Sameera tells us about his life in Sri Lanka, Weligama. Surfing is relatively new to the Island; these kids are the first generation to be 'born' into the surf culture. A short film made over the course of one month in collaboration with @laybackweligama.

In all my years of making videos, I have always struggled to find purpose. I've mostly just focused on 'what' I am shooting, and not 'why I am shooting it'. This video is the perhaps my first one that began with 'why'. This idea has been pushed by many filmmakers, but perhaps the most by Dan Mace. This is my first attempt at putting a story first - it was a journey to say the least. After arriving in Sri Lanka, my amazing hosts at Layback Weligama, told me about a few kids who hang around the streets. Soon we met; they were all fascinated by the camera gear I had, especially Sameera. We decided that we wanted to give an insight into the lives of these young kids, through their perspective. Although a very simple life, these kids were always smiling, something many of us can learn from. The following month of shooting was a challenge, with sooo many things that went wrong. Gopro failure, wave conditions and more. Ultimately however, we were able to come up with something I am really happy with. Sameera was always so stoked to film, making my life a lot easier! Translation was also an interesting process but I think it came out well! Matt, another traveller I met allowed me to use his drone over the course of about a week! I can never thank him enough! Super super lucky to have access to a drone, it definitely helped bring the video together. Thanks Matt!! A massive thank you to Layback for hosting me and making this whole thing possible, truly grateful for everything :D Thanks Thilina, Linda and Saman! To everyone else, thank you! Surf lesson at best surf school in Weligama: Lucky's surf school
Weligama bay in South Sri Lanka is the most famous beach for beginners. It has a mellow, gentle wave and sand (no reef!). I learned to surf here when I was a beginner and still love this place, such a friendly wave!
There's many surf schools at the beach where you can take a lesson with local instructor. However most of the teaching. will be about how to get up on a board and pushing you into white wash. Beware! And if you really want to learn to surf, visit Lucky's surf school: Lucky is the top national surfer and a great instructor too. Lessons with him are easy, safe and fun!

SURFEN IN WELIGAMA ???????? SRI LANKA VLOG
Weligama gilt als Mekka für alle die gerade erst mit dem Surfen angefangen haben (oder es wie wir erst noch lernen wollen). Der Strand ist flach und sandig, die Wellen kommen regelmässig und in (für Anfänger) perfekter Grösse. Dazu die fast schon kitschige Stimmung im Sonnenuntergang..
Kurz das Surffieber hat uns in Weligama schnell gepackt, so dass wir gleich noch 3 weitere Tage angehängt haben. Jeden Tag wagen wir uns ein Mal in den frühen Morgenstunden und ein weiteres Mal am Abend ins Wasser und üben so Lange bis wir uns langsam aber sicher so wirklich wohl fühlen auf dem Brett. ???? ???? ????????
