Antwerp,Antwerpen,Anvers:
Antwerp is a city in Belgium, the capital of Antwerp province in the region of Flanders. With a population of 510,610, it is the most populous city proper in Belgium. Its metropolitan area houses around 1,200,000 people, which is second behind Brussels.
Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe and within the top 20 globally.
Antwerp has long been an important city in the Low Countries, both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury (1576) in the Dutch Revolt. The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren, after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, lord, referring to the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. The city also hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics.
Antwerp had an artistic reputation in the 17th century, based on its school of painting, which included Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, the two Teniers and many others.
Informally, most Antverpians (in Dutch Antwerpenaren, people from Antwerp) daily speak Antverpian (in Dutch Antwerps), a dialect that Dutch-speakers know as distinctive from other Brabantic dialects through its typical vowel pronunciations: approximating the vowel sound in 'bore' – for one of its long 'a'-sounds while other short 'a's are very sharp like the vowel sound in 'hat'. The Echt Antwaarps Teater (Authentic Antverpian Theatre) brings the dialect on stage.
ntwerp is the focus of lines to the north to Essen and the Netherlands, east to Turnhout, south to Mechelen, Brussels and Charleroi, and southwest to Ghent and Ostend. It is served by international trains to Amsterdam and Paris, and national trains to Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Brussels, Charleroi, Hasselt, Liège, Leuven and Turnhout.
Antwerp Central station is an architectural monument in itself, and is mentioned in W G Sebald's haunting novel Austerlitz. Prior to the completion in 2007 of a tunnel that runs northwards under the city centre to emerge at the old Antwerp Dam station, Central was a terminus. Trains from Brussels to the Netherlands had to either reverse at Central or call only at Berchem station, 2 kilometres (1 mile) to the south, and then describe a semicircle to the east, round the Singel. Now, they call at the new lower level of the station before continuing in the same direction.
Antwerp is also home to Antwerpen-Noord, the largest classification yard for freight in Belgium and second largest in Europe. The majority of freight trains in Belgium depart from or arrive here. It has two classification humps and over a hundred tracks.Wikipedia

City Cuts - Hasselt Belgium
Hasselt is the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg. It has a population of 68,000, and is located 70 kilometers east of Brussels, in the Maas-Rhine region. The E313 roadway and the Albert Canal pass through Hasselt from northwest to southeast.
The Hasselt municipality includes the original city of Hasselt, plus the old communes of Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Wimmertingen, Kermt, Spalbeek, Kuringen, Stokrooie, Stevoort and Runkst, as well as the hamlets and parishes of Kiewit, Godsheide and Rapertingen.
On 31 December 2007 Hasselt had a total population of 71,520.
Both the Demer river and the Albert Canal run through the municipality. Hasselt is located in between the Campine region, north of the Demer river, and the Hesbaye region, to the south. It is also situated in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.
Hasselt has a very contemporary demeanor, it is an administrative center as well as a commercial one. The central Grote Markt may not be that big, but the friendly atmosphere around thecosy terraces and the numerous sidewalk cafés on the square certainly make up for the lack of grandeur that typifies the Belgian Market Square in cities such as Brussels and Antwerp.
A famous flavored Gin, spiced with juniper berries and called Jenever, is made in Hasselt; there are several factories, and a museum dedicated to its history.
Hasselt boasts several interesting museums. Two museums of interest are the Stedelijk Museum, an archive of fashion from 1830 onwards, and the Stedelijk Beiaardmuseum, dedicated to carillons. An very charming tourist attraction is the beautiful Japanese Garden on the outskirts of the city. Not far from Hasselt lies also the magnificent Open Air Museum of Bokrijk, dedicated to Flemish rural architecture of the past and the Flemish country life.

On the 2nd of January, Robyn's brother dropped us off at Brussels airport so that Robyn and I could catch a train into Brussels Central Station. This will mark the beginning of our 24-hour adventure in Brussels before we catch the train to Amsterdam (where we will spend 2 nights!)
In this video, you'll join us as we walk from Central station directly into the Godiva chocolate shop! :-) Then you'll join us as we check-in to our room at Bedroom.
Afterwards, we will take you on an adventure where we will take you to experience the following;
- Mulled wine
- show you Winter Wonders
- Grand Place
- Cave Du Roy (and eat snails!)
- a place for beer degustation
- the Grand Place light show
- a waffle place
- a comic museum
- a smurf store
We walked into tons of chocolate shops and walked the small cobblestones streets. We did all of this in exactly 24 hours ;)
