Let's Go Hiking! Rough Ridge - Grandfather Mountain, NC, USA - Blue Ridge Mountains
This is the full hike from bottom to top of Rough Ridge on the shoulder of Tanawha AKA Grandfather Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off the Parkway on 10 September 2012.
Rough Ridge is located just north of Mile Post 303 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. The trail does not lead to the top of the mountain but provides some of the only exposed ridgetops in the whole range. From those smaller ridges and the summit at 4800 feet the hike boasts breathtaking views of several dozen surrounding peaks as well as the Linville Gorge (see my associated hiking vid). The trail is about .75 miles each way with a 500 foot elevation gain. As noted both here and in the video, the mountain is covered in rare, fragile plant communities so please watch your step if you visit! It might just look like a smear of color on a rock, but it's alive and is probably older than your family name.
Grandfather (or Tanawha in the Cherokee language meaning Hawk) Mountain is the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses it across some amazing viaducts. It is unusually rugged for the Southern Appalachians. There is at least one flower (the pink shell azalea) that is found nowhere else on Earth. The mountain is privately owned and all other points beyond Rough Ridge keep business hours and require an access fee. The family owners donated the portion of the land Linn Viaduct crosses to reduce the environmental impact of the parkway.
The video doesn't do this place justice. It was an old camcorder that ended up failing entirely later that trip. If you have an opportunity to take the Parkway or the Skyline, take it. It's slower than any other road around but you won't care. You might even find yourself going below the speed limit just to take in all the natural magnificence.

Grandfather Mountain State Park - Linville, North Carolina
Took a day trip up to Grandfather Mountain today, to hike the Grandfather Mountain Trail. This trail is very technical and tough. It's said to be the most rugged trail in the eastern US and after hiking it, I believe it. This trail offers it's hikers cable assisted climbing, wooden ladders, squeezing through boulders, hand over hand climbing, but it's also incredibly fun and the views are absolutely stunning! This is my all-time favorite trail to date.
I first stopped by the Mile High Swinging Bridge to check it out and it's really cool... Just very crowded. Then I hopped on the Grandfather Mountain Trail and traversed through the fir forest to MacRae Peak, Attic Window and the end of the trail, to the top of Calloway Peak at 5964 ft. high.

Grandfather Mountain via Profile Trail - Grandfather Mountain State Park, NC
A difficult, exciting, exhilarating, rocky, tiring, fun hike on my 30th birthday at one of my favorite places in North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain. I used the steep, rocky Profile Trail to access the crest where I first jaunted up to Calloway Peak, the highest peak on the mountain massif. I also checked out the Watauga View briefly and also dropped down to the airplane crash site. The next part is some of the most exciting ridgeline scrambles anywhere in the Southeast as the trail follows bare rock cliffs, heath and krummholz on its way over the magnificent summits of Attic Window Peak and MacRae Peak. The swinging bridge and Linville Peak are kind of a let down, mainly because of the crowds, but at least you get to return the same way! It took a little over 8 hours to hike 11.4 miles. I stopped a lot but it is difficult and has given me a bout of plantar fasciitis in the days after.

Hiking to Calloway Peak, Grandfather Mountain, NC - Winter 2016
Sam wanted to go camping for his 10th birthday, so we headed up to Calloway Peak, the summit of Grandfather Mountain (State Park).
This video will show Profile Trail, Shanty Spring, and Calloway Peak in January. Unfortunately, my battery died on the phone and the recharging pack wouldn't work so I wasn't able to get video of Raven's Roost campsite. Raven's Roost is back down the other side of the mountain from Profile Trail. It was pretty treacherous getting down to it because the trail was almost entirely ice. The site was nice however as they have built a camping platform that is perfectly flat.
Grandfather Mountain Day Hike in 4K
This was a day hike with my hiking club, the Greenville Natural History Association (GNHA). GNHA is the largest and most active hiking club in Upstate South Carolina. We have approximately 600 members. Our hikes are in South Carolina, North Carolina and sometimes Tennessee and Georgia.
The hike was on Grandfather Mountain, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Linville, North Carolina. The hike was on August 25, 2018. The hike stats: 11.5 miles & 3600 feet of elevation gain.
We started the hike at the Profile trailhead. From the Profile Trail, we took the Grandfather Trail to Calloway Peak. We then backtracked on the Grandfather Trail and hiked it to Attic Window Peak, MacRae Peak, and Linville Peak. We then returned to the Profile trailhead, bypassing a section of the Grandfather Trail via the Underwood Trail.
The Grandfather trail is very difficult. Here is a description from Wikipedia:
The Grandfather trail traverses the 2.4 miles of ridgeline between Calloway Peak and the Swinging Bridge (Linville Peak), attaining Attic Window and MacRae Peaks along the way. This trail is among the most difficult and technical in the region. In addition to significant steep elevation gain and loss, trail conditions include frequent exposure to very high winds, contiguity to several large cliffs, crossings of cracked boulders, and multiple traverses aided by fixed ladders and cables.
This 2.4 miles is normally covered at below half of normal hiking pace. In favorable weather conditions this trail is considered advanced. In poor weather, (throughout the winter and much of spring), this trail should only be attempted by experienced, expert hikers, due to significant formation of ice sheets, accumulation of snow, frequent low visibility, and commonly sub-zero wind chill factors.
The Grand-Further Mountain Run trail race was being conducted on the same day that we did this hike, so we got to see several runners completing in this grueling event.
Grandfather Mountain Ladders Trail
Grandfather Mountain rises tall above the Blue Ridge Mountains at a whopping 5,946 feet tall. The mountain is closest to the city of Linville, NC near the Blue Ridge Parkway, spanning three different counties: Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga Counties. Within Grandfather Mountain's nature preserve, many unique things exist: a subalpine climate with unique biodiversity, a mile-high swinging bridge, an animal habitat with bears, otters, and bald eagles, and extensive hiking trails that run the ridgelines of the mountain. One of the most popular trails, the Grandfather Trail, begins at the parking lot near the swinging bridge and meanders along the ridgelines to Macrae Peak and Calloway Peak. It is dotted with several ladders and cables that aid hikers in reaching the steepest and most exposed parts of the trail.
Full Hike (WM; Stabilized): The Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina
The Profile and Grandfather Trails flank the western slopes of Grandfather Mountain and cross both state park and private attraction areas. The former is longer, but the latter is much tougher (imagine tackling 18 ladders on a single hike). Individually, each takes about half a day of hiking, but when combined the 12-mile endurance test is one of the most intense in the Eastern U.S.
Nonetheless, rewarding treats await. Views of the surrounding highlands and seemingly endless layers of ridges. Dark caves and crevices for exploration. Quiet backcountry campsites to snooze under the stars. Remnants of a downed aircraft contrast the natural setting.
All lead to the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, located at the Grandfather Trailhead. It is the country's highest suspension connector. And the bridge does swing, maybe too generously for everyone's comfort. Retreat to safer grounds when record-setting winds—not uncommon for the area—stir up.
Route: Profile Trail-Grandfather Trail
Type: Loop (lollipop)
Distance: 12 mi.
Elevation Gain: 3647 ft.
Location: Grandfather Mountain State Park-Grandfather Mountain Park, Linville, North Carolina, USA
Date/Time: 2019-04-17 09:46
It was during a descent. Video day. Number eight or nine (I cannot remember which now). Either could be when my left knee finally felt appropriate to remind me that I had pushed too hard. The minor pinch grew into a throbbing agony with each step.
I should have taken those ladders seriously.
Initially, I was going to cover only the Grandfather Trail. After more researching and reading others' experiences I figured there would be value in showing Grandfather AND Profile—both popular approaches. I am satisfied with the result. In the video, I move with confidence. In reality, my hike precipitated a boring two-week, no-rigorous-activity rest. Not good, especially for the restless.
Hiking maps were available from the state park and attraction. I visited the swinging bridge for free by entering the state park side. I did not camp on the mountain. I definitely encountered more people on Grandfather Trail. I was probably one of the few crazy enough to have done the circuit twice. 36 ladders in all.
