In this video we are going to visit the Gotlands Museum. The museum has some different exhibitions. The ones we are going to show in this video are the picture stone exhibition and the exhibition for the medieval Gotland. After our visit in the Gotlands Museum we are going to Visby City Wall which is a medieval defensive wall surrounding the city Visby in Gotland. This city wall is the best-preserved medieval city wall in all of Scandinavia and makes it a very special and unique city wall.

Im Juni 2017 startete die Aida-„Cara“ von Kiel aus zu einer Reise über die Ostsee. Erste Station war die schwedische Insel Gotland mit Visby, dem Hauptort der Insel und Bischofssitz. In der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich Visby zum führenden Handelshafen des Ostseeraumes. Längst sind in- und ausländische Touristen ein wichtiger Wirtschaftszweig. Die Stadt gehört zu den sehenswertesten Städten in Schweden, wozu auch der Dom zu Visby, ursprünglich Sankt-Maria-Kirche aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, sowie einige der zahlreichen Kirchenruinen wie St. Karin, St. Nikolaus oder das Kloster Solberga samt dem Museum Gotlands Fornsal beitragen. Das älteste erhaltene Gebäude der Stadt ist „Kruttornet“ (der „Pulverturm“), nach 1151 angelegt.
Die besondere Attraktion ist die fast vollständig erhaltene 3,6 Kilometer lange mittelalterliche Stadtmauer mit der Ruine der Visborg. Schon 1805 wurde die „Hansestadt Visby“ unter Denkmalschutz gestellt, seit 1995 ist sie mit ihren zahlreichen mittelalterlichen Bauten Teil des Weltkulturerbes der UNESCO.
Seit 1984 findet jedes Jahr Anfang August – stets in der 32. Kalenderwoche – auf Gotland und vor allem in Visby die Medeltidsveckan (Mittelalterwoche) statt, zu der Living-History-Darsteller aus ganz Europa anreisen. Die Festwoche mit großem historischen Spektakel, Ritterturnieren, Konzerten, mittelalterlichem Markt und anderen Kulturveranstaltungen erinnert an die Eroberung der Stadt und der Insel Gotland durch den dänischen König Waldemar IV. In Stockholm's main history museum was an exhibition about the Battle of Visby (or Gotland) in 1361. The battle is remarkable because many of those who died in it were thrown into one of five mass graves with all their kit on, and these were dug up in 1928-30. I also complain about a lack of information and labelling in museums.
In response to comments, in which people insisted that the armour shown in this video is 'lamellar' and not 'brigandine', I scrutinised some photographs in close-up and wrote to the museum. I have had a reply.I have had a reply from the museum. The lumpy parts are corrosion, and the smooth parts are modern plates added to hold the armour together. The finds are very fragile, and the little wire lacings are modern, and hold the original plates to the modern backing plates. It seems that these are indeed brigandines or 'coats of plates'. However, another armour from grave 25 is far more lamellar-like and has been reconstructed that way, but was not on display in this exhibition.

We happened to be in Visby during their summer festival. It is a Medieval fair, including many locals dressed in medieval garb, medieval music, and an open air market, with performers and wares. I met a Swedish woman married to an Australian and had a nice chat with them.
