Save Beach or Let Sea Win?
Save Beach or Let Sea Win?
As coastal storms gain frequency and intensity, barrier islands, including North Wildwood, are taking preventive measures to protect public infrastructure and private property.
The beaches along North Wildwood's northern end have suffered in past storms, including nor'easters and hurricanes in 2017 and 2018.
Erosion has narrowed the Hereford Inlet beach and portions along Third Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Conditions led to a beach back-passing project that borrowed sand from Wildwood and built up the dunes.
As 2018 nears an end, the Herald contacted city officials for an explanation of their plan to maintain and restore the northern beaches.
A recently completed beach survey, conducted with Stockton University's Coastal Research Center and Dr. Stewart Farrell, director of the center, allows the city to examine the state of its beaches more closely.
Damage claims may be submitted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency after storms. Another back-passing project is scheduled for spring 2019.
Another proactive stance is the extension of the city's stone sea-wall, a landmark used by residents and beachgoers.
Since 2017, Mayor Patrick Rosenello has continued pressing for the extension, explaining the necessity of protecting the city's estimated infrastructure value at $2.5 billion; adding sewer, water, and utility lines, it rises to $3 billion.
The city received a $7 million grant for the extension and will conduct a grant match to the amount. Officials are waiting on the state Department of Environmental Protection for approval of plans to work on the bulkhead and the Army Corps of Engineers for the long-awaited dune system project, slated for 2019-2020.
NJ Blue Crab breathing out of water while crabbing in New Jersey
We were crabbing in Sea Isle City, NJ after renting a canopy boat from Larsen's Marina (over the bridge) and caught this little guy using crab baskets and some bunker as bait. It's always interesting watching blue crabs' unique anatomy function. New Jersey blue claws are a yearly favorite for me and my family every year in Sea Isle.
Our grandmom taught us how to make crabs and spaghetti using Hunt's tomato sauce, a bit of garlic powder, and plenty of fresh basil leaves. Semolina pasta was mandatory for granny, but we experimented with whole wheat one year and she was not happy :) She passed away a few years ago, so it's important to keep up this tradition.
