Great Plains Nature Center - Visit Wichita - Park Travel Review
The Great Plains Nature Center is a cooperative project between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism, City of Wichita and Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center. These partners share a common goal of providing opportunities for the public to investigate, understand and develop an appreciation for wildlife and the environment, while promoting sound stewardship of natural resources.
We enjoyed a tour of the facility from the Director, Marc Murrell and Naturalist, Amanda Alessi. The Koch Habitat Hall is the centerpiece of the Nature Center. The 3,500 square feet of displays within it were completed during the summer of 2000 and our GRAND OPENING was Labor Day Weekend, September 1 - 3, 2000. A generous grant from the Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation allowed us to finish this part of the nature center.

There are several, well marked trails in the park. By following the outer loop, we hiked about 2 miles in Chisholm Creek Park.

Taming America's Great Plains Kansas Visit
The Kansas Friendship Force hosted Friendship Force members from around the world April 27-May 1, 2015. This exchange was part of a 3 state themed exchange entitled Taming America's Heartland. This video shows the 4 days' activities that were held in Kansas.
Catching Monster Fish in Kansas
No place in the state has bigger, meaner fish than the Kansas River. The Kansas River, known as the Kaw to locals, starts at Junction City where the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers join. From there the river flows about 150 miles east to where it meets the Missouri River in Kansas City. Catfish up to 150 pounds have been pulled from the river. Thomas Finch, nicknamed the Kaw River Man, has reeled in flatheads weighing 81, 87 and 88 pounds from that stretch. In one night he and his son once caught 1,200 pounds of blue catfish, the biggest weighing 72 pounds. (Video by Michael Pearce / The Wichita Eagle)
Keeper of the Plains - Visit Wichita - Park Travel Review
One of the most iconic images in Wichita, the Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers. This 44-foot, 5-ton weathered steel sculpture was donated to Wichita by Native American artist Blackbear Bosin in 1974. It sits atop a 30-foot pedestal overlooking the city.
The Ring of Fire occurs when the firepots are lit and will burn following the schedule above for 15 minutes every evening. All schedules are weather depending, including river levels. The Ring of Fire will not be turned on in high winds, rain or other inclement weather. If the river is too high, or if a person is too close, they will not be turned on. The ceremony is sacred to the Native people of Wichita and represents the relationship of earth, water, air and fire.

Museum of the Great Plains
Located in Lawton, the Museum of the Great Plains features special collections and exhibits that spotlight the cultural and natural history of the Great Plains of North America. Some of the museum's permanent exhibits include the Domebo Dig Site, an authentic recreation of a 1960s archeological excavation that revealed human activity from 11,000 years ago.
