SUMMARY
=======
The display of flags used by and associated with the Confederate States of America (1861–1865) has continued, with a long interruption, into the present day, with the Southern cross used in the battle flag of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia gaining the most popular recognition as a modern symbol of the Confederacy, and by extension, the Southern United States in general. Such displays have been made for a variety of reasons, with Southern heritage, states' rights, and historical commemoration among the stated reasons for particular uses. Displaying the flag has long been controversial in the United States, due to the flag's longstanding associations with racism, slavery, segregation, white supremacy, and treason. Many Southerners associate the Confederate battle flag with pride in their heritage and traditions, but for most outsiders it is impossible to separate the flag from its association with the defense of slavery and racial bias.
Despite the common belief that the Confederate flag has remained in uninterrupted use since the end of the American Civil War, its use was mostly limited to historical films, like Gone with the Wind (1939). Its revival in the 1950s and 1960s came about because of the American Civil War Centennial, but was also used to show opposition to the
Civil Rights Movement, starting with Senator Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrats in 1948. Racism played a major role in its renewed popularity.
The Value of the Enslaved from Womb to Grave
Daina Ramey Berry gives a lecture entitled The Price for Their Pound of Flesh: The Value of the Enslaved from Womb to Grave. From the moment of birth and before, those invested in buying and selling human beings put a price tag on enslaved people. This fiscal marker served as a projection of future worth as well as a monetary value of a market price. Regardless of what the figure meant, enslaved people created their own system of valuation that neither the auctioneer nor enslaver could control. Exploring enslaved people's inner spirits expressed in plantation records, newspapers, testimonies, and letters brings us to an entirely different system of values developed and determined by the enslaved for the survival of their souls.
Speaker Biography: Daina Ramey Berry is an associate professor of history and African diaspora studies and the Oliver H. Radkey Fellow in American History at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ken Burns & Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in conversation with Michel Martin
Documentarian Ken Burns and scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., join together to discuss the prevailing political fault line in the US: race. In this illuminating and cogent exchange, they examine why race is critical to their understanding of America and their work—and how, as a nation, we deal with race today. Their discussion is complemented with clips from Jackie Robinson, Burns' forthcoming epic about the impact and legacy of the first black baseball player to play in the major leagues, and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, Gates' chronicle of the civil rights movement culminating in the election of Obama. (Both films are scheduled to premiere on PBS in 2016.)
Both figures have explored how race is part of the American fabric in their work. Burns’ landmark Emmy Award-winning television series The Civil War and Gates’ unprecedented four-part series African American Lives explore not just the role African-Americans have played throughout our history, but also how race, conceptions of race, and ideas about freedom and independence influence our politics and policies. They trace the historical significance of race from abolitionism to civil rights to the war on poverty—and consider what it means to have an African-American president.
An Address by Newt Gingrich
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke in Gaston Hall March 29 at the request of the student-run Lecture Fund, which has invited all of the Republican candidates and President Obama to speak on campus. Gingrich called his policy address Giving Young Americans the Right to Choose a Personal Social Security Account.
How Does The Civil War Qualify as the First Modern War?
For 5,800 years of recorded history, wars were fought with pre-modern forms of transportation ad communication, where the world was powered by windmills, watermills, literal horse power and human muscle. However, this all changed with the invention of the steam engine and its implementation in the 19th century. In fifty short years, macadamized roads, canals, steam trains, steam boats, steam presses and telegraph communication revolutionized the transfer of energy and power. By the 1850s, every aspect of western civilization looked and functioned differently than it had for thousands of years. It was in this milieu the Civil War was fought. What did the first modern war look like and how did it differ from previous wars? How did wartime observations by foreign emissaries alter the course of future wars?
