(CFF FFS SWISS RAIL) Zurich/Altstetten/Winterthur variety pack
On the 31/8/18 I spent a rainy day at Zurich HB, the main terminus of the city of Zurich, Switzerland. The hotel was a stones throw from the railway station making it a surprisingly easy 3 minute walk to a relatively unguarded railway track. Nearby restaurant and bar even promotes trainspotting as seen by the signage on above their window (seen in the footage). After an 1hr 20 minutes of Zurich HB and quite possibly 200 trains later (there is a lot of trains to film I got shoulder ache and the camera was almost always running, I edited many minutes of footage I didn't know which direction to point the camera at times, in the end I just didn't move for ages lol). Since the rain kept coming down Joanne wanted a change of scene, so we looked at the map and looked for suburban stations on the other side of freight depots. After travelling a few stops and some massive depots later, we arrived at Altstetten where we see lots of freight and through workings at a little bit more speed. I'm very happy we went to Altstetten, I'd never heard of it and it delivered in spades with foreign SNCF French, Swiss and possibly other nations trains flying through. Some Austrian freight as well. After seeing all there was to see at Altstetten we found another station on the rail map called Winterthur. Armed with a shopping mall and enough Star bucks to keep Joanne happy for a few hours, I went on another stint on that particular station where again, it delivered in spades. Not to sound anti British, but I really enjoyed the railways in Switzerland. They are extremely exciting to watch. Zurich HB still uses loco traction so you have the shunters and run around locos at the terminus, its all reminiscent of 1980's Paddington or St Pancras. Its the railway as I remember it to be. I really hope you enjoy this presentation. It was a complete blast to be there and I would recommend going yourself if you want to see something different. Hotels are reasonable, everyone speaks English but it is expensive on food especially if your fine dining. A Mcdonalds is near on £10 per person. If you get a buffet they weigh the food on scales. Other interesting bits are that the upstairs carriages have play areas for toddlers. A slide and toys are there to keep them happy. Its very interesting and a delightful idea. Anyway, watch on and let me know what you think of Swiss rail. Please post a comment, like/dislike as you deem fit and as always thank you for watching. Richard and Joanne.

Zurich, Switzerland | 30 Tourist Attractions in 2019
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).
Augustinergasse is a colorful old-world street, known for the carved windows of former merchants’ houses. Shopping boulevard Bahnhofsstrasse is lined with high-end fashion stores and banks. Niederdorf is a popular nightlife area. The 9th-century Fraumünster church houses Marc Chagall's 1970s stained-glass windows, and the Grossmünster’s tower has views of the city, lake and Alps. The Landesmuseum traces Swiss culture over thousands of years. Cabaret Voltaire, a cafe/bar that's still in operation, was the 1916 birthplace of the Dada art movement. Work by modern artists like Alberto Giacometti is on display at the Kunsthaus museum.

Zurich, Switzerland part 2: Bahnhofstrasse, trams, museums, Zug
Continuing our in-depth look at Zürich, Switzerland focusing on the modern side of the city showing you the great boulevard, the Bahnhofstrasse lined with thriving, modern retail frontage from end to end, and some of Zürich's other shopping lanes.

We will go out on a lake boat ride, take you on an excursion to a nearby town, visit the main museums, and generally show you around.
Bahnhofstrasse is the pride of modern Zurich, and counts as the one and only Boulevard of the city. It is famous for being one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the world. Here you can get anything from diamond rings to chocolate to fur coats. About 140 stores are located along it. A study In 2011 named the Bahnhofstrasse the most expensive commercial rent for retail property in Europe. We'll take you up and down the full length of Bahnhofstrasse on foot and in the tram.
By the way the reason that we can present such a long and comprehensive program about Zürich is that it was filmed during 10 visits to Zürich in recent years.
Zürich’s Hauptbahnhof is the busiest train station in the world as measured by total number of daily trains, but the Hauptbahnhof is more than just a train station – it's like a small town in itself. There are many restaurants and bars and cafes and the lower level has got a vast shopping mall, and it is really popular because these stores are open at night and on Sundays when many of these stores in the city are closed. You'll find a whole variety of shops available here, not just travel items, luggage stores, but clothing stores and sundries, there is the sandwich shops, there is the stationary places, all kinds of ways to spend your money. If you're here towards the end of September you might get lucky and run into the Oktoberfest celebration. These are Swiss, they also like their beer and their lederhosen and their sausages, very similar to Munich in southern Germany in Bavaria. It's Oktoberfest time with some great Swiss beer, there's some music in the air, and a lot of fun. Everybody is very friendly here and the whole station turns into one big party scene.
There are nearly 300 hotels in Zürich so you have a wide range of choice from the cheapest hostel up to a five-star deluxe hotel like the hotels Savoy Bauer en Ville. It's right on Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse – a very refined and expensive place to stay, with prices generally above €500. Perhaps four-star luxury is more suitable for you and definitely less expensive. We enjoyed the St. Gotthard Hotel. It's right on the Bahnhofstrasse just one block from the train station, making access about the best in town.
For visitors who have any interest whatsoever in art, it's worth walking a few blocks to the south edge of the old town to visit Zürich's art museum, the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Behind the train station the country's largest museum occupies a huge neo-Gothic castle built a century ago and houses a grand display of Swiss history illustrating the full length of human culture from the Stone Age up through the 1940s.

★ 4K Cab ride Chur - Zürich, Switzerland [09.2016]
After the winter video from Chur to Zürich, many requested a video during the summer months, so here it is.
We start in Chur, the terminus station for the normal gauge SBB railway when heading south. In Chur, there are narrow gauge railway connections around the entire southeast Swiss region, operated by the Rhaetian railway, one of Switzerland's largest private operators.
As we head northwest through the mountains, we pass a few major lakes before eventually reaching Zürich, the highest frequency station in the largest city of Switzerland.

Milan to Zurich by EuroCity train from €29
A journey from Milan to Zurich by ETR610 EuroCity train, showing the train and the scenery. The train travels via Como, Lake Lugano, and the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest rail tunnel.
For practical information including times, fares & tickets see
Those of us who remember the drama of the old Gotthard Tunnel route through the high Alps will find this a disappointment, now that the most scenic hour has become 20 minutes in the new Gotthard Base Tunnel. But as the video shows, those who don;t know what they're missing will find it a scenic and enjoyable journey on excellent trains, past lovely Swiss & Italian lakes.
Ticino, Switzerland
Getting to the Ticino Canton of Switzerland by train from Zurich will be 1/3 faster when the new Gotthard Base tunnel opens in December 2016. This 35 1/2 mile tunnel is expected to open the southern region of Switzerland to more visitors and business from the north. Eating on board Swiss high speed rail is already a tasty experience From sandwiches, salads and pasta to creamy desserts and reasonable wines, the train offers good taste and terrific views.
The Swiss travel pass is an all-in-one first class ticket which gets you all around Switzerland by bus, train as well as boat. It also gives you access to museums throughout Switzerland. Its a great way to see this amazing country.
Arriving in Bellizona, the capital of the Ticino canton, is like stepping into the heart of the region. It is here where today the past is present and blends with the future. It is also a great place to get a taste of the Italian influence in the form of gelato.or ice cream.
And La Dolce vita carries on as one explores the three UNESCO World Heritage castles in Bellizona..Castelgrande, Montebello, Sasso Corbaro are fortifications that attest to the geographic importance of Bellizona.
Typical Ticino dishes include local warmed cheese with salads, creamy risotto, and polenta with mushrooms and rosemary, The waters cascade from waterfalls and rivers in this, the steepest and rockiest valley in the whole Alpine region. It is the result of the glaciers that were here eons ago. Crystal clear water, so pure and clean it can be drunk straight from the streams or from the fountains in the villages. And it tastes like cool liquid nirvana.
Some recent arrivals in this ancient village shows how exploring and playing in the Val Bavona is not just limited to travelers.
Ascona is on the northern shore of Laggo di Maggiore. Aside from the sunny Mediterranean atmosphere, in the summer there is the 10 day JazzAscona festival. It takes place at different venues along the waterfront as well as at restaurants and cafes in the old town. Many performances are free of charge and bring to the region talents from the New Orleans jazz scene as well as the music of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Aurora Nealand.and the Royal Roses.
Beyond all that jazz, there are elegant shopping boutiques, lively restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, as well as boating excursions on Lake Maggiore. And lots of waterfront bars and cafes serving up some wonderful ambiance.
On the lake of Lugano is the historic Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola built first as a private villa in 1885. Situated lakefront with a large beautiful garden and soaring palm trees - one could imagine that this is the French or Italian Riviera - in a bygone era. Rooms and suites with balconies overlooking the lake are mesmerizing. Peaceful and elegant, the accommodations are comfortably furnished with all the latest technology but still user-friendly. The public rooms are spectacular like the large drawing room in the Italian 17th century style and with a commanding fireplace.
On the terrace breakfast, lunch and dinner are served from the hotel's two restaurants. A little piano music in the evening makes the dishes at the hotel's casual restaurant, La Rucola, like risotto with Parmesan - and homemade strawberry, vanilla and chocolate gelato... fantastico.
The cheeses of Ticino capture the inseparable relationship between the land, the rich pastures, the Alpine herbs and flowers that all lend a unique quality to the milk. Many are artesanal, handcrafted cheeses which reflect the generations of knowledge and techniques. At the Gottardo Dairy guests can even make their own cheeses to take home.
For the carnivore, the selection of charcuterie is staggering. From Parma hams to air-cured dried beef or bresola. The salamis, and fresh produce combined with the local breads make sandwiches that would even impress the Earl of Sandwich. And here street food is a bargain.
At the Manoir Department store in Lugano there is also a restaurant offering excellent food at very affordable prices. In the grocery department, the store has one of the largest selections of Swiss chocolate anywhere. From local brands like Alprose, to well known international brands like Nestle, Toblerone, Lindt, Villars, Frey, Muntz, Teuscher, Springli, Suchard, and Cailler
No visit to Ticino is complete without a ride on one of the many boats that cruise the lakes. On the Lake of Lugano is the romantic car-free, village Gandria at the foot of Mt. Bre. From there it is a wonderful walk along the olive grove trail where nature weaves a tapestry of beauty. And after a great walk nothing could be more refreshing than a plunge into the pristine lake waters of Ticino.

Cabride in Switzerland - at Glacier Express: Chur - Tiefencastel
A Cab Ride in Switzerland.
★ 2x???? Lötschberg alpine crossing cab ride from Basel to Brig (through Switzerland)
Watch this video without the rear view camera:
Welcome to another cab ride, this time travelling over one of the 2 standard gauge alpine railway crossings in Switzerland, namely the Lötschberg. For those who aren't familiar with Swiss geography, the north is generally hilly with flat parts here and there, whereas the south lies in the middle of the alps, which span from Austria to the east right across to France in the southwest.
The first alpine crossing was achieved through the Gotthardbahn in 1882, which runs from central Switzerland to the southern most tip in Ticino.
In 1906, the BLS (Bern - Lötschberg - Simplon) was founded, who pioneered the alpine crossing over the Lötschberg pass, where we will be travelling today. In 2007, a base tunnel was opened, avoiding the steep ramps of the mountain pass and cutting time off the overall journey, however only one third is double tracked, reducing its capacity.
This has led to most northbound freight trains taking the mountain route, while southbound trains tend to be routed through the tunnel, hence most cab ride videos on youtube showing the mountain route being northbound.
We start our trip in Basel (1:45), where most freight on the north - south axis enters Switzerland (other points include Singen, St Margarethen, Buchs and very rarely Konstanz). From Olten (22:30), we take the new route to Rothrist, followed by the old route to Ostermundigen (1:14:00). From there we head to Frutigen (1:53:30), where the base tunnel starts, and take the mountain route to Brig. Note that Goppenstein is the highest railway station on the Swiss main network. Most of the line between Frutigen and Brig features 27‰ gradients, with speeds limited to 75km/h due to the curves. With heavier trains like ours, the electric regenerative brakes are not sufficient to keep the train from accelerating on the downward slopes (they may be sufficient, however electric braking is regulated in order to keep buffer pressure at safe levels and avoid a derailment). Train drivers therefore need to use the train brakes, reducing the speed for long enough so that the air brakes have at least 60 seconds to recover and reload.
Some of you may be wondering why the train keeps changing tracks on the Lötschberg Pass. We are travelling with a train that is taller than the typcial Swiss structure gauge. Trains like this are referred to as SIM trains (Simplon Intermodal). The Lötschberg pass was adjusted to accommodate these, however, as you could imagine, it involved a lot of work (enlarging tunnels, relocating infrastructure) so not all parts of the pass were adjusted. This is why SIM trains change tracks, to avoid sections of track without enough clearance. Train drivers are informed of these sections with signs and purple signals, which indicate halt for SIM trains. SIM trains also have to be registered on the cab radio during entry, in our case on the viaduct in Frutigen.
I will be working on the light flaring at tunnel ends, hopefully a set EV value should suffice. I also want to apologise for the glare around Thun and Spiez. It was just the time of day mixed with the condition of the windshield. I hope to get a better capture of this stretch sometime in the future - although it won't be easy getting weather like this again!
I hope you enjoyed the video. All videos on this channel may not be redistributed, sold, copied or used otherwise without my written permission. If anybody is interested in having any video in higher quality (higher bitrate), they are available for purchase at a price of $5 per hour (rounded down to half hour intervals). Alternatively, we could work out a monthly or yearly rate, whereby I will send you my videos, so you can watch them ad free and at higher quality than they are available on youtube.
