Wall Street is an eight-block-long street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Anchored by Wall Street, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
In the Public Imagination
Wall Street in a conceptual sense represents financial and economic power. To Americans, it can sometimes represent elitism and power politics. Wall Street has become synonymous with financial interests, often used negatively. In addition, images of Wall Street and its figures have loomed large. The 1987 Oliver Stone film Wall Street created the iconic figure of Gordon Gekko who used the phrase greed is good, which caught on in the cultural parlance.
Over time, the term has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry (even if financial firms are not physically located there), or New York–based financial interests.
Anchored by Wall Street, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Several other major exchanges have or had headquarters in the Wall Street area, including the New York Mercantile Exchange, the New York Board of Trade, and the former American Stock Exchange.
The seven largest Wall Street firms in the 2000s were Bear Stearns, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup Incorporated, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers.
Importance In the New York Economy
Estimates vary about the number and quality of financial jobs in the city. The city's securities industry, enumerating 163,400 jobs in August 2013, continues to form the largest segment of the city's financial sector and an important economic engine, accounting in 2012 for 5 percent of private sector jobs in New York City, 8.5 percent (US$3.8 billion) of the city's tax revenue, and 22 percent of the city's total wages, including an average salary of US$360,700.
One estimate was that Wall Street firms employed close to 200,000 persons in 2008. Another estimate was that in 2007, the financial services industry which had a $70 billion profit became 22 percent of the city's revenue. Another estimate (in 2006) was that the financial services industry makes up 9% of the city's work force and 31% of the tax base.
Tourism
Wall Street is a major location of tourism in New York City. One report described lower Manhattan as swarming with camera-carrying tourists. Tour guides highlight places such as Trinity Church, the Federal Reserve gold vaults 80 feet below street level (worth $100 billion), and the NYSE.
In Popular Culture
The film Wall Street (1987) and its sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) exemplify many popular conceptions of Wall Street as a center of shady corporate dealings and insider trading.
In the Star Trek universe, the Ferengi are said to make regular pilgrimages to Wall Street, which they worship as a holy site of commerce and business.
In the film The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Bane attacks the Gotham City Stock Exchange. Scenes were filmed in and around the New York Stock Exchange, with the J.P. Morgan Building at Wall Street and Broad Street standing in for the Exchange.
The film The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) is a black comedy about Jordan Belfort, a New York stockbroker who ran Stratton Oakmont, a firm that engaged in securities fraud and corruption on Wall Street from 1987 to 1998.

New York City 4K - Diamond District - Midtown Manhattan - Driving Downtown - USA
Averaging $400 million a day in diamonds sold, the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan is one of the primary centers of the global diamond industry. An estimated 90% of diamonds in the United States enter through New York. There are 2,600 independent businesses located in the district, nearly all of them dealing in diamonds or jewelry. The area is one of the primary centers of the global diamond industry, as well as the premier center for jewelry shopping in the city. It is one of the largest diamond and jewelry districts in the United States, along with Jewelers' Row, Philadelphia and Los Angeles's Jewelry District, and it is the second oldest surviving jewelry district in the United States after Jewelers' Row in Philadelphia. Most are located in booths at one of the 25 exchanges in the district, and in a public corridor to 46th Street. Commission based hawkers are also a common sight and they usually solicit business for stores located on the street level.
47th Street
47th Street is an east–west running street between First Avenue and the West Side Highway in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Traffic runs one way along the street, from east to west, starting at the headquarters of the United Nations. The street features the Diamond District in a single block (where the street is also known as Diamond Jewelry Way) and also courses through Times Square.
Diamond District
The Diamond District is between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The district was created when dealers moved north from an earlier district near Canal Street and the Bowery that was created in the 1920s, and from a second district located in the Financial District, near the intersection of Fulton and Nassau Streets, which started in 1931, and also at Maiden Lane, which had existed since the 18th century. A notable, long-time anomaly of the district was the famous Gotham Book Mart, a bookstore, which was located at 41 West 47th Street from 1946 to 2004.
The move uptown started in 1941. Another factor in the northward move was the co-location of finance and insurance companies who moved into the downtown districts, causing rents to drastically increase. By 1941, the Diamond Dealers Club—an exclusive club that acts as a de facto diamond exchange and has its own synagogue—officially made the move up to midtown as well.
Many deals are finalized by a simple, traditional blessing (mazel und brucha, which means luck and blessing) and handshake. Retailers with shops line the streets outside. At 50 West 47th Street is the Gemological Institute of America which trains gem dealers. One distinguishing figure of the district is the diamond-motif street lights illuminating the corners. The NYC Diamond District also holds three prominent trade interconnected buildings: the 580 Fifth Avenue Exchange, the DDC, Diamond Dealers Club, and the International Gem Tower. It is also steps from other landmarks such as Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall.
In Popular Culture
Seen in the John Schlesinger film Marathon Man (1976) with Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman.
Seen in the closing scene of the Mike Nichols film Closer (2004), starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law.
The 47th Street Diamond Exchange was featured in the 2009 film New York, I Love You in a segment with Natalie Portman and Irrfan Khan.
Memories on 47th St. is the second song on Vic Mensa's studio album The Autobiography (2017).
The City of New York, often called New York City (NYC) or simply New York (NY), is the most populous city in the United States. With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass and one of the world's most populous megacities, with an estimated 20,320,876 people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23,876,155 residents in its Combined Statistical Area. A global power city, New York City has been described uniquely as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports. The city's fast pace has inspired the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.
Manhattan - A ride all over New York City
Manhattan is the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough is coterminous with New York County, an original county of the U.S. state of New York. The borough mostly consists of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson and Harlem Rivers, but also includes several small adjacent islands and a small area on the mainland. Manhattan has been described as the economic and cultural center of the United States, and is home to the United Nations Headquarters. Wall Street in Lower Manhattan has been called the financial capital of the world, has an estimated GDP of over $1.2 trillion,[8] and is home of both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world, and many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough.

Gotham City vs Metropolis Results: Fanboy Faceoff
Gotham City vs. Metropolis Fanboy Faceoff Results
Subscribe to ClevverMovies:
Welcome back fanboys and fangirls! Like many of you out there, we're super excited to see two of DC Comics most iconic heroes face off against each other in the Batman/Superman movie. We've already pitted these two titans in a previous Fanboy Faceoff, but we recently rewatched The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel and it got us wondering - where would we rather live? Gotham City or Metropolis? And that's exactly what we're here to find out. Which of these fictional cities is the better place to live.
.
Though both cities are traditionally considered representations of real life New York City, they are depicted very differently from one another. Gotham is usually shown as a decaying, crime ridden city while Metropolis is painted with a more optimistic and futuristic brush. Frank Miller summed up the difference between the two cities best saying, Metropolis is New York in the daytime; Gotham City is New York at night. The geographic locations of both cities has also differentiated widely through the years, but are traditionally considered to be located in the Northeast United States, with Metropolis often being considered to exist within the State of New York and Gotham City in New Jersey. Metropolis has a slightly higher population of about 11 million to Gotham's 8 million. Despite having many similarities, you're probably more likely to get mugged or gunned down by a psychopathic clown in Gotham then Metropolis, but does that mean the city that Superman calls home is better? Not necessarily. Despite having notable locations with names like Slaughter Swamp and Toxic Acres and housing some of the world's worst criminals within the walls of Arkham Asylum, Gotham does have some things going for it. First up, it's number one business is Wayne Enterprises. Sure, Metropolis has LexCorp, but who would you rather have as a boss? A billionaire playboy that moonlights as a masked vigilante or a sadistic business magnate bent on world domination? The city is home to many museums that you can enjoy whenever they aren't being robbed or looted and sports lovers can enjoy watching one of the many local teams, including the Gotham Rogues. Just stay clear of that giant crater in the middle of the field and if you know anyone that's good at football, let me know. I hear they're looking for some replacements.Of course, Metropolis has its share of museums and sports teams too. You can take a stroll through one of the cities many outdoor locales like the picturesque Centennial Park or take a tour of the famous Daily Planet. Sounds pretty lovely, right? It is and having a super powered savior watching over you is always handy. So Metropolis it is! But hold on. Superman may possess superhuman abilities, but those powers often attract super powered villains and you know what happens when two super beings go at it. the last time you saw Batman level Gotham City going mano-y-mano against Joker, Penguin or The Riddler? Sure, a building, bridge or popular sporting arena might get destroyed, but nothing compared to that of the Man of Steel going up against Zod. But I'm sure that was just a one-time fluke, right? So now we put the question to you, our experts. Which city would you rather live in - Gotham City or Metropolis? Pack your bags and head over to the comments section or let us know over on Facebook or Twitter @ClevverMovies. You just may see your name mentioned in next week's results show. Until then, I'm Erin Robinson, thanks for tuning in!
