By train across Sri Lanka | DW Documentary
Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire.
In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called Main Line. The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia.
Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

Colombo viharamahadevi park
The Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) is a public park located in Colombo, next to the National Museum in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest and largest park of the Port of Colombo. Situated in front of the colonial-era Town Hall building, the park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu. The park was built on land donated to the Colombo city by Charles Henry de Soysa during the British rule of Sri Lanka, and used to be named Victoria Park after Queen Victoria. During World War II it was occupied by the British Army with Australian 17th Brigade based at Victoria Park. After the war the park was restored and open to the public in 1951.
There used to be a cricket ground in the park, which was used for first-class cricket between 1927 and 1995. Ceylon played against a touring English team there in 1927 and against an Australian team in 1935.
Viharamahadevi Park
The park features include a huge Buddha statue and a series of water fountains. It also includes a mini zoo, a children's play area and a BAC Jet Provost.
The Viharamahadevi Park is the only large-scale public park in Colombo, and is maintained by the Colombo Municipal Council. Located at its western end is the Cenotaph War Memorial, Colombo and the Colombo Public Library. The Vihara Maha Devi Park Open Air Stadium is a venue for concerts and public events

Sigiriya (Ravana's Palace) - Incredible Ancient Technology Found in Sri Lanka?
Instagram................
Twitter......................
Facebook..............
Website....................
Hey guys, today we are going to look at a marvelous place in Sri Lanka, this place is known as Sigiriya. There is nothing like this anywhere in the world, which is why it is known as the 8th wonder of the world. This is actually a giant monolithic rock, about 660 feet tall, and you can see that it has a flat top, like somebody cut it with a giant knife. There are incredible ruins at the top which are extremely mysterious, so let us go straight to the top and see what's up there.
As you can see there are a lot of strange brick structures here and there and it is not only confusing for visitors, but even archeologists are not able to make complete sense of what these structures were used for. They confirm that everything you see is at least 1500 years old. But the mystery is not what these structures are, it is how these structures were built. How did ancient builders manage to move all these bricks to the top of the rock? It is reported that at least 3 million bricks are found here, but it would be impossible to make these bricks on top of the rock, there is not enough clay available here. They would have to have transported these bricks from the ground.
Now, the really bizarre part is that there are no ancient stairs from the ground level which go to the top of the rock. Look, all these metal steps were built in the last century. Without these new stairs, it will be very hard to climb this rock. This whole rock is now set up with different types of stairs, this is the spiral stairs at a different level. The ancient builders built very limited stairs, but these stairs definitely did not reach the top. This is exactly why no one, not even the locals knew about Sigiriya until 200 years ago, because there were no stairs to the top. And this is why an Englishman by the name of Jonathan Forbes Discovered the ruins of Sigiriya in 1831.
So how did early human beings get to the top of Sigiriya? Let us assume that it is possible to hike up hill through these very steep, wooded areas. But to bring 3 million bricks from the ground level, you will definitely need proper stairs. Without this, it would be impossible to transport them to the top.
Even if we claim that the bricks were made on top of the rock itself by some miraculous means, The construction work here would have needed hundreds of workers. How did they get their food? Look around, there are no fruit bearing trees or crops growing here, to feed anyone. And what about tools? How did they carry their massive primitive tools? Where did they rest and sleep? But it gets more baffling. Look carefully, there are not only bricks here, but look at these blocks. This is marble.
The milky white marble stones are not native to this area at all. These blocks are actually very heavy, every stone which makes up a step weighs about 50 pounds. And we can find thousands of these marble blocks here. Experts agree that Marble is not naturally found anywhere nearby, so how were they transported up to a height of 660 feet, especially without stairs to climb ?
But it is not the bricks or the marble that really baffles me. It is the granite. Look at this large water tank. If you ignore the bricks and marble blocks around it, you understand that this is the largest monolithic tank in the world. It has not been built by adding stone blocks, it has been created by removing granite, by scooping out tons and tons of granite from Solid Rock. And exactly how many tons of rocks have been removed? This entire tank is 90 feet long and 68 feet wide and is about 7 feet deep. This means that at least 3,500 tons of granite have been removed. So you can take a minute to really sit back and think if mainstream archeologists are right. If human beings were using primitive tools like chisels, hammers and pick axes on granite, which is one of the hardest rocks in the world, removing 3,500 tons would have taken years. And how did these workers feed themselves during all these years, if they don't even have stairs to go to the ground level? There is something fundamentally wrong with mainstream history books which talk about ancient people cutting rocks with chisels and hammers. But this is not just a theory, we have actual evidence in front of our eyes. Look here, we don't see individual chisel marks, we see long, snake like, winding tool marks which are continuous. This is not how primitive chiseling and wedge marks look.

Welcome to Sri Lanka!
This island off the coast of India has long been on my bucket-list for loads of reasons, like having the best safari outside of Africa, boasting eight UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore, and lots of lovely, gorgeous beaches complete with idyllic white sand and crystal clear water that's perfect for surfing.
In fact, for an island about a ¼ of the size of the UK, there's loads to see and do, depending, of course, on what you want out of your trip.
Coming up, I'm going to tell you about getting here, some tips on transport, then some stuff on food, money and language and some awesome places to visit.
So, let's get on with it…
We flew 10 hours direct from Heathrow to Colombo, which is Sri Lanka’s capital city. Flights arrive at Bandaranaike International airport, which is 30km north of the city.
Taxis are very cheap in Sri Lanka, and this can be the easiest, and certainly quickest way to reach your destination from the airport. If you’re heading straight into Colombo you can catch the express bus which takes about 25 minutes, but to be honest the taxis are so cheap it’s a no-brainer.
To enter the country, you’re gonna need a visa. Now this can be done when you get here, but, after ten hours in the air ..why bother with the extra admin!?
Get it done before you leave. Applications cost $35 and take around 24 hours to process.
Also, you’re gonna need to make sure that your vaccinations are up to date, like your tetanus and typhoid. Check with your GP beforehand.
What do you need to know about public transport in Sri Lanka? Well, in all honesty, quite a bit…
Public transport conditions aren't great, but are popular with locals as it's very cheap.
Buses tend to leave when they’re full, so for anyone on a schedule we’d give them a miss.
Also, trains are often slower and less efficient than simply getting a taxi.
My advice: take anything described as luxury or express with a generous pinch of salt.
The key thing in Sri Lanka is that your money goes a long way, for example our two-hour taxi from Colombo to Unawatuna cost 9000 rupees, which is about 40 quid, so for this reason we made the most of getting around with private car hire and tuk-tuks.
Hiring a driver to chauffeur you around is surprisingly affordable and, let's face it, way more luxurious! It's also a big timesaver which is a massive a bonus.
The roads are in surprisingly good condition...
...just watch out for the tourists, the cyclists, the buffalo, stray dogs, and massive lizards they all make it a little hair-raising at times.
We used Uber to navigate Colombo and Red Cabs for everywhere else.
Failing that you could always haggle for a tuk tuk, which are ideal for quick journeys. There are a couple of things you need to know before you start off. Number 1 always agree the price before settings off and number 2 be direct about where you want to go, don’t settle for any detours or any other places they might want to take you.
Anyway, up next, here are some of my favourite things to do in Sri Lanka.
Unawatuna is loved by locals and tourists alike, and with palm trees, white sands and blue waters, it's easy to see why it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beaches.
Right behind the beach is a small shopping strip for souvenirs and restaurants...
… And Ladies, going topless on the beach is a definite no-no, and if you're a couple, make the P in PDA stand for PRIVATE, not PUBLIC.
OK, Newsflash!!! Sri Lanka has the best safari outside of Africa since the country has one of the highest rates of indigenous plants and animals in the world. Udawalawe National Park is a personal highlight of mine and home to some 200 different species.
Traveling In Sri Lanka For The First time - Part 1
#SriLanka#Travel#vlog
Hey Guys
So I visited Sri Lanka in June 2019 and have finally managed to edit and upload some of my Vlog. I wasn’t able to squeeze all my travels in the one video therefore will be uploading this vlog in about 3 parts as we stayed for 13 nights and initially it was just supposed to be just a beach holiday but Sri Lanka had so much to offer and we managed to travel quite a bit.
A bit of information for you all if your planning to travel Sri Lanka then you have to apply for a Visa this can be done online look for a valid site. The visa is valid for 30 days and ensure when you complete the visa information that everything matches and double check for any mis matches, as this can complicate things at arrival. Hence, we had a minor error on my visa and this added extra time to get through security! Also, its mandatory that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date to Sri Lanka.
The airline we travelled was Sri Lankan Air lines and must say the service on the plane was good and enjoyed the food. However, be prepared for a long journey especially if you’re traveling from the UK.
Whilst traveling my skin always dry’s out so if your like me then keep your makeup to a minimum carry a travel moisturiser and do wear warm clothes as planes are so cold.
Sri Lanka is generally hot all year around but in certain areas it’s a bit cooler so when you decide to go look at the destination you want to stay and book according to the weather forecast.
Hope you enjoy Part 1 of my vlog and I can wait to share the rest of my travels with you as Sri Lanka is a very beautiful country and has so much to offer.
