Saturday March 16th 9AM
We will meet at River Island Adventures in Longs, SC to be shuttled up to the put in by J and L Kayaking. We will paddle approximately 9 miles back to the outfitters where we will camp with our vehicles. This means you will not have to pack your gear in the kayak. Bring your camp chair because that evening we will hang around the fire with Chris from Hook, Line and Paddle for a Q and A about his source to sea trip down the Cape Fear River back in 2016. We will camp that evening at River Island Adventures.
Sunday March 17th
After breakfast you have two options. For an additional fee of 30 dollars you will be boated out to Escape Island and compete in a Survivor Style Challenge. We will split up into teams of two and compete to unlock the challenges and get access to a tandem kayak. You will then paddle the 1/2 mile back to the outpost and first team back wins the challenge. The winner gets a T-Shirt so you can show off the fact you survived Escape Island. For those not wanting to compete in the challenge you can paddle out to the island and watch everyone else in the competition as they try to Survive Escape Island.

Kayaking at Murrells Inlet
Express Water Sports in Murrells Inlet SC. We kayaked in the Inlet waterway for about 45 minutes. There was a lot of boat traffic but it added to the excitement. The only trouble we encountered was when got back to the boat dock. Several boats capsized, but it was all in good fun.

Waccamaw Riverkeeper Series on Snakes
Snake Series
I think we can all agree that this rough green snake is cute enough to be an accessory but this Opheodrys aestivus isn't interested in being my new bracelet. Its only interests are insects, snails, tree frogs, arthropods and a healthy habitat on the river.
We're joining up with Paul Laurent & Amanda Curl of Black River Outdoors on a new series about snakes. Our mission is to increase community awareness about the snakes that currently call the Waccamaw River home and engage our community in helping to protect clean water and vital wildlife habitats. So jump in the river and get virtually wet with us each month as we explore the wonderful world of snakes.

Kayaking with a Pod of Dolphins Near Emerald Isle/Swansboro in North Carolina.MOV
On the afternoon of September 29, 2011 while vacationing in Emerald Isle, we left Barrier Island Kayaks in Swansboro, crossed the very wavy and windy intercoastal area, and began exploring the beautiful Salt Marshes and Estuaries in the area. About two hours into our trip, we were joined by a pod of 5 dolphins. (4 adults and 1 adolescent) Initially, they were about 100 feet from us, but would come as close as 50 or 15 feet. They were so graceful and beautiful, and we had a total sense of peace in their presence. It was so surreal to hear them breathing and chatting to one another as we sat quietly and motionless, and just watched and listened. What a blessing! One of the most awesome experiences of our lives. (You will initialy see a few dolphins in the distance to the right of the tower on shore. They will move closer, and then at around 45 seconds, two of them pass just in front of our kayaks. You can hear them breathe if you turn up the volume. If possible, watch the video maximized or full screen for the best view.) We were so in awe that we missed many video opportunities, but this one is pretty great. Enjoy!

SUMMARY
=======
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in December 1860, and was one of the founding member states of the Confederacy in February 1861. The bombardment of the beleaguered U.S. garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861 is generally recognized as the first military engagement of the war.
South Carolina was a source of troops for the Confederate army, and as the war progressed, also for the Union, as thousands of ex-slaves flocked to join the Union. The state also provided uniforms, textiles, food, and war material, as well as trained soldiers and leaders from The Citadel and other military schools. In contrast to most other Confederate states, South Carolina had a well-developed rail network linking all of its major cities without a break of gauge. Relatively free from Union occupation until the very end of the war, South Carolina hosted a number of prisoner of war camps. South Carolina also was the only Confederate state not to harbor pockets of anti-secessionist fervor strong enough to send large amounts of white men to fight for the Union, as every other state in the Confederacy did.
Among the leading generals from the Palmetto State were Wade Hampton III, one of the Confederacy's foremost cavalry commanders, Maxcy Gregg, killed in action at Fredericksburg, Joseph B. Kershaw, whose South Carolina infantry brigade saw some of the hardest fighting of the Army of Northern Virginia and James Longstreet, the senior Lieutenant General in the army, and Stephen D. Lee, the youngest Lieutenant General.
TWB is Live! Hurricane Florence Hits US Carnival Royal Caribbean Norwegian Updates!
TWB is Live! Hurricane Florence Hits US Carnival Royal Caribbean Norwegian Updates! Hurricane Florence is now hitting the coast of South Carolina. The storm is slowing it's forward motion down to a crawl and will likely dump huge amounts of rain for the next few days. Carnival has a ship called the Carnival Ecstacy due to land in Charleston SC on Sunday but the port is closed right now until Saturday night and may not be open by Sunday with the amount of flooding that is expected in the area. The Grandeur of the Seas is supposed to be in Baltimore on Sunday along with Carnival Pride, but they may not make it there either due to the fact that the ships are in the Port Canaveral area waiting for the hurricane to pass first.
