heart. With snow still in the valleys of the buttes nearby, high mountain camping is very unpredictable. Storms can pop up with out much notice and temps can vary from 70's to the low 40's. We had all of that at this location. Although in the heart of Bear country, we were very fortunate not to see any of them, but the camp host spotted bears in the campground every day during our visit. We were always on the look out for bears and were equipped with our Bear spray just in case. One afternoon late we had a severe thunderstorm that dropped about 3 inches of hail and soaked everything in the campsite, forcing us to spend the night in nearby Dubois, Wyoming at a motel. We struck the campsite the next morning early to head to Colter bay in the heart of the Grand Teton National Park. This is a ground view of the Solar Eclipse at the Glendo, Wyoming Air Strip.
Eclipse 8-21-17 at 8500 feet Glendo Wyoming
Over Glendo State Park Wyoming at 8500 feet August 21, 2017. Arrived there about 15 minutes before totality to find 6 other airplanes with the same idea of using the Reservoir as a backdrop for the 2017 Eclipse. We got things all sorted out by safely orbiting at different altitudes, and communicating over the local 122.9 frequency. Wonderful views during the Eclipse and a great tailwind on the way back to Denver. Only took about an hour and 15 minutes for the return trip, glad I didn't drive.
