Korean Traditional Marriage at the Korean Folk Village (한국 민속촌) in Yongin, South Korea
This travel video is of a Korean Traditional Marriage reenactment performance that took place at the Korean Folk Village (한국 민속촌) located in Yongin, South Korea. The Korean Traditional Wedding Ceremony called Pae Baek (폐백). We've all seen it somewhere, either through a Korean drama or a family or friends wedding. Traditionally, the Pae Baek is a ceremonial practice where the groom's family accepts the new bride into their home as part of the family.

During the ceremony both the bride and groom wear Hanbok's (한복). These traditional outfits date back to the Joseon Dynasty where women and men of the Royal Family wore these decorative, bright colored outfits for formal functions or ceremonies. The 20th century has modernized the Hanbok's for practical reasons. But for the purposes of the Pae Baek, the Hanboks remain in the traditional sense where the bride and groom wears a head dress and many layers of the vibrant colors of royalty: koreanamericanmommy.com/2010/05/collages.html

Once the performances are over we find ourselves with a lot more free time to roam around. We both marvel at the lovely colours of fall as seen in the colourful leaves. We enjoy snacking on Korean rice cakes and Yeot (a sticky rice taffy made of natural ingredients like pumpkin). We visit some traditional Korean homes including a scholars house. We cross numerous types of bridges trying our best not to fall into the river. Finally, we enjoy swinging on some traditional Korean swings before calling it a day. Overall, it was a great experience that we'd recommend to others.

Traditional Village in South Korea (Korea on the Edge)
Looking for a comprehensive crash-course in Korean cultural history? The Korean Folk Village is a must-see for history buffs, cultural curiosity seekers, and travelers in general. Tale a trip back in time and see what life was like during the different periods of Korean history. The village was relocated from traditional villages around Korea and recreated here during the Saemaeul Movement (movement for regional development) of the 1970s, and no expense was spared in resurrecting the sights and sounds of historic Korea. Every aspect of ancestral life is recreated, from growing and harvesting crops to creating beautiful hand-crafted pottery, garments and traditional woven bamboo handcrafts called Chaesang. See traditional Shamanistic ceremonies performed beside the breathtaking backdrop of mountains and nearby river. This world class outdoor museum offers Koreans and foreigners alike an invaluable glimpse into the rich culture of Korean history, displaying reconstructions of 168 traditional houses from all of the different regions nestled among other buildings housing traditional artists recreating the handicrafts of their ancestors in brassware, masks, musical instruments, knotting and embroidery, furniture, foodÖ the list goes on. Visit the Manor House, the Korean herb drugstore, the traditional marketplace, the sculpture park, and the numerous folk museums arranged by period. There is a seemingly endless list of sights and scenery to be enjoyed, so take a trip to the village and see it all for yourself! The village is easily accessed by express bus from downtown Seoul or Suwon, and it is an experience without which no trip to the Land of the Morning Calm would be complete.

The HANBOK EXPERIENCE | Changing of Guards | Exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace | Seoul, South Korea
On our second day in Seoul, we visited Gyeongbokgung palace (a renovated 14th century royal palace complex), we noticed that a lot of the visitors are wearing very colorful clothing. Turns out, these beautiful dresses and costumes are Korean national dress hanbok!
Walking in the narrow streets nearby the palace I there lot of small shops where you can rent the hanbok. Although most of the women wearing one are locals, we do see a few foreigners as well. Turns out, there is no particular reason for wearing the costume other than just take a nice picture, and it’s not just women who wear costumes! By the way, if you are wearing a hanbok, visiting Gyeongbokgung palace is for free!
When we enter the palace, guard changing ceremony begins, so the palace is almost deserted. This time around it seems nearly half of all the visitors are wearing hanbok!
Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is also commonly referred to as the Northern Palace because its location is furthest north when compared to the neighboring palaces of Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeonghuigung (Western Palace) Palace. Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most beautiful, and remains the largest of all five palaces.
The premises were once destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (Japanese Invasions, 1592-1598). However, all of the palace buildings were later restored under the leadership of Heungseondaewongun during the reign of King Gojong (1852-1919).
Remarkably, the most representative edifices of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pond have remained relatively intact. Woldae and the sculptures of Geunjeongjeon (The Royal Audience Chamber) represent past sculptures of contemporary art.
The National Palace Museum of Korea is located south of Heungnyemun Gate, and the National Folk Museum is located on the eastern side within Hyangwonjeong
