Vietnamese Water Puppets In Saigon At The Golden Dragon Theater
BRAND NEW!!! Check out my DJI Osmo Pocket Test Footage:
I was so dreading to go to the The Golden Dragon Theater to see the Vietnamese Water Puppets. We've only seen the buses parked outside during the shows! And thought this is a tourist trap.
We showed up 5 minutes before the show started, got to our assigned seats, curtain opened and all the worries were gone.
I absolutely loved it, so creative, clever and fun. Didn't understand a word though, ha ha.
Be advised that the shows sell out sometimes a week in advanced! So get those tickets on your first day you arrive in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre of Saigon
The 1,000 year-old folk art form of water puppetry spins the traditional stories and folk melodies of Vietnam into a lavish, over-the-top spectacle: multi-colored phoenixes and copper turtles, fantastical jumping fish, pirouetting dragons spouting water. The Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre of Saigon perform alongside the 7-member orchestra Rup Tung Cack–the Vietnamese description of drums beating–whose distinct blend of rural and contemporary Vietnam showcases the country’s colorful heritage. Featuring more than 15 different instruments, including gongs, kettle drums, bamboo flutes, zithars, and two-stringed violins, Rup Tung Cack’s arrangements help the puppets come vividly to life in this truly magical show, a rare treat for North American audiences (last seen in Seattle in 2002) and appropriate for all ages.

Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre - Ho Chi Minh City
Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre
At Ho Chi Minh City
Originating in northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta, water puppetry (mua roi nuoc) is now firmly a proud Vietnamese tradition.
Puppets dance on a “stage”, essentially a tank of water. The puppets are manipulated by puppeteers standing waist deep in the water hidden behind a screen. The show depicts every day pastoral scenes—riding a water buffalo, catching frogs, fishing—as well as folktales and humorous anecdotes, all set to live instruments and singing.
Though more famous as a Hanoi attraction, the Golden Water Puppet Theatre is your opportunity to see this traditional art in Ho Chi Minh City. There are two 45-minutes shows a day (17:00 and 18:30) in an air-conditioned theatre, no intermission.
The show is entirely in Vietnamese and although the show’s pamphlet has the name of each set in English, “Dragon Dance” for example, there is no explanation and foreigners most likely won’t understand the nuances of what is happening. So it’s more of a sit back and enjoy the puppets coming to life, marvelling at how the actions can seem so realistic while a team of people make it all happen from behind a curtain.
Is it for everyone? It’s part of Vietnam’s cultural heritage and it’s for those who appreciate live performances and how much training it requires. We are glad we saw it (it doesn’t break the bank either), but now we don’t need to see another water puppet show any time soon. And the experience isn’t without frustration. Unfortunately we sat behind someone who spent the entire time recording the performance rather than enjoy watching it live. There were several people in the audience doing so

The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered. The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play.
Modern water puppetry is performed in a pool of water 4 meters square with the water surface being the stage. Performance today occurs on one of three venues—on traditional ponds in villages where a staging area has been set up, on portable tanks built for traveling performers, or in a specialized building where a pool stage has been constructed[4].
Up to 8 puppeteers stand behind a split-bamboo screen, decorated to resemble a temple facade, and control the puppets using long bamboo rods and string mechanism hidden beneath the water surface. The puppets are carved out of wood and often weigh up to 15 kg.
A traditional Vietnamese orchestra provides background music accompaniment. The instrumentation includes vocals, drums, wooden bells, cymbals, horns, Đàn bầu (monochord), gongs, and bamboo flutes. The bamboo flute's clear, simple notes may accompany royalty while the drums and cymbals may loudly announce a fire-breathing dragon's entrance.[5]
Singers of chèo (a form of opera originating in north Vietnam) sing songs which tell the story being acted out by the puppets. The musicians and the puppets interact during performance; the musicians may yell a word of warning to a puppet in danger or a word of encouragement to a puppet in need.
The puppets enter from either side of the stage, or emerge from the murky depths of the water.
Spotlights and colorful flags adorn the stage and create a festive atmosphere.

Water Puppet Show in Hanoi Vietnam (Thang Long Water Puppet Theater)
The world-famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi has its roots in an art form that dates back to the 11th century. The tradition of water puppet theatre stems from a time when rice paddy fields were flooded and villagers would make entertainment by standing in the waist-deep water with the puppets performing over the water. Using large rods to support the puppets it appeared as if they were moving across the water with the puppeteers hidden behind a screen.
