Abandoned home encased in ice to draw attention to housing crisis
(3 Feb 2010)
1. Various exteriors of house covered in ice
2. Artist Gregory Holm working near ice house
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Gregory Holm, artist:
We decided we''d do this project. It seemed like good timing based on the fact of the housing crisis in Detroit and nationally, and to draw some attention to the city.
4. Close of water hose
5. Close of box in ice
6. Wide of house
7. Various of Holm spraying house
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Gregory Holm, artist:
I think it''s open for interpretation, the project itself. Obviously it talks about the housing crisis but I think it''s also supposed to be looked at as a tool for inspiration for, you know, children and people in the neighbourhood, and we are trying to give something interesting to look at, at the very least.
9. Various of people taking pictures of ice house
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Gregory Holm, artist:
This has been a real test of will in some ways, learning about what it takes to do something which seems like maybe it''s simple. We''ve been here for about a month and a half now and we''ve committed ourselves to the project so we''re going to be here until it completes itself, or till we complete it.
11. Various of fellow artist Matthew Radune spraying house
12. Various of abandoned houses in snow
STORYLINE:
Two artists have encased in ice one of thousands of abandoned homes in the city of Detroit, in the US state of Michigan, and they said on Monday they hoped their effort would help draw attention to the housing crisis that has battered the nation.
The two-storey house and its boarded-up, broken windows have been covered with sheets of ice that glow in the sunlight, and icicles reach from the edges of the roof almost to the ground.
The so-called Ice House Detroit project is the creation of Gregory Holm, a New York-based photographer who grew up in Detroit, and Matthew Radune, a New York architect.
It''s a poignant image in a city with tens of thousands of vacant homes and a foreclosure rate among the nation''s highest.
Obviously it talks about the housing crisis but I think it''s also supposed to be looked at as a tool for inspiration said Holm.
Holm and Radune have spent weeks in the often bitter cold spraying water onto the abandoned home.
The artists picked the house, which had been slated for demolition, from the state''s land bank.
In return, they agreed to pay the back taxes on another foreclosed house so that a Detroit woman could move in.
This spring, the house will be dismantled so the building materials can be reused.
Freezing the house wasn''t easy.
Even with low temperatures the ice melted when the sun came out.
First, the artists tried using rooftop sprinklers, but those froze.
They ended up using a system of hoses to spray the house with water from hydrants.
This has been a real test of will, Holm said.
Radune and Holm plan to illuminate their creation and film it on Friday, then make the location, in a rundown area of the city, public on Sunday.

TEDxPhiladelphia - Unintended Consequences
The moment that we recognize the impact of an unintended consequence, a new story unfolds. Ideas that arise from unintended consequences are deeply personal. An unintended consequence forces us to reassess our assumptions and challenge our narratives.
Unintended Consequences is the official theme for TEDxPhiladelphia 2019.
The daylong multidisciplinary conference will bring together engaging speakers, performers, and participants to share their stories and experiences of unanticipated moments, their challenges and unexpected opportunities that arose from this, and how it's shaped who they are and what they do today.

Thomas Russo: Global Value Investing: Factors that I Most Fear and [...] | Talks at Google
Thomas Russo describes the important ingredients of his tax-efficient, long-term buy-and-hold approach to “global value” equity investments. He touches upon the two aspects most important to his investments:
1. Reduction of Agency Costs
2. The “Capacity to Reinvest”
Mr. Russo’s presentation, in addition, focuses on factors which form a sort of checklist which Mr. Russo observes when attempting to reduce risks in his search for global returns.
Mr. Russo addresses a handful of investments which failed to deliver expected returns, believing that as Mr. Buffett is prone to say that ‘good decisions come from good judgment, and good judgment comes from bad decisions'.
Finally, Mr. Russo shares some personal reflections from his professional lifetime of “global value” equity investments. Such references cluster around the “Big Cs”:
1. Compound Interest
2. Character
3. Culture
4. Capacity to do Nothing
About the speaker:
Thomas Russo was born in 1955 and grew up in Titusville, Pennsylvania, a small town best known as the birthplace of the oil industry. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in history in 1977 and from Stanford University with degrees in law and business in 1984. He then joined Ruane, Cuniff & Goldfarb, where he worked on the firm’s flagship Sequoia Fund. In 1989, he joined Gardner Investments (now Gardner Russo and Gardner), a Pennsylvania-based firm catering mostly to high-net-worth individuals, where he manages the Semper Vic investment partnership.

The Price Is Right: TUE 5/7/2019
I haven't tried this before, don't know if it will work. I really would like to upload commercial-free episodes of The Price Is Right too, believe me! It also is beneficial because many of the times when my videos were blocked it was because of something within the commercial breaks that companies claimed copyright to.
That being said, I have no good video editing software and the one I want is $99.00 plus tax (CyberLink PowerDirector 17 Ultra.) If anyone wants to join me in my quest to get commercial-free episodes uploaded, plus the cost of extra electricity and maintenance for the computer I use to record the episodes and for my time editing them / making timestamps, you can support me with Venmo.
