Russia - Nizhny elections
T/I: 10:24:29
Nizhny Novgorod, once the closed Soviet city of Gorky and now an industrial powerhouse held up in the West as a hotbed of reform, goes to the polls on Sunday (27/9). Elections for the key post of city mayor will be the first indication of how Russia's economic crisis has affected the political map.

Travel Russia-Novgorod Kremlin
The Kremlin, or DETINETS as it was called in ancient time, is the hart of the city. Through centuries, it has been the religious, political and cultural centre of Novgorod land. Being first mentioned in the CHRONICLES in 1044, it remained one of the most important stone fortresses in the north-west of Russia till 1721. Today it is a monument of defence architecture of the late 15th-16th CC. The Kremlin in occupies 12.1 hectares, its walls are 1487 meters long.
Nizhny Novgorod
Russia's fifth-largest city – sometimes referred to as the country's 'third capital' – would likely go unnoticed by most travellers if not for its arresting hilltop kremlin, overlooking the confluence of two wide rivers: the Volga and Oka. This is the locale where merchant Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky (men commemorated in a monument in front of Moscow's St Basil’s Cathedral) rallied a popular army to repel the Polish intervention in 1612. It's also the city (then known as 'Gorky') where late Soviet scientist-dissident Andrei Sakharov was banished in the 1980s as punishment for opposing the Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan.
Life of Maxim Gorky | Facts About Maxim Gorky | Father Of Soviet Literature
#MaximGorky #MaximGorkyslife #GoekySovietwriter
Maxim Gorky rose from poverty to become one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century, the father of Soviet literature and the heir to Tolstoy…he wrote of the cruelty and insanity of Tsarism, and his struggle to survive his brutal childhood turned him into a revolutionary…He wrote of Russia’s poor and oppressed its factory workers, peasants and social outcasts, the rejects of capitalism, “people who were once human”.
Gorky is regarded as the founder of Socialist Realism, which was embraced by art, music and dance as well as literature
Gorky was regarded as a hero because of his working-class authenticism.
In 1891 Gorky moved to Tiflis where he found employment as a painter in a railway yard. The following year his first short-story, Makar Chudra, appeared in the Tiflis newspaper
Although Gorky spent 18 years abroad, including 15 years in Italy, he never mastered any foreign language.
Gorky was the most published Soviet writer in his homeland: the total circulation of his books exceeded nearly 242.5 million copies in almost 70 years.
Gorky until his old age believed that he was born in 1869, while the archives did not find documents that dated his birth in 1868.
In 1902 Gorky became an honorary academician, but the emperor was annoyed with this fact, and very soon his election was abolished by the authorities.
Gorky was nominated for the Noble Prize in Literature five times between 1918 and 1933 but never won the prestigious award.
Gorky was taught to read by a cook he met and became an extreme autodidact in the literature of Russian and in anti-Czarist political writings.
Hours after Gorky’s death, his brain was surgically removed by doctors and placed at the Neurological Institute in Moscow.
Gorky Park & View from Observation Deck, Garden of Fallen Monuments in Moscow, Russia
Thanks for joining in on another video from our trip to Moscow! This video is a compilation of clips from the second day of our trip - first we start at Gorky Park, named after Maxim Gorky and a large, pretty park right in central Moscow at the Park Kultury Metro stop. Right at the entry gate there is a museum, at the top of which is a large observation deck area - this deck has nice views and is hardly ever crowded either!
After views from the top, we head across the street - more specifically, under the street since Moscow is known for all their road underpasses! The large building there is the New Tretyakov Gallery, a modern Russian art museum which is in a large yet not overly striking building - in the park area facing away from the river is the Garden of Fallen Monuments, an area of Soviet statues, propaganda and other memorabilia from a bygone era. Here you see busts of Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky and many other Soviet figures - these were all around the city and after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 were torn down as a sign of rebellion and victory. Many of these now reside in this park - it is an amazing thing to see!
One last thing - ever seen the 007 movie Goldeneye? Well, the scene where Bond finds out Alec Trevelyan is still alive and is the enemy Janus is set in this same garden...interestingly, that scene was set in St. Petersburg, NOT in Moscow where the park actually resides!
Enjoy the video!

The Volga River is the largest river in Europe flowing in western Russia and is called the Mother Volga River. And on this huge river is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The Kremlin, which stands for medieval Russian fortifications and fortresses, can be found anywhere in Russia's big cities. With a total of 13 towers and 2 km of walls, the history of the Kremlin dates back to the early 13th century. The Kremlin, which was originally a wooden tower and rebuilt with bricks in the early 16th century, is still greatly loved. The Kremlin is the center of our city, a resort and a historic place. I can show children how history was created and created. So here is always good energy. I'm glad that people with good heart are coming. I went inside to get a closer look at the Kremlin. The Kremlin, which was used as a fighter plane as well as the city government offices, remains intact inside. In particular, there is a huge wall painting made by photographs of Russian veterans who were sacrificed in World War II. A devastating World War II that spawned some 50 million victims worldwide. More than half of them, about 29 million deaths, came from Russia, so you can see how sacrificial they were. Every big city with a population of 500,000 or more lives in Russia, celebrating the sacrifice of those who were victims of the war. Almost everyone lost their family. Somebody lost a father, someone lost a child, and a husband lost. It is really good for young people to remember the war without forgetting it. Do not forget. They gave their lives for our country.

Original titel: Mother Russia
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. SUMMARY
=======
Alexei Maximovich Peshkov (Russian: Алексе́й Макси́мович Пешко́в or Пе́шков; 28 March [O.S. 16 March] 1868 – 18 June 1936), primarily known as Maxim (Maksim) Gorky (Russian: Макси́м Го́рький), was a Russian and Soviet writer, a founder of the socialist realism literary method and a political activist. He was also a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Around fifteen years before success as a writer, he frequently changed jobs and roamed across the Russian Empire; these experiences would later influence his writing. Gorky's most famous works were The Lower Depths (1902), Twenty-six Men and a Girl, The Song of the Stormy Petrel, My Childhood, Mother, Summerfolk and Children of the Sun. He had an association with fellow Russian writers Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov; Gorky would later mention them in his memoirs.
Gorky was active with the emerging Marxist social-democratic movement. He publicly opposed the Tsarist regime, and for a time closely associated himself with Vladimir Lenin and Alexander Bogdanov's Bolshevik wing of the party, but later became a bitter critic of Lenin as an overly ambitious, cruel and power-hungry potentate who tolerated no challenge to his authority. For a significant part of his life, he was exiled from Russia and later the Soviet Union. In 1932, he returned to USSR on Joseph Stalin's personal invitation and died there in June 1936.
