Grand Caverns is the oldest operating show cave in the United States, beginning tours in 1806. This is the last of our Virginia vlogs, at least while staying at Jannel and Christian's home. We really appreciate the hospitality they showed us, and miss them dearly, but our bus travels must roll on!

Grand Caverns in Grottoes, Virginia was discovered by Bernard Weyer in 1804. Because of its beauty and many unusual shield formations, Grand was one of the first caves to be commercialized in the United States. As of 2003, there were 3800 feet of surveyed passage, most of it on the commercial trail.
In the spring of 2004 a new section of Grand Caverns, all virgin, was discovered by VAR cavers while mopping up the resurvey of the commercial cave. By the end of 2005, an additional 2.8 miles of virgin passage was added to the length of the cave bringing Grand Caverns to a total of 3.82 miles long.
This program is about the discoveries that were made in the past 2 years, the challenges that confronted the cavers as they probed and mapped the new areas of the cave, and the fantastic formations that were found around every corner. Because of the fragile nature of the new discovery, and the difficulty in reaching it, many cavers, and especially the public, will never see these beautifully decorated rooms and passages in person. This program will attempt to show what lies beyond the tight crawl and small squeezes, and let viewers appreciate the wonders and beauty of the 'other' Grand Caverns.
Fountain Cave Wild Tour at Grottoes, Virginia
Fountain Cave, also known as Cave of Fountains, is one of three major caves located in Cave Hill just outside of Weyer's Cave and Grottoes, Virginia. The cave system here is located on private property. The most well known of the three major caves is Grand Caverns. The Grand Caverns show cave is easily visited by taking one of the daily guided tours. Fountain Cave, located in the same hill as Grand Caverns, was briefly opened as a show cave in the very early 20th Century. For some reason the tours closed and the cave became inaccessible to the public for over 100 years. Recently wild tours are being offered by the staff of Grand Caverns. Advanced reservations are highly recommended by contacting the Grand Caverns office. I scheduled my tour for a Saturday morning in late June, 2019. Our group consisted of two experienced guides, a guide in training, myself and five other guests. The tour lasted roughly about two hours.
After a steep but short hike up the hill, the tour enters the cave through a man made entrance in what is actually the back of the cave. The natural entrance is on the opposite side of the hill. There are some very crude walking paths in some parts of the cave, remnants of the days over a century earlier when public tours were offered. Old burned wood torches still lean against the walls in places. Today, the wild tour follows some of those old walking paths, but also offers many opportunities to go off trail and climb and crawl around through narrow passageways and into various rooms within the cave. There are no lights in the cave, only headlamps and flashlights. The cave is large and contains numerous formations. The guides pointed out several openings and passageways which have only been partially explored as well as others that to this day no one knows where they lead.

We went on a tour of Skyline Caverns in Front Royal Virginia. The caves aren't as large as some in the area but have some great examples of anthodites visible. Shot in October 2015.

How I spend my summer vacation: Biltmore House Road Trip
For the longest time my wife has wanted to see the Biltmore House, a mansion built near
Asheville, North Carolina by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and still
stands as the largest privately-owned home in the United States. Even though the last couple of
summers things came up that prevented me from keeping my promise to take her there this
summer we were able to go on what I like to call our Biltmore House Roadtrip
According to Mapquest the trip from Allentown, PA to Asheville, NC should take around 10
hours, if driven non-stop. That was a bit much to do non-stop so we decided to stop at a couple
of places on the way down and on the way back.
I used to do a lot of caving in my younger days so I enjoy visiting different commercial caves
whenever I can and this Road trip gave me several opportunities since we drove through
Virginia to get to Asheville, North Carolina.
The itinerary of the visits we decided on was in the order as follows:
Day 1
Shenandoah Caverns - in Shenandoah Caverns, Virginia
Day 2
Dixie Caverns - Salem, Virginia
Biltmore House - Asheville, North Carolina
Day 3
Biltmore House - Asheville, North Carolina
Day 4
Great Smokey Mountains Railroad - Bryson City, North Carolina
Smokey Mountain Trains - Bryson City, North Carolina
Day 5
Chimney Road - Chimney Rock, North Carolina
P. Buckley Moss Museum - Waynesboro, Virginia
Day 6
Grand Caverns - Grottoes, Virginia
Day 1 - Shenandoah Caverns
Our first stop on the Biltmore House Road trip was at the Shenandoah Caverns in Shenandoah
Caverns, Virginia.
The cavern is known for it's famous Breakfast Bacon limestone formations that I first saw in
the 1964 National Geographic magazine. It's also the only cavern I've been in that has an
elevator to get down in the cavern.
Included at this stop was a visit to the American Celebration on Parade display just down the hill
from Shenandoah Caverns. According to the American Celebration on Parade display ad, you
will see spectacular parade floats from famous national celebrations such as the Rose Parade,
Presidential Inaugurals, the Miss America Parade, the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and many
more! It's an amazing exhibition that fills 40,000 square feet of floor space with huge floats and
delightful animated figures.
So this was a pretty good start to our road trip because there was something for me, the
Shenandoah Caverns, and something for my wife, the American Celebration on Parade display.

Caverns at Natural Bridge State park in Virginia. This is well worth the time to get the package tickets and is only a short drive down Rt 11 from The Natural Bridge itself. The tour is about an hour long and a long sleeve shirt or light jacket is recommended since you are going underground. The average Temperature inside the cavern is approximately 54 degrees but feels so nice on a hot summer day.

Day 2 - Dixie Caverns
Yesterday we left Shenandoah Caverns and drove down to Salem, Virginia to get a motel room near Dixie caverns. That way we could get an early start, see the caverns and then head down to the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina.
We ended up as the first people there, even beating the people that run the place. That turned out to be lucky for us because it ended up being only the two of us and three other people on the first tour. Even more luckier when you see all the buses full of kids that waited in the parking lot when we came back from the tour.
Dixie Caverns reminded me of the caves I used to cave in. It was kinda dark and very wet. I liked it but Kathy didn't care for it because she found the steps, of which there was a lot, wet and slippery.
Unfortunately because of how dark the cavern was the video I took was to dark to use, except for the video I did of the buses I mentioned before.
If you find yourself in the Dixie Caverns area do stop in. I think you'll enjoy it if you like caves. If your SO doesn't care for caves or caverns the is a fairly large antique mall, gift shop and rock and mineral shop that might keep then busy while you take the tour.
