2011 St. Jude March--Chicago Gold Star Families Observance
Thousands of police officers and supporters gathered near Soldier Field on Sunday May 1, 2011, to take part in the annual St. Jude Memorial March to remember officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Interim Police Supt. Terry Hillard took part in the march along with family members of slain officers. Also in attendance were members of other law enforcement agencies who stood with members of the Chicago Police Department. They marched from the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park on the museum campus and ended on Waldron Drive. The march is meant to remember all fallen officers, especially officers who have died the previous year.
Last year was an especially tragic year for the department. Six Chicago police officers were killed, five in the line of duty, making 2010 the deadliest year since 1984. The officers who died last year are: Michael Flisk, David Blake, Michael Bailey, Thor Soderberg, Thomas Wortham IV and Sgt. Alan Haymaker.

Det. Joseph M. Airhart Jr. Class of 29 NOV 1982
21 OCT 1955 - 03 Nov 2008
Was shot and then held hostage for hours during a FBI/CPD raid of a wanted bank robber's residence.
ORIGINAL BACKGROUND STORY ON THE SHOOTING -
Life in prison for man who shot cop during raid
Daniel Salley, a former tax preparer turned convicted bank robber, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for critically shooting a Chicago police officer and holding him hostage.
In addition to the life sentence, Salley will serve 132 more years on 14 other counts, including the attempted murder of Detective Joe Airhart.
Considering the array of weaponry you possessed, I'm concerned that if you were ever set free, you would hurt people, U.S. District Judge Wayne Andersen told Salley.
The sentence came after an emotional two hour hearing in which Airhart's sisters, brother and former police partner testified about how the shooting has totally incapacitated the highly decorated former detective.
Salley, you've aged us all, said Airhart's younger sister Denise.
On August 28, 2001, Airhart led a joint party of Chicago police officers and FBI agents into a South Loop apartment to arrest Salley, the prime suspect in two successive armed robberies of a South Side bank.
Fleeing into the apartment's back room, Salley shot Airhart in the head, shattering the left side of his skull and penetrating his brain. For the next two hours, Salley used Airhart as leverage with law enforcement, denying him crucial medical aid. Salley eventually surrendered.
Airhart's family and colleagues from the Chicago Police Department packed the 14th-floor courtroom in the Dirksen Federal building, overflowing the jury box in support of Airhart, now on life support. They expressed little emotion as Andersen handed down the sentence.
Although Andersen said he had made up his mind about the sentence well before Thursday's hearing, he listened raptly to testimony and victims' statements from Airhart's family.
The most vivid of these was a video shot just weeks ago which illustrates the starkness of the everyday life of Joe Airhart.
The tape showed a man in a hospital gown lying in a specially padded bed, his legs wrapped in thick white padding and his mouth twitching. The 50-year-old Airhart cannot speak, eat or walk, and relies on a feeding tube and ventilator to keep him alive. The slight movements of Airhart's mouth were actually abnormal, and were later determined to be caused by an infection. Continuing health problems are nothing new for Airhart, whose sisters estimated he has made dozens of visits to the emergency room over the past 5 years, with hospital stays ranging from hours to months.
The homemade video showed where seven different nurses take turns working 12-hour shifts to care for Airhart, before panning over a literal basement-full of medical supplies
Wracked by tears, Denise Airhart described how Joe had shoveled snow for their elderly parents and had been the consummate older brother.
He gave us security, and you took that from us, she said, addressing Salley.
Airhart, a 19-year veteran of the CPD who would have retired last year, loved to travel and had made it his goal to set foot on every continent. Other victims' testimony, including statements from his sister, younger brother, and daughter, recalled Airhart's smile, aspirations, and commitment to family.
As each statement was read, many addressing him by name, Salley made unflinching eye contact with Airhart's family members.
On crutches and wearing an orange jumpsuit, Salley showed little remorse, and claimed an FBI agent had actually shot Joe Airhart.
Disdaining three court-appointed attorneys, Salley represented himself as he had done throughout almost 5 years of legal proceedings. Attorney Richard Kling was allowed to act as his standby attorney, though the two did not consult, and Kling rarely spoke.
In a rambling diatribe that intertwined a government conspiracy against him with empathy for the Airhart family, Salley said he would be content to spend the rest of his life in prison because new evidence would eventually exonerate him.
God knows what happened, and I believe God will miraculously reveal it to us, Salley said.
A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial in 2003, but medical experts eventually ruled Salley was fit.
In 2002, the Chicago Police Department honored Airhart with the Police Medal, the department's highest award.

07/02/10: Governor Pat Quinn Honors Fallen Heroes
CHICAGO -- July 2, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today joined Gold Star Families to unveil the Portrait of a Soldier memorial exhibition at a ceremony held in the James R. Thompson Center.
We must never forget our servicemen and servicewomen who have bravely and selflessly given their lives defending our freedom, said Governor Quinn. I am honored to be joined today by Gold Star Families, and I am humbled by their sacrifice. We remember these sons and daughters, Illinois' true heroes, not just today but every day.
The memorial exhibition, which has been viewed by thousands of people in more than 50 cities and towns throughout Illinois, is a series of hand-drawn portraits of more than 250 Illinois men and women who have died in service to our country since September 11, 2001.
Governor Quinn was joined by more than 20 members of the Illinois National Guard and Gold Star families, including: Sandra Miller, mother of Army PVT DeWayne White of Country Club Hills; Bill and Debbie Wolfe, parents of Marine CPL Anthony Mihalo of Naperville; Kathy Alcozer, mother of Army PVT Christopher Alcozer of Villa Park; and Elie and Sylvia Bitton, parents of Army CPL Albert Bitton of Chicago.
Artist Cameron Shilling of Mattoon drew the first portrait of a soldier in August 2004, after Army Spc. Charles Neeley, also of Mattoon, was killed in Iraq. Schilling gave the sketch to Spc. Neely's parents to convey his sympathy for their loss. In October 2005, while a student at Eastern Illinois University, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of every Illinois servicemember who has fallen during the Global War on Terror.
As the country celebrates its independence on July 4, Governor Quinn is encouraging Illinois residents to pause and recognize the servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives fighting for democracy overseas. The exhibit will be open to the public in the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago on July 2, and again from July 5 - 8 during regular business hours.

Words Fail: People of Conscience Condemn Terrorist Israel's Actions
Written by Cindy Sheehan
Monday, 31 May 2010 10:31
Cindy Sheehan
First and foremost, we mourn the deaths of the 20 humanitarian aid workers that were spinelessly slaughtered by the terrorist state of Israel. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families in this terrible time of senseless loss. We also wish a speedy and complete recovery to the up to 80 people who were wounded by the IDF in this abominable attack in International Waters.
We severely condemn, with the very harshest tone imaginable, the murderous attack conducted upon the innocent unarmed humanitarians of the FREE GAZA 'Freedom Flotilla' within International Waters.
This act demonstrates the overly sociopathic mentality of the Israeli government in its continuing criminal actions committed upon the Palestinian people and upon those coming to their aid. This act was not simply an international criminal act upon the passengers of the humanitarian 'Freedom Flotilla' but was indeed a rabid, viscous and delusional attack on humanity itself.
In conducting an act of this nature Israel has once again demonstrated to the entire world its arrogance in believing it can continue with its predictable path of violent, arrogant and cowardly behavior. Because of Israel's past-unpunished crimes, it believes it can act with impunity in any form no matter how murderous.
Our response to these terrorist acts must be large and sustained. We people of conscious can no longer sit by idly and watch Israel literally get away with murder, time and time again.
Knowing that the U.S. is criminal Israel's biggest funder and cheerleader and knowing how futile it is to get the murderous U.S. Government to ever do the humane thing and condemn Israel; however, in a perfect world this is what we seek:
The Obama administration MUST declare Israel's actions as criminal and must follow through with harsh and long-term penalties. Any other response from the Obama administration will be deemed as being complicit to murder, oppression and terror.
We demand:
1. The immediate expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador from the United States and the withdrawal of the U.S. Ambassador in Tel Aviv.
2. Complete and immediate withholding of any and all funds (including military aid) from the United States to Israel.
3. That the IDF be designated as terrorists and Israel as a terrorist state.
4. Trials in Nuremburg for Benyamin Nethanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman and the IDF troops that participated in the massacre.
5. The end to the siege of Gaza by Israel.
6. An immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
From people of conscience we call for:
1. Large and sustained public protests outside every Israeli Embassy/Consulate in the United States (see addresses below)
2. Increased effort of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Movement ( )
3. Increased efforts to protest the United States' war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.
4. Increased efforts to protest nuclear proliferation, especially by Israel and the U.S., two states that have clearly demonstrated their lack of compassion for innocent peoples.

Governor Quinn Statement on Memorial Day
CHICAGO -- In honor of Memorial Day, Governor Pat Quinn today issued the following statement, recognizing all servicemembers across our state and country:
This Memorial Day I encourage everyone to pause and honor our nation's servicemembers and those who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our freedom.
We owe a debt of gratitude to many brave Illinois men and women who have answered the call to serve. It's important that we take the time to reflect on their sacrifice, which is one we can never repay.
As Abraham Lincoln believed, we all have a duty to take care of those who have borne the battle. As Americans, we also have a duty to support our countless military families.
I join the people of our state and country in recognizing and remembering those who stepped forward in the face of danger to defend our democracy. May they stand forever in our hearts.
After marching in the annual Park Ridge Memorial Day Parade, the Governor will bring Challenger -- a 26-year-old Bald Eagle -- to U.S. Cellular Field. The eagle will be set free to soar over the stadium during the singing of the National Anthem. Over the Memorial Day Weekend, Governor Quinn also unveiled the Portrait of a Soldier memorial exhibit at the O'Hare Oasis and announced the summer exhibit schedule at the Tollway Oases in northern Illinois. The exhibit features a series of hand-drawn portraits of nearly all of the men and women who have died while serving our country since Sept. 11, 2001.
