Frankfurt - Germany's ultimate skyline
Join in on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with #germany25reunified and
Over the past 25 years, stunning skyscrapers have been rising up in Frankfurt to form Germany’s most impressive
skyline. This breathtaking silhouette includes Commerzbank Tower, the tallest building in Germany. It is also no
surprise that the city is home to Europe’s third biggest airport, with 1,400 planes arriving and departing every day
and up to 90 take-offs and landings per hour. Frankfurt also prides itself on its heritage, including the old quarter
around the Römer town hall and the house in which Goethe was born.
Many thanks to and

Trier to Cologne to Berlin by DB Regio and ICE.
100th video on YouTube! Rail trip day in Germany. Starting in Trier on the Mosel (Moselle). This town has a long history. It predates roman times. And when they settle there, they elevated this town as provincial capital. It became the 4th most populous city during the hight of Rome. Even during medieval time the city held seat for an archbishop. The city has been continuously a hub in the wine commerce in the Mosel since roman times.
To travel from Trier to Cologne by rail, the fastest way is by IC via Koblenz, thru the Moselle and Rhine. I've done that a couple of times before, but a long time ago, I took a secondary line thru the Eifel mountains. It doesn't have the wide vistas or the Rhine nor Moselle, nevertheless, this route has one of most beautiful countryside views that one can see riding a train. It is also quite possible one of slowest rides that you can get of any DB line. The line close to Trier is mostly single track. The passenger material is by Coradia LINT DMUs. The trip to Cologne takes about 3hs.
Cologne has a great central station which is just few meters away from one of Germany's most iconic and most visited buildings. The Kölner Dom, or Cologne Cathedral. It is a massive building that took 632 years to finish it. It started in 1248 and it was only finished in 1880. Years after the foundation of German Republic. It survived the heavy bombarding of WWII, but it bears signs of it.
I actually had 70 min to visit the cathedral before taking my next train at late afternoon to Berlin. This leg of my trip was done with an ICE train. Since I took a TGV from Paris to Strasbourg the day before, I can make some direct comparisons. The ICE interior is more comfortable and quiet. But interior design it is a little dull with predictable navy blue seats and shades of grey for the rest. In contrast, you won't be able to not notice the colorful interiors of the current TGVs. Purple seats with turquoise and coral color accents.
The trip from Cologne to Berlin took 4hs, However the ICE rail network has less high speed only dedicated track, therefore only after Hannover the train traveled faster.
I arrived in Berlin past 8 in the evening. So I couldn't appreciate the famed glass roof of the new station, but I saw the station the next day from the Spree river. I spent the next 2 days in Berlin.

Hanover is the capital city of the German state of Lower Saxony. It's known for trade fairs like the annual CeBIT tech expo. The red-brick Gothic Market Church and the Old Town Hall stand among half-timbered houses in the rebuilt old town. The ornate New Town Hall has views from its dome and 4 different scale models of the city through the ages. The 17th-century Herrenhäuser Gardens are just outside the city center.
Hanover is not a typical European city. Don't expect to see beautiful centuries-old buildings; this city was one of the hardest hit during World War II, leaving it with only a few historical landmarks. Even the Old City (Altstadt) area is new, all the old houses left standing after the war (around 40) were taken from throughout the city and deposited here. This area is surrounded by grey 1950's buildings that give a somewhat heavy atmosphere to the streets. However, there still are several residential neighborhoods consisting of late-19th-century housing stock with often elaborate historicist (Victorian) and Jugendstil (Art Noveau) decorations just outside the downtown area, such as Oststadt, List or Linden.
Hanover has large green areas, with forests and big parks. The landscape is mostly flat, with the river Leine going through the city. The lake Masch (Maschsee) is rather spectacular, considering its size as a man-made object.
The city had a special relationship to the late French artist Niki de Saint-Phalle. She had several of her works in public spots in Hanover (i.e., the Nanas, the Cave in the Great Garden) and also in the Sprengel Museum. To honor her contribution to Hanover, she was granted an honorary citizenship from the city government. Moreover, the recently renovated underground shopping passageway from the central station to Kröpcke was named The Niki de Saint-Phalle Promenade. Hanover's public services are excellent, due to major reconstruction for the World EXPO 2000. The shopping area under the train station was renovated in 2005-2006 in preparation for the World Cup.
Kröpcke is a large pedestrian area in the heart of Hanover. It is Hanover's major shopping spot, home to the Opera house and has lots of places to eat. The main station in the Hanover Stadtbahn network, is also located here. All Stadtbahn lines except the 10 and 17, call at the station and it is the main interchange point for the network. It has six platforms in total on three lines that cross each other in independent tunnels. There is a big green clock in Kröpcke (KröpckeUhr) which makes an ideal meeting point.
Hanover has a fantastic network of public transportation, so it's best to just park your car and ride. If you plan to make more than than two trips by tram, bus, or subway, a day ticket is your best bet, buying you unlimited travel on the public transport system. Day tickets are valid until the last connection of the day (which normally ends sometime after midnight). The public transportation adopts an honor system for tickets, but they do have ticket inspections once in a while (also late at nights and early mornings). The fine is quite high, so make sure you have a ticket all the time. Be aware that some tickets will need to be validated (stamped on the 'blue box'), and some not, depending on the machine.
