German debating competition 2019 - finale
The debating competition is a project of the Goethe-Institut London with 16 secondary schools in the United Kingdom.
Since October 2018, British pupils aged between 16 and 17 have been engaging with future challenges.
Sixteen schools, each with a team of 4 pupils from Year 11 and 12, took part in a debating competition organised by the Goethe-Institut London. The teams dealt with current questions about the future of Europe.
On 27th March the final, which was also joined by the general secretary of the Goethe-Institut, Johannes Ebert, took place at the British Council.
Dr Challoner's Grammar School's team and Hampton School's team debated the pros and cons of the thesis:
The subject “Europe” should be introduced in schools.
The debating competition offers students the opportunity to further develop their foreign language and professional skills. Through a specific occasion, they also learn to speak freely in front of others, to overcome inhibitions and thus broaden their personal and social horizons and strengthen their self-esteem. Moreover the competition offers the opportunity to meet German learners from the United Kingdom, exchange ideas and establish longstanding contacts.

Heirlooms. European Stories: Punk
'Heirlooms. European Stories' is the Goethe-Institut's contribution to the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018.
We are collecting European cultural goods: these may be specialties, traditions, phenomena, music genres or architectural styles – provided only that they are related to at least three European countries. This shows that cultural heritage in many parts of Europe is never purely national in origin, but has always been born in exchange.
Punk is produced by the Goethe-Institut London and tells the story of how this movement influenced Britain, Europe and also the whole world
