Lake Drummond & Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a 112,000 acre seasonally flooded wetland forest located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The Dismal Swamp today is only a fraction of its original size. This forest once covered over 1 million acres. It is one of the most important wildlife habitats in the Mid Atlantic region. The over 3000 acre Lake Drummond is located nearly in the center of the refuge. It is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. The area has a rich human history as well, beginning some 13,000 years ago. During the Civil War, the swamp play a key role in the Underground Railroad. Some slaves stayed in the swamp and formed communities there. They were known as Maroons. Little is actually known about the Maroons. The Great Dismal Swamp could still be hiding many unknown mysteries in this remote and solitary forest.
In this episode, we drive along Railroad Ditch, West Ditch, and the Interior Ditch to view Lake Drummond. We also stop to check out a few short boardwalk hiking trails along the way. Thanks for watching!

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1974 to help protect and preserve a portion of the Great Dismal Swamp, a marshy region on the Coastal Plain of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina in the United States. It is located in parts of the independent cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk in Virginia, and the counties of Camden, Gates, and Pasquotank in North Carolina.
Great Dismal Swamp
The Great Dismal Swamp is a marshy area on the Coastal Plain of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina in the United States. It is located in parts of southern Chesapeake and Suffolk in Virginia, as well as northern Gates, Pasquotank, and Camden Counties in North Carolina. It is a southern swamp, one of many along the Atlantic Ocean's coast which includes the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp in Florida, the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia, the Congaree Swamp and Four Holes swamps of South Carolina, and some of the Carolina bays in the Carolinas. Along the eastern edge runs the Dismal Swamp Canal, completed in 1805.
Essential to the swamp ecosystem are its water resources, native vegetative communities, and varied wildlife species. The Great Dismal Swamp's ecological significance and its wealth of history and lore make it a unique wilderness. It is one of the last large and wild areas remaining in the Eastern United States.
After centuries of logging and other human activities which were devastating the swamp's ecosystems, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1973 when the Union Camp Corporation of Franklin, Virginia donated 49,100 acres (200 km²) of land; the refuge was officially established through The Dismal Swamp Act of 1974.
The refuge consists of over 111,000 acres (500 km²) of forested wetlands. Lake Drummond, a 3,100 acre (13 km²) natural lake, is located in the heart of the swamp. Outside the boundaries of the National Refuge, the state of North Carolina has preserved and protected additional portions of the swamp, as the Great Dismal Swamp State Natural Area

The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge encompasses more than 112,000 acres of contiguous forest located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. It is home to some of the most important wildlife habitat in the mid-Atlantic region visited by more than 200 species of birds and a variety of reptiles and mammals, including otter, bat, raccoon, red fox, white-tailed deer, American black bear and bobcat. Learn how federal funding for Hurricane Sandy recovery is supporting a water management project led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that will help reduce impacts of floods and wildfire on wildlife and communities such as Chesapeake and Suffolk, Virginia along the refuge.

Flying over Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Centuries of farmland development have damaged the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge’s ability to store water and resist storms, wildfires and droughts. Hurricane Sandy funds will be used to install, repair, or replace water control structures on some of the many ditches that have been dug throughout the refuge. Increased control over water levels at the refuge will not only create a habitat more resilient to large storms, wildfires, and drought, but it will also help protect the city of Chesapeake and the Deep Creek community against flood events.
