The Yusupov Palace on the Moika River in St. Petersburg is one of two St. Petersburg residences surviving in the city...The land on which the palace stands, in the south of the historic centre close to the Mariinsky Theatre, was originally the site of a wooden palace belonging to Tsarevna Praskovia Ivanovna, niece of Peter the Great. In the mid-18th century it was bought by Count Peter Shuvalov. In 1770, his heir Andrei Shuvalov commissioned the French architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe, designer of the Small Hermitage, Gostiny Dvor and the Academy of Sciences, to build a new palace on the site....
In 1830, the palace was purchased by Prince Nikolay Borisovich Yusupov, and it remained in the ownership of the family until seized by the Bolsheviks in 1917. The palace, nowadays is remembered chiefly for its association with the murder of Rasputin in 1916....
After the October Revolution, the palace was handed to the educational authorities, which fortunately opted to preserve many of the original interiors and used the building as a type of clubhouse for the city's teachers.

Osip Startsev
Osip Dmitrievich Startsev was a Russian architect who mastered both Muscovite Baroque and Ukrainian Baroque idioms during the early part of Peter the Great's reign. His father Dmitry Startsev was the architect responsible for the completion of the Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor in the 1680s.
As a young man, Ossip took part in the rebuilding campaigns in the Moscow Kremlin and redesigned several prikazy offices. It was Startsev who gave the Palace of Facets its familiar wide windows and built the 11-domed roof and cornice over the Terem Palace churches. His major buildings include the civic buildings in Moscow and the archaic-looking Baroque cathedrals in Kiev. In the early 18th century Peter the Great sent him to design the fortress towns of Azov and Taganrog. He was also active in the reconstruction of Smolensk.
In 1714, Tsar Peter demanded stones already quarried to be brought from all parts of Russia to St. Petersburg, forbidding any building with stone outside the new capital under pain of punishment. Startsev is supposed to have resented the decision and taken monastic vows. His last work was the backward-looking Bolvanovka Church in Taganka District of Moscow.

Russia: Romanov nationalist march snuffed out by police
Nationalists rallied in St. Petersburg on Sunday, as security services detained 24 people. The rally was initially authorised until it became an unauthorised march, which prompted police intervention.
About 200 people initially gathered in the Field of Mars. They were later joined by a group of about 50 people, mostly young men, chanting slogans and moving to the top of the Nevsky Prospekt. Later they were seized by police near the Great Gostiny Dvor shopping centre.
A Day of Anger was planned in the wake of rioting following the murder of a Russian national. Russian police announced the arrest of an Azerbaijani man Tuesday in connection with the killing. Over a thousand undocumented migrants were also arrested following the incident.

The Saint Petersburg Metro (Russian: Петербу́ргский метрополитен) is the underground railway system in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, Russia. It has been open since November 15, 1955. Formerly known as the V.I. Lenin Order of Lenin Leningrad Metropoliten (Russian: Ленинградский Ордена Ленина Метрополитен имени В.И. Ленина), the system exhibits many typical Soviet designs and features exquisite decorations and artwork making it one of the most attractive and elegant metros in the world. Due to the city's unique geology, the Saint Petersburg Metro is one of the deepest metro systems in the world and the deepest by the average depth of all the stations. The system's deepest station, Admiralteyskaya, is 86 metres below ground. Serving 2.15 million passengers daily, it is also the 16th busiest metro system in the world.
