Information from Big Bear News. KBHR933.com
It all started when William F. Holcomb left Indiana to seek his fortune in the
mining camps of Northern California. Discouraged by his poor luck there, he
drifted southward. While in Los Angeles, he was told a story about a small gold
discovery in the San Bernardino Mountains. So it was in 1859 that Bill Holcomb
came to these hills. And the rest is history.

Updated Information on METZGAR MINE from Youtube User Kyle Z.
George and Charles were in the second generation of miners, having come from Illinois in the 70's. They were born in the 40's and died in 1918 and 1921. Charles' second son was born in a little log cabin in 1887 in Saragossa Spring, a spring Charles discovered and named while digging through a mountain.
I recently learned about this doing ancestry and discovering that two of my great-great-great grandfather's cousin's mined here, and Metzger Mine is named for them. George A. Metzgar and Charles L. Metzgar. Their last name was spelled with an ar, and it was called Moonstone Mine. At some point there must have been some remembrance of the last name of its owner and it took the name Metzger Mine spelled incorrectly. There seems to never be any mention of them in descriptions of the mine/Holcomb Valley.

Mining Camp From The Early 1900's - San Bernardino National Forest
Matt and I headed out on black friday for a quick hike in the local mountains. We went in search of an old mining camp from the 1900's which we were able to find. This old mining camp was mining Marble out of the side of the mountain and supplying LA. It operated from 1901 to 1931. At one point over 1000 people lived in this area.

About Turquoise:
In the American southwest turquoise is almost invariably associated with the weathering products of copper sulfide deposits in or around potassium feldspar bearing porphyritic intrusives.... turquoise is often recovered as a byproduct of large-scale copper mining operations, especially in the United States.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river you need a permit to do that...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie!
This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING!
In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts.
UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college.
Oregon Mining Law:
Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law:
ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, lawful mining operation means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws.
(2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or
(b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation.
(3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]

10g GOLD NUGGET!!! Found in Nevada County
So, this is my first YouTube post.....ever.
I've been detecting for about 3 years now and have found a lot of old and interesting things, none of which I have documented in any way. This is the first time I have had any desire to post anything and I felt this was good enough to start.
I was detecting in the Nevada city area, a spot I've hunted multiple times in the past. I was there for about an hour, then hit a solid 60 on my ATGold. I dug my plug, only about 2 inches, poped it open and graves my pin pointer. Found it was a bit deeper, so I stuck the end of my shovel in and tilled the dirt up a couple time. Probably got maybe 3 inches deeper and all of a sudden GOLD!
It ended up being 11.6g total weight. I figure about 1.6g of quartz (definitely more gold then rock), so probably 10g of gold.
The only other time I've found gold was almost a year ago I found a 5.9g gold specimen stone. I sold it to Utopian Stone in Nevada City. Check it out, it's pretty cool.
Anyway, I hope I find more and I promise, if you like my post, I will post more. The good the bad the ugly the junk. Live digs!
Anybody in the nevada city california area, hit me up, let's do some junk collecting!
Gold Mining Yella Fever G.P.A.A. Claim Pt 1
We dug several test holes down to about 3 to 4 ft and found very little gold! By the Fourth day No one was helping they were so discouraged . I told them the gold was there we just have to find it ! The Fifth Day we hit a rich pay streak and didn't have enough time to finish the hole and i filled it in maybe 1 foot above the bedrock there was a lot of gold! I wished I brought my dredge i could've gotten all of it . So I left some there for the next guy. A lot of it too I bet an ounce or more there in the one hole !
