Daniel and I went out into the hills to search for the Gooseberry Hill rock pool, unfortunately all the water was gone but we still managed to find the dam and we had a swim there instead.

Took the Scenic way down the hill on the way home this time. Some really pretty spots to park up and watch a nice Sunset.

would have flown further and higher but when i took off i noticed the TX had only 1 bar of battery life showing from the AAA batteries, so didnt want to go too far out. Will definitely come back here for another flight soon

Driving my Subaru up to a road that was once a zig zag railway in the Perth hills.
Statham's Quarry
An old quarry in Perth's hills serviced by a zig zag railway.
People had cut and milled timber in Perth's hills from early on, the wooden stakes in the Canning River were placed there to assist the floatation of barges carrying such timber to the colony until pressure saw a line built from Midland to Kalamunda and beyond.
The Kalamunda Zig Zag was completed in July 1891, as part of the Upper Darling Range Railway line in Western Australia which was built by the Canning Jarrah Timber Company from a junction with the Midland line at Midland Junction to Canning Mills to transport railway sleepers to Perth's growing railway system. On 1 July 1903, the line was taken over by the Western Australian Government Railways.
To overcome a steep gradient up the Darling Scarp, a zig zag was built between Ridge Hill and Gooseberry Hill stations, being cheaper to build than a continuous gradient line.
Statham's Quarry was established by Thomas Statham and William Burton in 1894 3 years after a railway opened nearby until Statham's death in 1920.
The Perth City Council operated the quarry following Statham's death and material from the quarry was used as street paving in Perth during the early 1900s. The rocks for the groyne at City Beach also came from the quarry
The quarry was serviced by the Kalamunda Zig Zag section of the Upper Darling Range Railway during the time of its operation (which closed in 1949), and was finally put out of operation by a bushfire in 1957.
Statham's Quarry is still there for walks or bike riding in Gooseberry Hill as is a one way road from the top following the original zig zag railway.
