The Granary Cemetery takes its name from the barn that was found next to the cemetery in the place that currently stands the Park Street Church. It was founded in 1660 and is the third oldest in Boston.
In the holy field lie the remains of important citizens. In it are buried three signatories of the declaration of independence of the United States: Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Robert Treat Paine. It is estimated that 5,000 people are buried in the cemetery.

Visiting the historic Granary Burying Ground - Boston, MA
Recorded December 15, 2012. Located right in the heart of Boston's historic district and just around the block from the Massachusetts statehouse is one of the city's oldest cemeteries. The historic Granary Burying Ground was established in 1660 and has managed to age well thanks to visitor friendly renovations. Despite its small size-the entire grounds can be easily walked in just a few minutes-it contains the final resting places of several founding fathers and important Revolutionary War era patriots. Incredibly, historians estimate there may be as many as 5,000 people laid to rest within Granary despite there only being around 2,000 headstones. The graves of Samuel Adams, the victims of the Boston Massacre, John Hancock, Paul Revere and Declaration of Independence signer Robert Treat Paine are highlighted in this brief jaunt. The large pyramid in the middle of the grounds contains the remains of Benjamin Franklin's parents.

The Granary Burying Ground in Massachusetts is the city of Boston's third-oldest cemetery, founded in 1660 and located on Tremont Street. It is the final resting place for many notable Revolutionary War-era patriots, including Paul Revere, the five victims of the Boston Massacre, and three signers of the Declaration of Independence: Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine. The cemetery has 2,345 grave-markers, but historians estimate that as many as 5,000 people are buried in it.[1] The cemetery is adjacent to Park Street Church and immediately across from Suffolk University Law School.
The cemetery's Egyptian revival gate and fence were designed by architect Isaiah Rogers (1800–1869), who designed an identical gate for Newport's Touro Cemetery.

He is most famous for alerting Colonial militia of approaching British forces before the battles of Lexington and Concord, as dramatized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, Paul Revere's Ride. Revere was a prosperous and prominent Boston silversmith, who helped organize an intelligence and alarm system to keep watch on the British military. Revere later served as a Massachusetts militia officer, though his service culminated after the Penobscot Expedition, one of the most disastrous campaigns of the American Revolutionary War, for which he was absolved of blame. Following the war, Revere returned to his silversmith trade and used the profits from his expanding business to finance his work in iron casting, bronze bell and cannon casting, and the forging of copper bolts and spikes. Want to see Boston like a local? I take you to Granary Burying Ground, one of the city’s oldest sites and a stop on the Freedom Trail. In use as early as 1660, this is nevertheless only the third oldest graveyard in the city. Notable people buried here include John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, Crispus Attucks (one of five victims of the Boston Massacre, he was of African and Native descent), and members of Benjamin Franklin’s family, though not Franklin himself.
Located directly on Tremont Street, one of downtown’s busiest roads, and within a five minute walk of City Hall, the Downtown Crossing shopping mall, the Boston Common, and the Massachusetts State House, the Burying Ground still has a feeling of partial seclusion and restfulness. The city’s sounds reach you, but are muffled by buildings on three sides.
