Gonarezhou: An epic weekend! - Part 1/2
Tag along as we travel to the northern parts of Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe. En route we overnight at the iconic Lion & Elephant Motel and experience our first spectacular sunset in the park.

Due to tremendous summer rain Dec. 2008), the park was actually closed, but we were able to talk the guard into letting us in since we weren't going to any of the low-lying areas. Even so, it was amazing how much water was on our path. We had to wench out twice and there were large cat tracks all around us! Fun times!

In next, the 3rd episode we trapped in the Save River on the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border to safari in the Gonarezhou National Park . With a ranger Thomas do some aerial shots (from my RC multi-rotor Phantom) of this amazing game reserve, where we lived three days in Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge.

We travel from Gonarezhou National Park (in the south of Zimbabwe) to Lake Kyle Recreational Park (close to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins). Along the way we stop off and restock in Chiredzi and encounter a very angry cow. We also do an MTV style house tour of our accommodation at Sikato Bay.
Definitely try Sparletta Cherry Plum when you visit Zimbabwe - and let us know why this is not available in South Africa.

You might notice we did not include it in the villa tour because it was locked but I kept imagining there was something hiding inside. ????????????

Patience Zisadza on doing general ecological monitoring in the protected area where she works. She encounters an elephant carcass near Fishans area in Gonarezhou National Park. Even though the park has a balooming population of elephants-it's always heartbreaking to see cases if illegal killing of elephants by poachers. Law-enforcement is one of the major activities in protected areas of Zimbabwe. This particular carcass had 2 bullet wounds

And we are off! In this episode we drive 828km from Johannesburg, South Africa to Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, stopping for one night in Chiredzi along the way.
Road conditions:
The road on the South African side of the border is fantastic - two lanes in each direction pretty much all the way with a shoulder. Once we crossed into Zimbabwe the road conditions were not so great - with lots of potholes - though not too difficult to negotiate. Keep an eye on the speed limit though as it is often 80km/h around small towns.
Border crossing:
We crossed the border at Beitbridge and would not recommend this very big border post. We were immediately overwhelmed by helpful assistants fighting for our attention. Two hours and a bit of friendly banter later we emerged on the Zim side of the border.

Police road blocks:
We arrived in Zimbabwe at the end of October - i.e. before the coup-that-was-not-a-coup during which the president, Robert Mugabe was forced to resign. Prior to his resignation, the roads around small towns were full of police road blocks. After he resigned it was a completely different story and an absolute pleasure on the roads. We hope that this has remained the case.
Chiredzi:
We did not quite make it all the way to our camp site on the first day and stopped over in the closest town to Gonarezhou - being Chiredzi. This is a great stop before heading into the park where you can refuel and restock. It is also a great place to get a sim card if this is your first stop in Zimbabwe (though there is no service in the park really).
Nesbit Arms:
We stayed at Nesbit Arms Hotel on our first night. It is a basic hotel which was certainly much much nicer in its hay-day but definitely not maintained/ renovated in the last 20 years. It was not amazing but not terrible - good enough for a single night stay on the way in or out.
