ADK GVC Meeting 2016_10_12 SOLO CYCLING THE SOUTHERN STATES presented by Bob Berch
In March and early April 2014, while polar vortex storms
were burying Rochester in snow, Bob Berch was down
south bicycling solo from St. Augustine, Florida to Austin,
Texas. He traveled 1500 miles over 28 days, enjoying an
early spring and the adventure one gets from cycle touring.
Bob traveled through a few states he had never been to.
While most nights were spent in his tent, there were
stays with generous host families, a few extraordinary bike
hostels, and a couch in a fire hall. He followed the coast-tocoast
mapped “Southern Tier” route, and he encountered
plenty of other cyclists from around the world going east or
west. During the early spring the flowers came out (Texas
bluebells!) and hey, the trees had this moss in them. Of
course nothing is perfect, so you’ll also hear about the dog
chases and the one day of tornado warnings, but no alligators
this trip, maybe next time! The trip plan was hatched
on short notice at an ADK meeting as a longer, two person
trip, but....well, Bob will explain. Come hear his story, meet
some of the characters he met, glimpse the places he stayed,
and get a feel for what it is like to be a cycle nomad. Bob
will also give you a bit of Bike Touring 101 as he leads you
through his adventure.

Catch of the Day - The Fishes of Sungei Pandan
FAQ: For those who totally missed the meaning of the video ...
1) Why did you not release the fishes ?
I do not fish & I wasn't fishing. I don't know who the fishermen are either, but they appear to be poorly-paid migrant workers exploited by the state & its contractors.
2) What is the video REALLY about ?
Powerful (human) fishes catch less powerful (human) fishes — & eat them, or throw them aside in the aftermath. Amidst the daily exploitations of the catch of the day, has humanity ever TRULY loved anyone ? Or are humans merely following the corporate facts & the script for the act ?
3) Why did the fishermen not release the fishes ?
Perhaps they really need the food ? See below for more info.
Debbie Fordyce (TWC2), TODAY newspaper, 19 Mar 2015:
The men complain about lack of protein, expired ingredients, and spoiled food. Men arrive in fairly good health, lose weight when they start working — a result of the hard work and long days, as much as the food.
• Shameful State of Meals Given to Foreign Workers reveal what this country is built on:
• Foreign Workers ‘Served Unappetising, Stale Food’:
• Shocking Findings by NUS: 9 in 10 Bangladeshi Workers Fed “Unhygienic” Food:
• The Exploitation Of Migrant Chinese Construction Workers in Singapore:
4) What is the music featured in the video ?
'Catch of the Day' by Orphan Songs (aka Carl-Otto Johansson). Published in 2008 under Commons Creative license. As for the subtextual meaning of the song, see my summary at item 2 (above).
5) So it's ok for those who practise catch & release ?
Legally speaking, no. It is ILLEGAL to fish (whether recreationally or for survival) along Singapore's canals & public waterways, even if you use artificial bait & release all your catches. • See item (E) 31:
QUOTE: {{{ Fishing is not allowed at the canals for safety reasons. [...] If you see someone fishing at canals, please call PUB Call Centre at 1800 284 6600. }}}
6) What are the fishes seen in the video ?
• Clarias batrachus (Common Walking Catfish) - native
• Oreochromis mossambicus (Mozambique Tilapia) - non-native
• Various South American Cichlids/ hybrids - non-native
• Poecilia reticulata (Wild Guppy) - non-native
Dr Olaf Rötzschke (National University of S'pore), 'Longkang Encounters' interview, poskod.sg, May 2012:
And yes, none of these are native species. Your canals are even more globalised than your society.
• 'Bad' Biodiversity: Invasive Alien Species:
7) How did all these non-native invasive fishes get into the canals (& reservoirs) ?
They were mostly dumped into local waterways & waterbodies by pet owners & the aquarium trade. Since these species are aggressive, lack natural predators & are also tolerant of poor-quality urban habitats, they tend to out-compete & out-reproduce the native fish species struggling to survive in the harsh conditions of Singapore's concretized & badly-silted local waterways.
» Location: Sungei Pandan canal, southwestern Singapore
» Environment: Urban, poor-quality habitat
» Footage: Upstream (20 June 2011), Downstream (13 July 2011)

Description:
Hey guys! So today I am back with another video and today's video is Paranormal America Season 2 Episode 9 which brings us to Wyoming! Today we are talking about the ghosts of Fort Laramie!
It seems like hauntings are always tied to history; spirits from the past coming back to visit the inhabitants of their old stomping grounds. Therefore, I guess we really shouldn’t be surprised that this old Fort in Wyoming, which is now a National Historic Site, is thought to be haunted by not one but a whole host of ghosts.
To understand these ghosts a little better, you need to be familiar with a little bit of the fort's history. This old fort dates back to 1834 when it was a trading post and known as Fort William. In the 1840s, wagon trains traveling along the Oregon-California trail stopped here to stock up on supplies. In 1841, the site was known as Fort John and overlooked the Laramie River.
Eventually, Fort Laramie was founded in 1849 as a military post. The fort was established to protect emigrants who were traveling west from attacks by Native Americans.
One of the ghosts lurking around the fort is the 'Lady in Green'. This ghost dates back to Fort John when it was an American Fur Company trading post. The daughter of the person in charge rode off one day on a big black horse while her father was away. She never returned and whatever happened to her is still a mystery. Supposedly, her ghost appears east of Fort Laramie every 7 years wearing a long, green riding dress and a veiled hat, carrying a jeweled whip while riding her big black stallion.
I hope you guys enjoy the video! Don't forget to Like, Comment and Subscribe!

Slave Canal Kayak and Canoe Adventure: EcoAdventures North Florida
For more information on Slave Canal, visit:
Slave Canal is one of those places I started hearing about a lot when we started doing our EcoAdventure videos. As soon as you get into the braided channels of the lower Wacissa, it's easy to see why it's one of the popular river expeditions in north Florida. You're paddling in a canopied river swamp where people have been paddling for several thousand years. And minus some old growth cypress trees that have been logged in the last century or so, it looks much the same as it did when various native groups made use of the waterway to make seafood runs to the coast. But it doesn't look quite as it did when people first got there.
Evidence excavated at the Page/ Ladson and Ryan/ Harley sites points to people inhabiting what is now the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area for 12,000 years or longer. At that time, Florida Fish and Wildlife's Joe Davis told us, the ice ages were ending, sea level was lower, and the coast was further away. Those first men and women walked on dry land where our canoes and kayaks passed over. I can almost envision paleolithic man standing on one of the many ancient midden mounds as everything happens around him in time-lapse mode. Rivers fill and flow to the Gulf, mastodons vanish, and different cultures come and go, piling shell and bone on to that same mound. Pretty heavy stuff to think about on a fun Florida kayaking trip.
