We are in Tunisia to explore two of the major architectural monuments, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Roman Ruins of Sbeitla.
Our first stop is Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and important pilgrimage destination. In fact, it is the 4th most holy destination in the Muslim faith for its architectural masterpiece, the Great Mosque of Kairouan which dates back to 670 AD, making it one of the oldest mosques. The walled medina is also famous for being the filming location of the 1981 film Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Next we visit a carpet shop where we explore the Berber and Tunisian carpets, a hand-made traditional craft in Tunisia.
Sbeitla (aka Sufetula and in Arabic سبيطلة ) is a city in north-central Tunisia where we find the best preserved Roman forum temples in Northern Africa. It was the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The archeological site is massive and we explore the forum, baths, and theater.

Kairouan | Great Mosque | Mawlid celebration | Exploring Tunisia
Took a trip to Kairouan in Tunisia to see the celebration of the Mawlid – Birthday of the Prophet (peace be on to him).
A great day with so much history, it was difficult to make a short video on the diverse experiences of the day.
After a 3-hour drive from Tunis, we arrived in Kairouan and when directly to our first stop: Aghlabid basins, large water reservoirs used in the middle ages to collect water for the area that was semi-arid.
We then walk through the street that was set up as a market area as they expect a large crowd to visit for the Mawlid. The crowd was large and it was hardtop walk but we eventually made our way to our next location: The Mausoleum of Sidi Sahab also known as the Mosque of the Barber, it houses the grave site of a companion of the Prophet (peace be onto him).
We then walked to the Medina in the old city and saw the souk, a traditional market place. It was fun walking through all the small alley ways seeing how they lived in ancient times.
We then went to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, officially named Great Mosque of Sidi-Uqba, a grand structure that is very important to the Islamic world. There was a celebration held in front the Mosque with a group singing traditional religious songs or Hadhra. The crowd was so massive but everyone was enjoying the live music, it was truly an amazing experience.
On our way back, we stopped at a bakery that specializes in Makroudh and we where lucky enough to get a demo of how its made!

The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kairouan.
Established by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi in 670 AD (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square metres and it is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb.
The Mausoleum of Sida Sahib
About 1km south-west of the Aghlabid Basins is the Zaouia of Sidi Sahab also known as the Barber's Mosque, a complex including a mausoleum and a medersa which was built between 1629 and 1692 over the tomb of one of Mohammed's companions who died in AD 685. According to legend Sidi Sahab, out of reverence for the Prophet, always carried a few hairs from his beard: hence the name of the Barber's Mosque.
The zaouia is notable for its magnificent decoration, much of which dates only from the 19th century. It is entered through a forecourt, on the left of which are the imam's lodgings, guest- rooms and ablution fountains. Opposite the entrance is the minaret. The forecourt also gives access to the medersa, laid out round a small courtyard, the prayer hall beyond it and (by way of a passage adjoining the minaret) another colonnaded courtyard, off which opens the tomb of Sidi Sahab (whose original name was Abu Djama el Balani). Kairouan is the only great Tunisian city whose history is more recent than antiquity. In 671 A.D. a camp known as a 'Kairouan' settled on what is the city's urban area of today and despite the heat and scarcity of water this location had great strategic value. The massive minaret of the Great Mosque is 35 metres high and is the most important Islamic building in Tunis. For many years it has been the structural model for subsequent generations of Maurice architects. The ancient columns and elegant decoration of the mosque's interior highlight its importance in the Islamic world. Two further buildings that are important to Islam are situated on the North Western outskirts of Kairouan: the Barbier Mosque and the Sidi Sahab Mausoleum which date back to the 17th century. They are located above the grave of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed. In addition to Mecca, Medina And Jerusalem, Kairouan is one of the four most important cities in Islam and since it was first established during the 7th century, the city's life has been continuously determined by religious faith.

Kairouan (Arabic: القيروان Al Qairawān), also known as Kirwan or al-Qayrawan, is the capital of the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia. Referred to as the Islamic Cultural Capital, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city was founded by the Arabs around 670.[1] In the period[citation needed] of Caliph Mu'awiya (reigned 661-680), it became an important centre for Islamic and Quranic learning, and thus attracting a large number of Muslims from various parts of the world, next only to Mecca and Medina. The holy Mosque of Uqba is situated in the city.[2][3] It is considered by many Muslims to be Islam's fourth holiest city.[4]
In 2003, the city had about 150,000 inhabitants.

From the outside, the Great Mosque of Kairouan is a fortress-like building, which required as much by its massive ocher walls of 1.90 meters thick composed of well-worked stones, courses of rubble stone and courses of baked bricks,[12] as the square angle towers measuring 4.25 meters on each side and the solid and projecting buttresses that support and bind. More than a defensive role, the buttresses and towers full serve more to enhance the stability of the mosque built on a soil subject to compaction.
