FOUNDER OF SAMURAI CULTURE: Minamoto Yoritomo's Grave in Kamakura
Minamoto Yoritomo was the first shogun of the Kamakura bakufu, which was Japan's samurai ruling government system in the 12th-14th centuries. He fought off the powerful Taira and his own family in the Genpei War which resulted in him building the bakufu in Kamakura. Tyler being a big fan of the Genpei War and Heian history, he had to check out this landmark.

Yoritomo was the third son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, heir of the Minamoto (Seiwa Genji) clan, and his official wife, a daughter of Fujiwara no Suenori, who was a member of the illustrious Fujiwara clan. Yoritomo was born in Atsuta, Owari Province(present-day Atsuta-ku, Nagoya). At that time Yoritomo's grandfather Minamoto no Tameyoshi, was the head of the Minamoto.

Minamoto No Tametomo, The Greatest Archer Who Ever Lived
Minamoto no Tametomo served on the side of ex-emperor Sutoku during the Hogen Rebellion (July 28 - August 16, 1156), a conflict between the Sutoku and his younger brother, reigning Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Samurai Minamoto no Tametomo suggested strategy of an attack on Emperor Go-Shirakawa’s army. Unfortunately, Sutoku ignored this plan and the rebellion failed. The winning side’s punishments were brutal and all Minamoto rebels were executed by decapitation.
