Strange New York - Grafton Peace Pagoda
PEACE PAGODA; Grafton, NY
April 12th 2014
Another beautiful day and we find ourselves looking for a travel destination so we open the pages of Weird New York and find one of the most unique travel locations. The Peace Pagoda in Grafton, New York was the day trip we chose.
We started on the North Way and traveled to Route Two. After a quick coffee break we traveled to Troy heading east. Once we made it into Grafton we started searching for signs pointing us in the right direction. The sign is small but noticeable. We started off onto a side road and found the peace pagoda.
There is no parking and the only place for vehicles is road side (they do make exceptions for wheelchairs). We didn't know what to expect. We know little about the Buddhist religion and didn't want to do anything disrespectful, so with that on our minds we started down a small winding woodland path that would lead to the Peace Pagoda.
After passing several cairns and other rock formations we entered open field and directly in front of us was the Peace Pagoda in all its glory. The hug white and gold structure stood out against the brown, early spring forest that surrounded it. It was really amazing sight, gleaming under the sunny blue sky.
We quietly made our way around the structure which had relief sculpture around depicting events in the life of Buddha. Another person told about a shrine nearby and told us to make sure we visited it. So once we completed the walk around on the pagoda we made our way into the shrine where we met with the caretaker and others.
We were offered tea and spoke with the people there. One man remembers the construction of the pagoda and I asked him several questions about how the building as made. We stayed for much longer than we had planned but the conversation was good and we really enjoyed the setting. The people there made us feel at ease and relaxed.
If you decide to visit bring something to offer. Food stuff is accepted but they also have dish for cash. It is quite a place to visit and unique; it is one of only two in the United States. Great place!

The last time I went camping was with my sisters, cousin and niece about 15 years ago. We packed our tents, cooler and sleeping bags, and huddled together on the hard and lumpy ground to keep warm.
Camping has changed quite a bit since then. It's even changed it's name to glamping! And my sister and I had the opportunity to experience this new camping experience sans outhouse at the beautiful Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat.
You can now enjoy the great outdoors in a mansion sized tent complete with a king size bed, soaker tub, and electric fireplace. To top off this luxury camping experience, my sister and I had the pleasure of also enjoying a yoga and wellness retreat while we were there.
It was exactly what my body and soul was craving. An escape from the city, healthy food, yoga and an opportunity to connect with myself. This is why as a Coach I also love creating retreats. It's amazing what some time away mixed with some adventure can do!

For my birthday in May, I'm asking my friends and family for a special gift: help me raise $2500 for Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF). It's a great cause that exists to improve the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases through advocacy, education and research The Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) is the national patient organization dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of primary immunodeficiency diseases through research, education and advocacy. In the United States, more than 250,000 people are diagnosed with primary immunodeficiency diseases and thousands more go undetected. Although relatively rare and often difficult to diagnose, there are 130 different primary immunodeficiency diseases. While not contagious, these diseases are caused by hereditary or genetic defects, in which part of the body's immune system is missing or functions improperly. Primary immunodeficiency diseases can affect anyone, regardless of age or sex. People with primary immunodeficiencies live their entire lives more susceptible to infections---enduring recurrent health problems and often developing serious and debilitating illnesses. Fortunately, with proper medical care, many patients are able to live fulfilling and independent lives.
I chose Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) because it has saved my life and I wouldn't be alive today without it. The education & support systems are fabulous. The friendships have been great...

Strange New York - Mystery and a Meal: The Lake George Mystery Spot
Strange New York – ‘Mystery and a Meal’
Lake George Mystery Spot - May 25th, 2015
We thumbed through the Weird New York book looking a location to visit over Memorial Day week end and found a location in Lake George called the mystery.
The mystery is when an individual stands on the mystery spot they report hearing an echo or reverberation when they speak which no one else. We decided to check out the mystery to see what we could make of it. First, we wanted to make sure the anomaly was real and second, we wanted to see if we could figure out why.
Once we got to the spot we found the echo actually works, we were able to get a few bystanders to try it. We figured the reverberation is coming from the way the plaza is constructed. The short wall surrounding the plaza actually causes the echo. We confirmed this when later that day we visited the Cohoes Falls Park and were able to replicate the effect.
Here are some other videos of people visiting the location:

Quattro Modena in USA, Utah, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin
Modena, New York
Modena is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is located in the northwestern corner of the town of Plattekill, centered at the junction of the US 44/NY 55 concurrency and NY 32
The area was first settled in the late 17th century and was originally called Clark's Corner. The name was changed to Modena in 1829,[1] and the hamlet most likely was named for the Italian city of Modena.
The Cole-Hasbrouck Farm Historic District and Thaddeus Hait Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4]
It has long been a primarily rural community with minimal development, although that has been changing enough for Hannaford to build one of its supermarkets on Route 32 just south of the junction in 2007. Additional commercial development in the immediate area include a Stewart's gas and convenience store, a renovated Citgo station, a Dollar General, and newly-built Dunkin Donuts in 2017.
Modena, Pennsylvania
Modena è un comune degli Stati Uniti d'America, nella contea di Chester, nello Stato della Pennsylvania. Modena, Utah

Modena (Iron) is on U-56, 9.4 miles east of the Nevada border and fifty miles west of Cedar City. The exact source of the name is hard to pin down. One source states that an Italian laborer named the railroad camp after Modena, Italy. Another source relates that a Chinese cook during the serving of dinner would call out periodically, Mo'dinna, mo'dinna. An earlier name was Deseret Springs.
With the advent of the railroad in Iron County and its arrival in the Modena area in December 1899, Brigham J. Lund, along with two partners, E. M. Brown and Jose Price, started a small business venture here. In time they were freighting to St. George, Utah; Pioche, Nevada and Delamar. Lund soon bought out his partners and in 1903 incorporated under the name of B. J. Lund & Company. The name Lund is still found on several buildings in town including the General Merchandise & Hotel building. By 1903, a U.S. Weather Bureau office had also been established in Modena. The Last Chance Saloon now closed and boarded up is a reminder of a distant era.
The change from steam to diesel by the railroad brought abut the demise of Modena which today is almost a ghost town. Only five families remain. There is a small convenience store/post office and a gas pump (no services available as of this writing) in town which served locals and others working the silver, iron ore, and beryl rock mines around the area. A stone school building is one of the more imposing solid structures in town. Edna Thorley 91, taught elementary school children in the building. She still lives in town and keeps up scrapbooks filled with memories of the past and present. Just north of town is the Modena cemetery.
Nearby towns includ Uveda, 11.8 miles southwest on U-56; Beryl, 18 miles northeast on U-257; Newcastle, 23.2 miles southeast on U-56; and Enterprise, 27.8 miles southeast on U-56, U-18. St. George is 67.3 miles south.
